Tokyo has many famous drinking streets like Ameyoko's under the bridge, Hoppy Street in Asakusa, Golden Gai in Shinjuku, the triangular area in Sangenjaya, Nonbe Yokocho in Kitatashi, and OK Yokocho in Akabane, all of which are a lot of fun to explore. However, I recently visited the drinking area right in front of Nishi-Ogikubo Station for the first time, and it was quite enjoyable. Even though we're in the midst of a significant post-COVID exodus during the Golden Week, this time of year is one of the most pleasant seasons in Tokyo, allowing me to rejuvenate without going anywhere far. Though I do enjoy food walking within the city! Tonight, I managed to make a reservation at a yakitori place I was curious about, so I walked from Ogikubo to Nishi-Ogikubo. I thought it would take just 2-3 minutes since it's only one station apart, but it turned out to be about a 30-minute walk—who knew? Ogikubo is a residential area, but Nishi-Ogikubo has a more down-to-earth feel with many casual dining options lined up. It seems like an area worth exploring. While it's quite far from the city center, unlike Ueno or Ikebukuro, it doesn’t feel chaotic due to the low number of inbound tourists. It has a nostalgic drinking street atmosphere, making it very comfortable to spend time in.
Since I walked to Nishi-Ogikubo and still had some time before my reservation, I took a stroll around the drinking area and settled at a takoyaki shop. Other places were pretty busy, but this one had no customers, which felt just right. My wife ordered a draft beer while I went for my usual Kaku highball, and we had some takoyaki made for us. I accidentally rushed the order, so we ended up with some soft, soggy takoyaki. They were creamy, but not fully cooked, quickly sinking in the middle! I had to eat them fast, so our pre-drinks session wrapped up in just about 15 minutes, but since we came for yakitori, it was no problem. This area seems really interesting, so I definitely want to come back to search for more drinking spots. Thank you for the meal!
