I visited Sushi Motoyama, which opened on November 1st in front of Kitano Station in Hachioji City. Rather than being a completely new restaurant, it seemed to have renovated an izakaya into a sushi place. There were two sushi chefs and two staff members from the izakaya handling orders, alcohol, serving, and cleaning up. When I arrived on Saturday at just past 11:30, there was a woman already there enjoying a draft beer while waiting for her sushi to be prepared. More customers came in, and the place gradually became lively.
I ordered the special lunch sushi set, which includes 12 pieces for 2,800 yen. I considered getting the 10-piece lunch set for 1,800 yen along with some sake, or the opening celebration bowl with sea bream, tuna, and sea urchin for 1,980 yen, but decided to go for the special lunch sushi set since I was treating myself. About 10 minutes later, the 12 pieces were served on a wooden tray.
On the top tier, from left to right: two pieces of fatty tuna, one piece of tuna, and one piece of squid. In the middle tier: shrimp, horse mackerel, salmon, and sea bream. The bottom tier included: fatty eel, salmon roe, sea urchin, and rolls of negitoro and pickled vegetables. The pieces of fish and rice were slightly larger than average, and both the fatty tuna and sea urchin were delicious. Since the 10-piece lunch included salmon roe, I felt the extra 1,000 yen for the sea urchin and fatty eel was reasonable. It was a quick and tasty meal, and I enjoyed it very much. There were also flowers delivered from Jun-chan Sushi.
