Atsuta, Ishikari City. It's about a little over an hour drive north on R231 from Sapporo, with the Sea of Japan on your left. I love the road from Mora to Atsuta. When the weather is nice, you can enjoy the sparkling sea while driving, and the scenery is amazing. It's a casual drive route from Sapporo. "Ishida Fisheries Direct Sales Store" is located near Atsuta Fishing Port. It seems they process and sell salmon caught in the sea of Atsuta, and there is a small "direct sales store" right next to the processing plant. The small shop looks like a hut, but there is a big sign at the entrance and the door was open. It has a welcoming atmosphere. Inside, there were two women, and a small space displaying dried fish, "Atsuta kombu", and a refrigerator and freezer. They also sold homemade rice sushi here. The sushi comes in four varieties: salmon, flounder, halibut, and herring, each for 1000 yen. The fish are caught in this fishing port, and they freeze salmon in September when there is salmon fishing. I found something interesting called "nuka salmon". I often eat nuka herring, but nuka salmon was new to me! They also had octopus from Atsuta here. The octopus from this area towards Rumoi in the north is delicious, right? There was a lot of herring processing products here too. They were selling "Herring Cut" for 500 yen. This is also handmade at the processing plant using Atsuta herring. I bought it frozen and brought it home in a styrofoam case. This is my first time trying herring cut, it's like pickled fish with grains of rice bran inside. It has a salty taste like pickled fish. I'm sure this goes well with sake! While many fish roe products like shad roe are often from Canada, it's great to be able to buy locally caught fish like this at "Hama no Chokubaijo". The products they handle may vary depending on the season, and there may be some good deals at that time, so I'd like to visit again when I go to Atsuta. The "morning market" near the port will also start from mid-April, so I'm looking forward to that too. Atsuta's town guide includes a map of shops in the Atsuta area with the store owner's caricature. It's quite interesting! Ishida Fisheries Direct Sales Store...http://www.ishikari-kita.com/shop/
