Recently, there's been a lot of buzz about a new restaurant in the vicinity of Shinsei Town, along the Seibu Ikebukuro Line. Although it's a bit far for some, it's only about a 15-minute walk from Yochō, making it accessible for residents of Itabashi. It seems that with the opening of the 7G line, the rest of the world has faded away, so to speak.
I am Egarin, Baron of the Sea Land Principality, FSM Bishop, and Chairman of the Itabashi Youth Association. The thought of being alone at night… is it frightening? Alone in Shinsei Town? Alone with yakitori? That's why I want to enjoy homemade pâté with you.
Recently, I heard about this place from Tamaya's Tama-san. There’s a new guy who grills, and someone who used to handle sides at a certain central place is now on the team. They just opened yesterday, so I had to check it out.
Upon visiting, I didn't know if I would be recognized, but I was called out, "Are you a regular from Tōbu Nerima?" Despite having only met once, what an impressive memory! On this occasion, I remembered as well, as the person was someone familiar from an old advertisement featuring R-Taro, but not him.
I had spoken with R-Taro earlier about how both of them are now alone, so it seemed fitting to bring it up again. I immediately ordered the nostalgic pâté, paired with a standard lemon bottle, probably around three pumps. Following that, I opted for a refreshing sour drink.
As for the stew, I ordered the mixed ingredients, which included offal stew, daikon radish, tofu, and ganmo. While I wondered if ganmo and daikon were more like oden, I decided that they would all share the same flavor. To my surprise, the ganmo soaked up the flavor beautifully, making it delicious!
Next, I ordered pickled cucumber, which had an interesting presentation. I remembered the camembert being the type without tomatoes, and the French salad was larger than I expected, featuring a nice pop of paprika.
Interestingly, the ordering system is primarily mobile, offering options for "spicy miso" and an "April limited special spicy miso,” with a difference of free versus paid. Being a noble, I ordered the paid version. I imagined it would be like a cabage-dressed miso, but it turned out to be spicier and thicker, which would definitely suit skewers well.
Next, I ventured into the grilled items with liver that was perfectly cooked, followed by harami and unexpected-looking tsukune, which resembled something a parent might bring from a kitchen truck—though it was fresh and grilled, not pre-cooked. It’s likely that their process is complex and unique.
I sampled a variety of skewered meats including the flavorful aburamatsu, finding everything delicious. I've always enjoyed yakitori from smaller, familiar places, and now it was time to try some avocado, perfectly cooked as well.
For drinks, I went with an Iroha Lemon Sour, which had a tropical fruit fragrance that was lovely. The savory rolled egg was aromatic and delicious, followed by a platter of mixed fried items, including anchovy potatoes, fried chicken, and a ham cutlet that could only be had through this combination.
The ham cutlet came with a special sauce served on the side, and the anchovy potatoes were skewed towards a heavier mayo flavor, which suited me well since I’m not a big fan of anchovies. The fried chicken was satisfying too, with a comforting, crispy texture.
As for drinks, my companion chose a Gold Highball made from rum. I concluded my sampling with a Sapporo Sorachi 1984 draft, which felt robust and had a distinct aroma.
The interior had a casual vibe with a smoking room available. It's interesting to see more establishments these days providing designated smoking areas, probably to improve the overall customer experience.
The restaurant opened on April 23, 2024, operating on limited hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 5 PM to 11 PM; Saturday from 3 PM to 11 PM; Sunday from 3 PM to 10 PM; closed on Mondays and Thursdays. Reservations aren't available yet, but they accept credit cards, except for AMEX, and unfortunately, PayPay isn't supported.
Despite a few shortcomings, the quality of food and the clean, spacious environment shows they’ve put a lot of thought into the décor. The layout suggests they are targeting a younger crowd while also welcoming families. Overall, I found it to be a wonderful experience. The kitchen was sizable, allowing for creativity in the dishes served.
One of the biggest perks? The smoke-free interior! A relief compared to other places. It's still unclear how they manage the ventilation, but it certainly enhances the dining experience.
