大阪めんま
Located in Toyotomi-cho, Teshio-gun, Hokkaido, the shop "Koubou L'etier" uses fresh milk from their own ranch to make handmade gelato and cheese without any additives. The family, who moved from Hyogo Prefecture, opened the ranch and, after 10 successful years, decided to open the shop in 2000 with the support of local investors, wanting people to taste their ranch's special milk through their cheeses and gelato. The name "L'etier" means "milk shop" in French. I came across this shop while searching for popular sweets in the area around Wakkanai during my visit. It is about a 40-minute drive from Wakkanai, but I had some extra time that day, so I decided to check it out. The shop is located in the middle of the mountains with no other shops nearby, and I had to double-check my GPS to make sure I was going in the right direction. It has a hidden gem feel to it. I visited the shop on a holiday Monday around 1:30 PM, and there were a few cars parked outside, indicating a decent amount of customers. Although the cafe menu had already ended by then, I was there for the gelato, so I bought some to enjoy in my car. They had a relatively small selection of gelato flavors, and I opted for the Triple (Milk, Pumpkin, Haskap) for 480 yen (tax included) in a cup. Looking back at the menu photos now, I realize that the Triple is supposed to be served in a cone, but I was given a cup without noticing. The Milk flavor had a unique yellowish color, reminiscent of custard, with a rich and flavorful taste that was absolutely delicious. The Haskap had a mild acidity and a mellow fruity taste. The Pumpkin was rich and had a rustic sweetness of pumpkin, which was also incredibly tasty. Among the three flavors I tried, I liked Milk the most, followed by Pumpkin and Haskap. The gelato exceeded my expectations and was definitely worth the trip from Wakkanai to this shop alone! It was a delightful experience!
