This is a newly opened restaurant near a friend's house called "Obanzai." I visited without a reservation around 7:10 pm on a holiday. The restaurant is located in the center of Takikawa city, just off the main road (Government Office Street) a little to the east. It's very close to Takikawa City Hall and Takikawa Municipal Hospital. The exterior of the restaurant is sleek with black walls and a clean appearance. There is no sign outside, so it may be a bit hard to find (signs are said to be installed in the future). The restaurant is on the first floor of a two-story building. A white curtain hangs at the entrance. Inside, you are required to take off your shoes at the entrance before entering. The atmosphere is elegant with a Japanese style. There are 6 counter seats and a table for 4 people (which seems to be a private room). The restaurant is run by the husband and wife owners, who are both friendly and pleasant. When I visited, there were two middle-aged men dining together, who seemed to be locals. The menu includes 12 types of "obanzai" (home-cooked dishes commonly made in Kyoto), 8 simple sake appetizers, onigiri (rice balls), ice cream, and more. The focus is on light dishes, but the lineup is quite appealing. The drink selection seemed to have some unique choices. Prices are reasonable to moderate. My companion and I ordered "Wasabi Flavored Tamagoyaki 550 yen," "Nikuinar 640 yen," "Smoked Cheese and Nut Potato Salad 420 yen," "Tochio Aburaage Yaki 580 yen," "Sweet and Sour Fried Chicken Wings 640 yen," and "Burdock Gomaa Tappuri Wae 450 yen" (tax included). For drinks, I had draft beer, Midori Jin Soda, and chilled sake. As a complimentary dish, we were served "Shungiku Tofu, Salted Boiled Egg, and Cucumber Spicy Salad 660 yen." Both the food and drinks were served promptly. The dishes were each a portion for 1-2 people. The presentation was simple and clean. The flavors were refined, with the ingredients shining through. There was a mix of homestyle and chef-inspired dishes. Everything was delicious, but the Shungiku Tofu (complimentary dish) with its surprising combination of flavors, the Wasabi Flavored Tamagoyaki with its fluffy texture, the Nikuinar with its juicy filling, and the Sweet and Sour Fried Chicken Wings with its flavorful glaze and tender meat were particularly memorable. The two types of chilled sake (Yokoyama Junmai Ginjo Sake Silver Super Dry 7 Fire and Tamagawa Junmai Sake Unfiltered Fresh Sake) were also unique and enjoyable. If you order sake, you can choose from about 30 different sake cups to drink from. Overall, it was a great find. My friend who lives nearby must be jealous.
