During my first visit to Otaru Station in March 2020, I purchased some processed herring products at a shop called "Tarushe" that sells products from the Shakotan region. I love herring, so whenever I see herring products, I can't help but buy them. The coastal areas of Hokkaido, including Otaru, Yoichi, and Shakotan, have a rich history of herring fishing. Due to overfishing, herring is no longer caught in Hokkaido, but processing companies continue to import herring and develop their processing techniques. While Rumoi is famous for its kazunoko (herring roe) processing, Yoichi and Iwanai have many companies that process herring itself. I bought a pack of "Yoichi-style Herring Jerky" for 486 yen. It contains 5 soft pieces of deboned herring. The soft texture and aroma make it easy to eat, and it pairs well not only with sake but also with whiskey. Enjoy this jerky with a smoky whiskey from the birthplace of Nikka Whiskey, the Yoichi Distillery.
