Tram get off at "Matsukaze-cho" stop, 2 minutes walk. Following the famous takoyaki shop in Hakodate, there is also a long-established yakisoba shop. This yakisoba specialty store opened in 1953 and is very well-established. The default flavor is said to be light, but you can customize the taste at each table with sauce and pepper to your liking. This time, I ordered the meat yakisoba for 610 yen, but upon closer inspection, there are various types available such as egg and squid. The atmosphere inside the store is nostalgic and cozy. The default color is indeed brown, with a light seasoning that has a strong aroma of pepper and a hint of pickled ginger. When you try it, the yakisoba is quite oily with a salt and pepper flavor. Although it is lightly seasoned, the taste becomes more satisfying when you eat the meat, making it unexpectedly addictive. The aftertaste has a presence of sesame oil. The sauce has a strong acidity, but it doesn't drastically change the flavor. Surprisingly, the plain yakisoba without sauce might be good too. It doesn't feel like eating at the restaurant, but oh well. Oh, I forgot to use seaweed. A taste that has been loved for about 70 years. Thank you for the meal.

I visited a yakisoba specialty shop on the first floor of the off-track betting venue for the first time. I ordered the regular size with meat and egg. It cost 670 yen including tax. I didn't have much prior information, but when I tried it, the taste was a bit bland and the slight burnt taste stood out due to the lack of flavor.

Maru Kin Yakisoba, a hidden gem known to those in the know! This place tends to divide opinions - you either love it or hate it. My husband has been a big fan for years. When I first tried it, I was like, huh? But after eating it several times, I grew to like it (laughs). The flavor is a bit light, so we sprinkle nori and sauce on top. Ah, this taste! It makes me crave for soup! So, I ordered an extra serving of hot soup along with the yakisoba. We should have just ordered regular portions, but we got too excited and ended up with large servings... and couldn't finish it all. Such a waste. I know I'll regret leaving that yakisoba behind when I return to Sapporo. The shop also offers takeout, so I asked if we could get a pack to go, and they happily agreed. Will definitely enjoy it as a late-night snack. Satisfied!

The nostalgic yakisoba from the past! The noodles are short, and the sauce is light, but you can season it to your liking! Highly recommended with squid as it is in Hakodate♡ Takeout is also available! Details here ☟ Hakodate's B-grade gourmet "Marukin" yakisoba has an addictive nostalgic taste!

Marukin @ Hakodate Hakodate's Soul Food at Tsugaru Strait On March 30, 2019 (Saturday) at 06:30 AM Theme: Travel We, the Tokyo Hormones, were wondering if we could have a double sauce, but it didn't seem possible. Marukin @ Hakodate - Hakodate's Soul Food at Tsugaru Strait - The Story Three bowls in just over three hours. Isn't it time to stop eating? Let's go for a walk. So, we ended up in Hakodate, which is pronounced as "Hakodate" and not as "Hot Dog" as we initially thought. It's actually a shipyard. Just a short walk and suddenly the northern atmosphere became stronger. Wait, isn't that a squid fishing boat? With those lights to lure them in, right? Exciting! But maybe if we move, there will be some room in our stomachs. Nope, still full! There are some local eateries around Hakodate, but we'll have to come back another time. We returned to the city and realized it's time to dive into the Tsugaru Strait. Right, we can just take it out and eat it on the Shinkansen later. So, we got Hakodate's Soul Food - Marukin Yakisoba. We heard from the locals that it's not that great, but we decided to try it anyway. Leaving Hakodate behind, we headed to Aomori on the Shinkansen. Let's have some Marukin Yakisoba while sipping on a canned chu-hi. Squid and pork? Interesting! Oh, there's nori seaweed on top too. Why? Well, let's give it a try. Drinking chu-hi with yakisoba, it feels like a festival. But the taste... not so great. Maybe it's the sauce that's missing... Oh well. I guess the locals really enjoy this dish. We were able to experience Hakodate's soul at the bottom of the Tsugaru Strait. Now, we've arrived in Aomori! But we're still hungry! What should we do next? Time to eat again! Don't forget to vote for us in the rankings! Thank you!

This is a rare yakisoba specialty shop in Hakodate that my father has been going to since his student days. It's a love-it-or-hate-it kind of place, but I have fond memories of coming here with my grandmother when I was little, so I still visit occasionally. I always order the jumbo meat yakisoba with extra sauce, enjoying the nostalgic old-fashioned taste. There are always regular customers here, so I think it's a B-class gourmet loved by the people of Hakodate. Near the shop, there is also a statue of Moonlight Mask, so it's worth checking out if you're interested.

At each table, there are dried seaweed, mayonnaise, sauce, and pepper lined up. This place is a specialty store for yakisoba. There is no beer or juice on the menu. Today, I ordered the squid yakisoba (580 yen). I thought it would be topped with squid in Hakodate, but the shy squid was not a noticeable presence. Also, the yakisoba is hardly seasoned. The noodles have very little moisture content and are very dry. They are slightly burnt in some places, which I think is the selling point of this shop, but I found the taste of the oil used a bit bothersome. The regular size is 430 yen, large is 530 yen, and extra-large is 630 yen. Toppings include egg, meat, and squid. The shop was established in 1954 and has been in business for many years, so it is worth a visit.

Satellite Matsukaze is a yakisoba specialty shop that is slyly tucked into a building that also houses a satellite off-track betting booth for keirin races and a tower parking lot. The building was once home to a movie theater affiliated with Nikkatsu Studios, hence the name Nikkatsu Parking. During its peak, there were many movie theaters in the Daimon area. Personally, I enjoyed grabbing some yakisoba here before heading to the movies. It may not be the most delicious, but it has a unique flavor. The meat yakisoba costs 610 yen and is cooked on an iron plate until sizzling hot. It tends to be slightly overcooked, resulting in the noodles breaking into small pieces and some parts getting burnt. I'm not exactly praising it, but I find myself coming back here regularly.

The final stop of this trip is "Yakisoba Marukin". It is about a 10-minute walk from Hakodate Station. There are a lot of empty lots in Hakodate. The restaurant is located in the same building as the Keirin track facility. I don't like yakisoba, but since it's in the same building as the Keirin track facility, I had to eat here. It was evening, so there were many customers getting takeout. I was the only one dining in the restaurant. The yakisoba with meat costs 610 yen, plus 130 yen for squid, and 50 yen for soup, totaling 790 yen. The food came out in just a few minutes. Honestly, I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. There were three takeout customers in a short time. Here, they use frozen rolled squid due to a shortage of fresh squid. This restaurant has a rating of 3.01 on "Tabelog" based on 18 reviews, which I found to be an accurate evaluation. Thank you for the meal. Tonight, I will be heading back to Hakodate again. Off I go, hehe.

Marukin is a yakisoba specialty shop located about a 2-minute walk from the Hakodate City Tram Matsukaze-machi stop. It is adjacent to the Hakodate Keirin Racecourse Satellite Matsukaze, making it about a 10-minute walk from JR Hakodate Station. When I visited around 6 pm during Golden Week, there were a few customers inside. This time, I ordered takeout. The menu posted at the entrance of the shop includes items such as regular yakisoba for 430 yen, yakisoba with meat for 610 yen, large size for 530 yen, large size with meat for 660 yen, extra-large for 650 yen, extra-large with meat for 770 yen, and various other options. The yakisoba comes with cabbage, meat, and pickled ginger, and the Worcestershire sauce provided adds moisture to the noodles. The shop also offers mayonnaise for customers to customize the flavor to their liking. Marukin is known for its nostalgic commercial jingle "Marukin Bicycle Hoii Hoii Hoii," and the brand has continued under Hodaka Bussan Co., Ltd. since Marukin Bicycle went bankrupt in 1977.

This is a yakisoba specialty store in Hakodate. My colleague had yakisoba with squid for 580 yen, while I had yakisoba with meat for 610 yen. The seasoning is simple, almost bland, so you can customize the flavor using sauce, mayonnaise, and seaweed on the table. The noodles were chewy and the slightly burnt sauce aroma stimulated my appetite, making it delicious. The restaurant has plenty of seats and a good turnover, so you can eat quickly. Thank you for the meal.

Yesterday in Aomori and today in Hakodate, I tried yakisoba. I went to a yakisoba restaurant located next to the Matsukaze-cho off-track betting parlor in Hakodate. During lunchtime, I couldn't decide and ended up ordering a regular yakisoba with meatballs and added squid on top, which cost 790 yen. I also ordered a 50 yen soup. Honestly, the egg might have been unnecessary. The noodles were thin and had a firm texture. The seasoning was on the lighter side, as you are supposed to adjust it with sauce later. The egg was not like a sunny-side-up egg but more like a hard-boiled egg, which absorbed the moisture from the sauce and made the yakisoba dry quickly. It was a bit disappointing. The portion size was quite generous.

This is a specialty yakisoba restaurant located in Matsukaze-cho, Hakodate. Despite being on the first floor of a bicycle race off-track betting parlor, it is actually a long-established restaurant founded in 1954. I visited around 12 pm on a weekday and it was about 40% full. I ordered the regular yakisoba with meatballs (660 yen). The food arrived in about 3 minutes. The eggs here are not placed on top like sunny-side up eggs, but mixed into the yakisoba and fried. It has a slightly dry and crumbly texture due to the eggs. Without eggs, it would probably be even drier. I don't mind the crumbly texture, but the light flavor was a bit of a problem. So, I added seaweed, pepper, sauce, and mayonnaise from the table. It ended up being a very ordinary yakisoba. The menu emphasizes squid, so adding squid toppings might have been the right choice.
