It was a bit disappointing. However, we found a souvenir shop that I had written down in my notes. You know, one man's trash is another man's treasure. The souvenir shop had a café attached to it. There, they had skewered dumplings with soy sauce, red bean paste, and sesame. I didn't want sesame, but my wife said she wanted one skewer each, so I agreed. 'One skewer each, please.' 'Yes, we can prepare that for you,' they said, and disappeared somewhere. Where did they go to buy them? Anyway, it was an interesting café. Well, three skewers is just right, or rather, it's cutting it close. The package width is just right, so if you try to eat from the soy sauce side, you inevitably get sesame too. That's not at all pleasant for me. The dumplings themselves were delicious, and the red bean paste was also delicious. How delicious is it? It's sesame. I don't like sesame. That's the tricky part. But it wasn't powdery, and the white dumplings were delicious, and the red bean paste was also delicious. It was a dumpling that made me happy with such normalcy."

Please note that the interior, menu, and seating arrangements may have changed. In Jozankei Onsen, you can make onsen tamago (hot spring eggs) yourself! You can purchase eggs at this shop located in the corner of the souvenir shop "Jozankei Product Pavilion". There is also a space to make onsen tamago near the foot bath area, about a 5-minute walk away. When you return to this shop with the onsen tamago you made, they will provide you with plates and other items (*´˘`*)♡. It's nice to have such experiential activities that leave a lasting memory, no matter how many years pass ( ˊ꒳ˋ ) ᐝ The atmosphere in front of the irori (traditional Japanese hearth) is nice, so the dango (sweet dumplings) also look delicious~

It's Sunday, and I drove to the southern area and ended up in Jozankei. I enjoyed the foot bath, took a photo of Kappa, wandered around the souvenir shops, and took a break at "Hidamari" tea house. I sat at the counter and ordered soy sauce dango for 70 yen, sesame dango for 70 yen, and Ume tea with red pepper for 200 yen. The dango was slightly warm, not too hot, and had a chewy texture. The soy sauce had a sharp flavor, the sesame was mildly sweet with a slightly sticky texture, and the Ume tea with red pepper was quite interesting. Although I didn't feel the spiciness, my wife found it "spicy!" We ended up buying some items from the shop on our way out. It's a nice atmosphere to sit and rest when tired from walking, and it's popular among guests in yukata who come for soft serve ice cream. I'd like to come back next time for an overnight stay. The sesame dumplings had some parts of the mochi that were a bit hard, but the rich taste of sesame gently coated the mochi and made it delicious. I only had a little bit of the popular red pepper and plum tea, but the spicy kick of the chili pepper and the flavor of the plum in this tea is great. It makes you feel relaxed♪ I didn't try the onsen manju, as it's a familiar souvenir, but memories of its taste came flooding back. Sapporo's hidden gem, Jozankei Onsen. Just about an hour's drive from the city, you can reach this hot spring resort nestled in the mountains, surrounded by nature - one of Sapporo's charms! Hokkaido is also a hot spring paradise, with hot springs bubbling up all over the island, but the atmosphere of these hot spring villages with inns lined up close together is really nice. I love both the remote hot spring inns and these popular hot spring villages, each with their own unique charm. (Well, I just really love hot springs, haha). Discovering the charms of Jozankei Onsen - Part 2: In the heart of the hot spring town, the Toyohira River flows, and you can see natural hot springs bubbling out from between the rocks nearby. The steam rising up, so close you can almost reach out and touch it. Wow, hot springs! The amount of water gushing out is about 8,600 liters per minute! Amazing, right? The hot springs in this resort are believed to come from underground water seeping into the ground, warmed by the earth's heat. The water stored in the forest warms up with the earth's heat, warming both my body and soul. It's a grateful story. In the main street of the hot spring town, there are souvenir shops and tea houses scattered around. There is also a promenade along the river, making it enjoyable to stroll around, maybe even walk to the red suspension bridge called Futami Bridge. When I visit hot spring towns, I like to snack on hot spring manju (steamed buns) in between walks, so I stopped by here too. At "Ochadokoro Hidamari", you can enjoy coffee, iced coffee, chili plum tea, and skewered dumplings. - Skewered dumplings: One for 70 yen - Steamed buns: One for 75 yen The skewered dumplings were slightly larger and very soft. The chili plum dumpling had a prominent soy sauce flavor, a bit salty, while the red bean dumpling had a soft red bean filling. The steamed bun had a slightly pointed head and was shaped like a mountain, with a dark brown sugar skin and a light red bean paste inside. The Jozankei Onsen steamed buns are made smaller, perhaps so you can try different ones from various shops in the area. This is nice. Maybe it was just a one-time thing, but I saw a foreign tourist trying to order soft serve ice cream, and the server struggled to make it, resulting in a very small and misshapen cone. It was sold at the regular price, and I was surprised. I couldn't help but think about the service quality when traveling abroad and encountering such situations. It's not just here, but I've noticed service quality issues at tourist spots in Hokkaido. It made me think about Japanese service quality.

In October 2013, the Jozankei Product Hall is a long-established souvenir shop. Established in 1926, it is the oldest souvenir shop in Jozankei. On the first floor of the shop is "Ochadokoro Hidamari." Across the narrow road is the Jozankei Hotel. I stopped by when staying at the Jozankei Hotel. This shop is located in the Jozankei Onsen area in Minami-ku, Sapporo, right across from the Jozankei Hotel. For the exact location of the shop, please check on Tabelog. It had been a while since I came to the Jozankei Product Hall to buy souvenirs. "Ochadokoro Hidamari" can be entered from both inside and outside the building. I entered from inside as I was choosing souvenirs, but I think this was not possible in the past? It was still early in the morning, so there were few customers. There were also few staff in the shop. When I entered "Hidamari," a staff member came after a while. They also work at the Jozankei Product Hall. Looking at the menu, the prices were quite low. It was surprisingly inexpensive for a tourist spot like a hot spring. I ordered "soft serve ice cream" and "three-color skewered dumplings set." The staff member said, "I'm not used to making soft serve ice cream, so it may not be good, is that okay?" I replied, "It's okay even if it's not perfect." After receiving the items, I paid the bill. Soft serve ice cream: Only available in vanilla flavor, the swirl was not perfect (laughs). It was slightly smaller, rich in milk flavor, and quite smooth. Contrary to its appearance, it was a high-quality soft serve ice cream. The cone cost 250 yen. Three-color skewered dumplings set: Three colors were soy sauce, sweet bean paste, and black sesame. Each skewer had four dumplings. The dumplings were quite soft, with a smooth texture that felt like it had some katakuriko (potato starch). Each skewer cost 70 yen, and the set of three was 200 yen. The soft serve ice cream was quite rich and had a stronger flavor compared to regular dairy farm soft serve. It was not your typical touristy soft serve. The skewered dumplings set also tasted good. Having four dumplings on each skewer was a nice touch. The price was similar to a pack of dumplings at a supermarket, so it felt like a good deal. It's a place you can casually drop by when visiting Jozankei Onsen due to its affordable prices and quality. I wonder what I'll try next time. It was delicious, thank you for the meal.

Welcome! On the way up the mountain in the hot spring town of Jozankei in Minami Ward, there is a rest area with a kappa statue in front as a landmark. Oh, and there's also a nostalgic oden vending machine as a landmark, haha. When Tom entered from the rest area entrance, no one was there. There are two entrances, one for souvenirs and one for the rest area. Tom entered from the latter and found no one there. There was a sign for ice cream in the rest area, so it seems they serve ice cream. The landlady hurried over saying she was late, but Tom had plenty of time to relax. She rolled up her sleeves and said she would serve the ice cream soon. The soft serve ice cream with an elegant swirl pattern was a rich vanilla flavor that made Tom feel a tingle in his body. It seemed like a soft serve ice cream that had been made since the Showa era. There was a hearth in front of him, and eating in this traditional Japanese setting was pure bliss. Although it may be inconvenient to live here, it is the perfect place to visit in this hot spring town with its long history. Thank you for the meal!
