I don't know about the authentic Nagasaki champon udon, but sometimes I crave its taste. On this day, a few days ago, I saw Ichikura on a variety show, and my companion's appetite seemed to be set on champon. This time, I wanted to eat heartily, so I also ordered a mini rice bowl. I think the mini tonkatsu bowl was made with pork fillet cutlet. I will visit again.

The firmness of the noodles, the perfect boiling of the vegetables in the tempura, the doneness of the fire, the crispiness of the chicken tempura batter, the taste of the sesame sauce, everything was carefully crafted. There must be a skilled chef in the kitchen, haha. The polite and natural service from the staff was also wonderful.

The cold days with temperatures below -10 degrees continued, and everyone wanted to eat something warm. When I visited the restaurant at night, it was full and I had to wait a bit before being seated. I ordered a set meal with Nagasaki champon udon and negitoro bowl. The hand-stretched udon noodles were wide like bell-bottom pants, which was unique. They went well with the champon soup and were delicious. It really warmed me up.

The other day, I visited a very spacious restaurant, but surprisingly there was only a short wait at Yamaoka-ya. I used to have a bit of a dislike for udon due to the taste of my childhood, but recently I've come to enjoy it more, maybe due to aging. The restaurant always has a clean and pleasant atmosphere. This time, I made the mistake of ordering a menu item that wasn't recommended, but when I asked for recommendations, I was told that the tsukemen, champon, and meat udon are better options as they have more flavor than the regular broth. I was advised against ordering the katsu. For today's order during lunchtime, I had the "Tempura Don with Udon Set" (800 yen) with an extra serving of udon. The broth was light but had a strong kombu flavor. Personally, I prefer a weaker kombu flavor and a stronger bonito flavor. The noodles are unusual for Hokkaido, being boiled for around 30 minutes, very chewy and soft with a slight firmness and a unique shape with thick ends. The wheat flavor is strong and distinctive, which may not be noticed by everyone. The tempura was crispy and the sauce was light and not greasy. Overall, this restaurant may not be suitable for those who prefer firm noodles or strong flavors, but it is recommended for those who like soft and light dishes. It was delicious. Thank you for the meal!

A long time ago, it used to be a traditional noodle shop called "Aji no Minzoku" where you could get a fragrant dipping noodle set for 950 yen. The mini tempura rice bowl set has remained the same since the days of "Aji no Minzoku". The udon noodles are flat at the ends, long, and have a smooth and chewy texture. The dipping sauce is flavorful with a layer of oil on top, and it is piping hot and delicious with pork slices in it. The udon noodles and dipping sauce complement each other perfectly. The mini tempura rice bowl has a crispy coating and just the right amount of food. It was my first time in a while visiting this udon shop, and I still think Muginosato is the most delicious udon place. It was very crowded, showing how popular it is. I left feeling completely satisfied. Thank you for the meal.

After work, I asked for refueling, oil change, and car wash at the gas station, and in the meantime, let's have lunch. I revisited this place because the udon with Kyoto-style dashi broth that I had before was surprisingly delicious. I had the Katsuobushi dashi-based Japanese curry udon and a mini grated yam rice bowl this time. I really like the strong Japanese dashi flavor in the curry udon. The curry udon tasted like the one you'd get at a soba noodle shop, and it was delicious! The mini grated yam rice bowl (still undecided on a nickname) was good, but I wish the grated yam was freshly grated rather than pre-made. I had just started eating when I received a call from the gas station saying, "It's ready!" It was quick, which was nice, but I had to eat quickly too. Even though it's an udon shop, they have a variety of dishes which is fun. I wonder what kind of udon I should try next time? Thank you for the meal.

"First Visit in June 2021" The fourth stop of the second half of the "Curry Udon Taste Test" carried over from the end of April is the udon family restaurant "Muginosato". For people of my generation, it might be better to say "Taste Folk Art", but it is currently operated under the name "Hand-Stretched Udon Muginosato" due to a change in management. It is a different type of udon restaurant from self-service udon chains such as Marugame Seimen, Hanamaru Udon, and Iyo Seimen, with udon as the main focus but also offering dishes like tempura rice bowls and pork cutlet rice bowls, as well as elements of a dessert shop. I ordered the "Japanese-style Curry Udon" as a mini bowl set, with a side of "Mini Pork Cutlet Rice Bowl". The "Curry Udon" alone costs 825 yen including tax, which is the highest price among the places reviewed this time, similar to the price range of places like Coco Ichibanya. As I have mentioned in previous reviews, I like the type of pork cutlet rice bowl that is not topped with a beaten egg (of course, I also like the type with the egg), and since there are not many places that offer it, I tend to order it when it is on the menu. In conclusion, both the curry udon and the pork cutlet rice bowl were extremely disappointing. First, the main udon dish lacked depth in the curry broth. The broth was thick but lacked richness. It had a decent level of spiciness, but it was still unsatisfying. It felt like drinking miso soup with a weak dashi base, leaving me unsatisfied. The ingredients included thinly sliced pork, aburaage (deep-fried tofu), and green onions, which were decent, but given the higher price range compared to places like Marugame Seimen, it was somewhat expected. The udon noodles themselves were different from Sanuki udon, but the lack of satisfaction from the curry broth overshadowed everything. The pork cutlet rice bowl, which was supposed to be the saving grace, felt cheap even though it was a mini bowl. If they were to increase the price, they should at least increase the volume of the pork cutlet; otherwise, it leaves a negative impression. The restaurant is bright and spacious, with a nice atmosphere. The parking lot is a bit difficult to access from the north due to the intersection, but the interior is spacious and convenient. They take thorough infection prevention measures, including temperature checks and alcohol disinfection before entering. If I were to revisit, I would probably stick to more traditional udon dishes. ============================== ◇ Japanese-style Curry Udon Mini Bowl Set 1,155 yen (Japanese-style Curry Udon / Mini Pork Cutlet Rice Bowl)

Today is a work day. I visited during the GS tire change. Judging from the name of this shop, it seems to be a chain store. The background music is not New Year's, but something like "Spring Sea" is playing, which is calming. I had the Tempura Udon Mini Don Set with a Mini Negitoro Don for ¥759. I also added a hot corn soup. The Tempura Udon was delicious, with a light Kyoto-style broth and hand-made noodles that were smooth with a good texture. The tempura shrimp was firm and the batter was just right. The Mini Negitoro Don was also tasty, with what I assume was a soy sauce and dashi broth. The hot corn soup was simply delicious. It was a satisfying amount for lunch and overall, it was tasty. Thank you for the meal.

On a certain weekday, I went to a slightly upscale chain udon restaurant located at Higashi-ku Kita 31-jō Higashi 19-chōme for lunch. The parking lot has enough spaces for parking. The interior of the restaurant has spacious family-sized box tables where you can comfortably seat about 4 people, but due to the current situation, they have removed some tables, reducing the available seating. The background music playing is the sound of a koto. From the menu, I chose the "aromatic noodle set (913 yen)" which seemed like a limited edition, and opted for a "mini negitoro bowl". The chopstick case was surprising, resembling something from Don Quijote, but after some research, it seems to have no relation and is from a company called Sagami Chain in Tokyo. So, I took a bite... The udon noodles had a relatively wide and chewy texture, with a good throat feel. The dipping sauce was thick and hot, maintaining its heat even when cold noodles were dipped in, with a generous layer of oil-like film floating on top, rivaling the dipping ramen style of a soy sauce-based ramen. The dipping sauce included leeks, green onions, and tasty pork, and I enjoyed adding the sesame seeds provided halfway through. Next, the negitoro bowl was a small portion of negitoro with soy sauce drizzled on top, mixed well, and served with pickled radish with shiso leaves. It was decent, with no standout features, but not bad either. I was pleased to see more customers coming in as I arrived right when the restaurant opened. The staff's quick response to a customer's request to remove onions, followed by the kind gesture of asking "What should we do about the onions?" immediately after, was lovely. Thank you for the meal.

I ended up here as a solo lunch refugee well past lunchtime. It's almost 3 PM, the place is not crowded, there's parking, and they serve hand-pulled udon. My husband and coworkers don't really like Muginosato, but I do. I enjoy the texture of their hand-pulled udon, and the seating is spacious, allowing me to relax. I've liked them since the Mingei-san days. This time, I had the cold dipping udon. Lately, I've been into noodles with meat toppings. Since it was well past lunchtime, they served quickly, which was appreciated. The dipping sauce was hot, causing the udon to heat up quickly. It was thick and coated the udon nicely, making it delicious. The pork fat added a nice touch. It was too strong to drink straight, but I wished I could dilute it. I'll definitely come back when I miss lunchtime again. Thank you for the meal.

I felt like eating udon, so I stopped by for a solo lunch. It was around 1 pm, a bit off the usual lunch hour. There weren't many cars parked on the Shinmichi side, so I parked and went inside the restaurant, which was quite busy. I sat at a table on the west side and noticed that there were a lot of cars parked on the west side. It was a cold day, so I ordered the Chige Chanpon with an iced coffee. The Chige Chanpon looked light and not too thick, despite being a chanpon dish. It wasn't cloudy like I expected. When I tried the soup, it had a fragrant and slightly spicy taste that was easy to drink and delicious! The kishimen-style udon was also to my liking. I drank quite a bit of the soup and was full. Thank you for the meal!

It's been a while since I visited "Mugino Sato Sapporo Shindo Higashi Store" after its renovation. The place looks very clean now, with no trace of the old "Aji no Minwaza" at all. I ordered the Spicy Chanpon Udon for 800 yen (excluding tax). I felt like eating something spicy today. This time, I didn't get the mini rice bowl. The dish arrived in less than 10 minutes. The soup was quite spicy and had a light flavor. The udon noodles, as expected from "Mugino Sato," were firm and smooth, which I like. The vegetables in the soup could have been a bit softer, as they had a bit of a crunch. Overall, it was a delicious meal! I think I would have preferred the set with the mini rice bowl next time, as I felt a bit unsatisfied.

I visited Mugino Sato Sapporo Shindo Higashi store alone for dinner. The parking lot is big and it's easy to enter as it is located along Shindo. However, this place seems to be more family-oriented. I ordered the "Nagasaki Chanpon Udon with Mini Donburi (Mini Negitoro Don)" for 1,320 yen because I wanted to eat vegetables. It was my first time trying Chanpon Udon, but it was delicious. The Negitoro Donburi was also good.

It's located in a very convenient place, but it was my first visit. I'm not really a fan of eating udon out, but I decided to go this time since I was invited. I ordered the "Mugino Sato Set" which includes a choice of small udon, a choice of mini rice bowl, a choice of dessert, and a salad. I chose the cold tempura udon with grated daikon, a mini teriyaki pork bowl, and a mini matcha white dumpling for dessert. The udon was chewy and slippery, although I personally prefer udon with more firmness, it was still delicious. The teriyaki pork was soft and tasty, but I think it would be better with 1 or 2 more slices of pork to balance with the rice. The matcha white dumpling was mostly matcha agar jelly, and unfortunately, it didn't suit my taste. The dessert kind of brought down my excitement, but the portion size was good and it was cost-effective. The menu changes according to the season, so I might revisit. Next time, I'll go for the mini red bean soup for dessert...!! (laughs)

The location is along Shinmichi street. It's easy to find as it's at a corner of a intersection, making it easy to enter the parking lot. The parking lot is spacious, with room for about 15-20 cars. It used to share a space with Mister Donut when it was called "Ajino Minzoku," but now it has become "Muginosato." The atmosphere has changed with a new management, and the interior feels fresh and new. The day I visited was on a weekday around 6 pm, with only a few cars in the parking lot. The interior is bright, with high ceilings and spacious seating for families. I ordered the Kashiwa Tempura Donburi (with a side of small udon), and the Shio-Koji Udon with a mini rice bowl set. The small udon with the tempura donburi had a slightly rich broth with green onions and mitsuba. The noodles were just the right thickness. The tempura donburi had tender chicken and a good balance of eggplant, pumpkin, and shishito peppers. The shio-koji udon had a milky broth with a strong yuzu pepper flavor, and the toppings included chicken, green onions, and wood ear mushrooms. Overall, it was a good experience, although a bit salty. The prices were reasonable, especially the 100 yen drinks during weekday lunch hours. It could be a good option for a lunch gathering with a larger group.
