A little away from home and with frequent temporary closures, I make a phone reservation before heading to Sapporo's hidden gem, Jozankei. From Sapporo, take R230 south and turn left at "Misawa". Then drive 3.7km on a mountain road... It's not a joke, it's a difficult road where cars have trouble passing and it seems like bears could appear... If you drive slowly, it should be fine, so if you're interested, drive safely and give it a try. Depending on the day, they offer pick-up services, so if you're using public transportation, consult the restaurant. After turning left on the national highway, you'll reach the restaurant in about 10 minutes. Surprisingly, the parking lot is full... But thanks to the reservation, we easily got a seat. The restaurant appears to be a standalone building, but there are actually a few houses around... However, the road leading to the restaurant seems to be a dead end according to the map. Inside the clean, wooden-floored restaurant, we order the "Wild Vegetable Set Meal of the Day @1,500 + tax"... You can choose one main dish from options like "Salted Mackerel," "Simmered Pork Hamburg," "Gyoza," "Potato Gratin," "Oil-Blanched Chicken," and "Fried Dashi Tofu." I chose "Grilled Fish" and "Simmered Hamburg." The meal arrived in about 15 minutes, including the main dishes, rice, miso soup, side dishes, and salad. The rice was slightly colored and cooked with beans, the miso soup had plenty of ingredients and was well-seasoned, the side dishes were all tasty and well-prepared. The grilled fish was well-seasoned and not fishy, while the simmered pork hamburger was juicy and flavorful. The dishes were excellent, but the overall experience here is beyond what words can describe. Even though it seems challenging to go when it snows, they apparently operate as usual in winter. I highly recommend visiting this place if you're interested. I'm sure the friendly staff will warmly welcome you. Thank you for the meal.
