I had dinner at "Kita no Oni Isan" located in the bustling district of Honmachi, Hakodate. By the way, it is pronounced "Kita no Oniisan." While "Oni" (meaning "demon") isn't too bad, naming the restaurant "Isan" (meaning "heritage") is quite bold. The seating mainly consists of a counter and a small elevated area. Since it just opened, there were some menu items that couldn't be offered due to operating solo. I ordered various types of yakitori, which were served with salt only—no sauce options available. I also ordered garlic fries and an iwagori rice ball. I would have liked a few more standout items on the menu besides the name, but overall, it was surprisingly standard and satisfactory. Although it looks small from the outside, there is quite a bit of seating inside. However, since there is only one chef preparing the food, the dishes do take some time to come out. I tried the omakase and had various dishes, but the best one was the plum and shiso wrapped meat.

The beef tripe stew was delicious, with big pieces of daikon, green onions, and carrots. It was my first time trying tempura made with squid.
