On August 14, 2023, the Awa Odori in Tokushima was fully held for the first time in four years, with premium box seats priced at 200,000 yen per person set up in a paid performance venue, as reported on TV. While I don't have the desire to go to Tokushima to watch the Awa Odori, I suddenly started craving "Tokushima Ramen." Ten years ago, I used to cross the Akashi-Ohashi Bridge and traverse Awaji Island once a month to go to Tokushima and conquer famous ramen shops, but recently I have been neglecting it, and I have been missing the rich and intense taste of the soy sauce pork bone broth that is unique to Tokushima Ramen. The ramen shop "Ramen Toudai" in Dotonbori has closed down, so I remembered "Chuka Soba Maruoka Shoten" located right next to Keihan Kyobashi Station. Although it looks a bit different from Tokushima Ramen, the soup is exactly like Tokushima Ramen. I arrived at the shop around 11:00 AM, with only two other customers present. I used the ticket vending machine and sat at the standing table in the front, and ordered a regular Chuka Soba with raw egg for 840 yen and rice for 150 yen. The ramen was served in just 6 minutes, and I dug in. In Tokushima, the ramen is known for its richly simmered pork belly, bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, chopped green onions, and topped with a raw egg. The rich soy sauce pork bone broth with the thick pork belly on top gives it a sukiyaki-like flavor. Therefore, a raw egg is a must, and white rice is essential. In this shop, instead of pork belly, they use chashu, and there are no bean sprouts, but the taste of the rich soup is exactly like Tokushima Ramen, a perfect accompaniment to rice. The straight thin noodles coated in the soup were delicious! They also served a chili oil with garlic chives that I had never seen before, and when added midway through, it gave a strong flavor change, reminiscent of Taiwanese ramen, which was also delicious. After enjoying the ramen and rice after a long time, I returned to Tenmabashi Station on the Keihan line. Bon appétit! (●^o^●)
