Having been in Japan for almost six years, I occasionally crave Korean cuisine, and the first place that comes to mind is COCOYA in Ikebukuro. They recently opened a second location, and here’s what I had:
1. **Samgyeopsal**: The pork belly was thick, and they grilled it for us. The combination of the meat with the side dishes (namul and kimchi) was great.
2. **Chicken Skewers**: I was surprised by how affordable they were, so I didn't expect much. However, the batter and chicken were perfectly balanced, and the sauce was delicious. I initially ordered five skewers and then got five more, with the soy sauce flavor being my recommendation.
3. **Yakitori**: I found it incredibly tasty, and I ended up ordering even more, including the Yangnyeom chicken, which was also delicious.
**Atmosphere**: Since it had just opened, it was very clean, and the decor was stylish and appealing. The staff were, of course, very friendly. Personally, I appreciated that unlike many Korean restaurants in Shin-Okubo that blast K-pop music, the volume here was just right for conversation.
**Overall Experience**: When I visit other Korean restaurants in places like Shin-Okubo, it usually feels more like, “Wow, that was good,” or “It’s been a while since I had Korean food, this tastes about right,” leaving me somewhat satisfied but not blown away. So when I return to Korea, I often think to myself, "Ah, this is what Korean food is supposed to taste like," and I end up eating a lot while there, returning to Japan quite a bit heavier—it's a bad cycle (that's my excuse). But here at COCOYA, I genuinely felt like I had a delicious meal. While I've frequented the first location, I think I’ll start visiting this second location from time to time as well.
