In Obihiro, I suddenly discovered a Sri Lankan restaurant. It looks like an out-of-town store like "Spice Garden," but it's within a 10-minute walk from Obihiro Station. In car-oriented Obihiro, parking lots are spacious everywhere. Next to the entrance is a sign that says "Lion House." Wait, which one is the name of the restaurant? The interior of the restaurant has a quite old-fashioned feel. In the back, there is a Sri Lankan elderly man sitting. There are no other customers, and when I entered, our eyes met, and there was a moment of silence. After 5 seconds, he said, "Welcome." This restaurant was established in 1987. The chef, Mr. Perera Lionel (if I remember correctly), seems to be over 70 years old. I was surprised to find such an old Sri Lankan restaurant in Hokkaido. The audio system is excellent, and it even feels like being at home. The curry menu is quite extensive, and there are also devil dishes. This time, I ordered the most popular dish here. ★ Spicy Ginger Pork Curry ¥1260 ★ Roti ¥210 It's rare to find a meal for just one coin in Obihiro, where "Indian" restaurants are thriving. But when the dish arrived, it was worth it. A large bowl filled with plenty of volume! Can I finish it? The spiciness is the 5th out of 7 levels, which is strong, and I also ordered the fluffy roti. The ginger-based curry is completely soup-like. It has cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, potatoes, and plenty of pork. Ah, so this is truly soup curry. Well, this Sri Lankan curry is not an imitation of Hokkaido soup curry. The roots of Hokkaido soup curry are in India, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka, and this Sri Lankan curry style could be the prototype of Hokkaido soup curry. This style of curry, where you warm up from the inside by drinking a bowlful, is the best match for the cold Hokkaido weather. The chef, a veteran who serves the food and talks slowly, has the aura of a spice guru in the north.
