The last lunch in Kitami, the gateway to Okhotsk... Although a state of emergency has been declared in Hokkaido, Kitami is a city where alcohol can be served until 7 pm. However, walking around the downtown area on the weekend, it was so empty that the term "shutter street" perfectly described the loneliness. Due to the impact of the coronavirus, there were hardly any local customers walking around, and most of the shops were closed. Feeling reluctant to go to a family restaurant and not in the mood for ramen, I was in a dilemma! But then, I spotted some guys outside starting a charcoal fire. They approached me and said, "We're open! We also have beer!" Looking at the menu posted outside, I asked for more details from the staff. As a person from Hokkaido, how about trying Kitami's representative grilled meat set with horumon, sagari, and onions? Intrigued, I followed them inside. Welcomed enthusiastically as the first customer, I was seated near the entrance with charcoal prepared for me, and I enjoyed a cold beer. The meat arrived, and it was deliciously tender. The horumon was so soft and flavorful, and the sagari was thick and juicy. And speaking of Kitami, it's known for horumon, or rather, onions. The thick slices of onions were grilled to perfection, and they were so sweet! The staff, perhaps due to being less busy, engaged in conversation and made sure I didn't feel alone. Despite it being lunchtime, everyone was enjoying beer and grilled meat, and the staff made sure I had a good time. They even offered me additional services like a highball at the end. The set came with kimchi, namul, rice, and soup, but I politely declined the rice and left feeling full and satisfied. It was a fun and delicious meal... Thank you for the great experience!
