Here’s a review of Taiwanese Mixed Rice at Shuhin, as well as other gourmet dishes and daily life experiences. Please save this for later; I’d appreciate it! ♥️ I originally said I wasn’t good with spicy food, but it’s not that I can’t handle it; I just sweat a lot, which makes me hesitant. I don’t prefer very spicy foods but I’ve started to love Mapo Tofu since last year, and I enjoyed a delicious serving recently!
Here’s what I had:
- Taiwanese Mixed Rice (950)
- Taiwanese Ramen
- Mapo Tofu (750)
- Gyo Bao (3 pieces, water style) (500)
- Three types of Spring Rolls (700): Net Spring Roll, Veggie Shrimp, Seafood with Cilantro
- Chili Shrimp (1,500)
- Taiwan Mango Beer
- Passoa (mixed with orange soda) (650)
Let’s break it down:
- **Taiwan Mango Beer**: It has no bitterness, just a sweet mango fragrance. Even if you’re not a beer fan, this beer cocktail is enjoyable.
- **Passoa**: A cocktail made with passion fruit and orange.
- **Chili Shrimp**: This dish features large shrimp and has a mild spiciness, making it a must-try.
- **Spring Rolls**: Unlike regular spring roll wrappers, these are encased in a crispy net-like coating, which I highly recommend!
- **Gyo Bao**: A delightful mix of gyoza and soup dumplings. I chose the water style, but be careful when you bite into it—there’s a burst of soup inside!
- **Taiwanese Mixed Rice**: It’s like the rice version of Taiwanese mixed noodles. For those times when you want to dig in, this is definitely a recommendation!
- **Taiwanese Ramen**: The sweet egg noodles pair perfectly with the broth. When I asked if I could come just to eat this next time, they said yes! They mentioned that it used to be a late-night menu item but now they want to offer it more often, including a soy milk Tan Tan noodle option—definitely something to look forward to!
- **Mapo Tofu**: I’m getting into Mapo Tofu this year! I still don’t know much about it, but I can tell there are some spices I haven’t tried before, making it quite complex. The amazing flavor leaves me wanting more, even while I’m sweating profusely. I finished it without hesitation despite my mouth and lips tingling from the spice—it's so strangely delicious!
Thank you, Shuhin, for an unforgettable meal! If you want to see more delicious dishes and daily posts, check out @waju_gourmet_kyoto!

I can't believe such a trendy restaurant was hidden away like this! It's a new place that opened this year, and the interior is super stylish. The Taiwanese dishes were all authentic and delicious. Personally, I thought the Ebi Mayo was plump and amazing!

This year, a hidden gem of a Chinese restaurant opened up! The interior has a stylish Chinese vibe✨✨ Everything I tried was delicious, but the Taiwanese mixed rice and Taiwanese ramen were especially spicy and so good. Personally, I highly recommend the fried chicken! It's juicy and super satisfying! It would pair perfectly with beer. It’s just a short walk from Kawaramachi Station, but it’s a true hidden spot that I recommend! They’re open until 4 AM! Definitely check it out!

Recently, after climbing Mt. Atago to visit the Atago Shrine, I went to try a new menu item, Taiwanese ramen, for dinner (*≧▽≦)b. Accompanying the ramen was some crispy fried chicken (*≧▽≦)b. The Taiwanese ramen tasted similar to the ones from my hometown, evoking a sense of nostalgia while being delicious. The spicy kick is addictive, making it perfect to enjoy just the ramen, along with beer or alcohol, as a great way to finish the meal (*≧▽≦)b.
As for the fried chicken, it has been revamped since my last visit, now featuring a soy sauce-based flavor that is rich and pairs exceptionally well with beer and alcohol (*≧▽≦)b. It’s the perfect match! Of course, I didn’t forget to order the restaurant's signature dish, Taiwanese mixed rice (*≧▽≦)b.
My personal favorite is the grilled gyo-pao (gyoza bun) ✌️. If you’re in Kyoto’s Kiyamachi area and unsure where to have dinner or drinks, I highly recommend visiting Sake Hiran, known for its Taiwanese mixed rice (*≧▽≦)b. Alongside the mixed rice, you can enjoy delicious dishes and drinks while being warmly welcomed by the friendly owner and a guitarist-looking team member, who greet you with smiles ☺️✨✌️.

Taiwanese mixed rice (a specialty) is incredibly delicious with its spicy kick and the perfect match of ground meat and soft-boiled egg. You can choose the level of spiciness and numbing sensation, with anything above a 3 for an extra charge, which is a great feature. You can also select from small, medium, or large portions based on the day's offerings. The picture shows a small portion.
Gyo pao (round dumplings) are easy to understand as they are like dumplings. There are fried and steamed options, but I personally recommend the fried ones. They come in packs of 3 or 5, and the 3-piece option is just right as a snack to accompany drinks. The picture shows the 3-piece fried dumplings.
The fried chicken has a crunchy exterior and a soft inside, with a well-seasoned base that makes it delicious on its own; the picture shows a half portion.
Other menu items include shrimp mayo, shrimp chili, braised pork, and fried potatoes with chorizo. For drinks, there’s Taiwanese beer, fruit wines, and non-alcoholic options like mango juice and oolong tea. Whether you want to have one drink, several, or just enjoy the food without drinking, it’s all good.
This Taiwanese restaurant is perfect for everyone from kids to adults, and you can enjoy it alone or with a group of 4 or 5. If you’re nearby or even far away, I highly recommend trying it at least once!

I love Taiwanese cuisine and found this restaurant, which I visited for the third time because it’s incredibly delicious. The shrimp chili is far better than at other places, and the shrimp is impressively large, so I end up ordering it every time. The fried chicken is also big, and not only is the taste fantastic, but it's also very filling for the price, giving a great sense of value. I definitely recommend this place to anyone who loves Taiwanese food!
