I went to Kitayuzawa for work, but there were hardly any restaurants around. I saw a sign while driving, so I decided to have lunch there anyway. When I entered, I realized it was affiliated with Kinoko Oukoku (Mushroom Kingdom). I had eaten at Ootaki's Kinoko Oukoku before on a work trip and remembered that it wasn't particularly delicious, but it was cheap and had a generous portion. The menu consisted of noodles, rice bowls, curry, etc., with mushrooms being the main ingredient as expected. However, the prices were significantly higher than Kinoko Oukoku. I ordered the mushroom tempura soba (850 yen). My colleague ordered the tanuki soba. The soba was average, and the dipping sauce was mediocre, but the tempura was just not good. The batter was hard and resembled a fritter, and it had a strong oily smell. There was plenty of tempura, but the batter was dark brown. It seemed to be stained by old frying oil rather than being over-fried. When I looked at my colleague's tanuki soba, the tempura bits were also unusually dark brown. We ate silently and left the restaurant quickly. I probably won't visit again.
