Choi, a standing bar in Sumikawa, was the second stop for a casual drink. I arrived around 4:30 PM, and to my surprise, there were only three customers, all solo drinkers. The staff, a friendly and handsome man in his 30s, asked if we needed ashtrays, and the lady next to me (later found out she was a mother of four) assured us it was fine to smoke. I ordered a highball for 400 yen and a giant corn snack for 200 yen. The food menu had a slight Italian influence with items like nuts, snacks, pickles, liver pate, pizza, cheese, and jamon serrano. Despite a few more customers coming and going, the conversation never stopped, and before I knew it, I had spent an hour and a half without realizing it. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it to the next planned stop due to the unexpected long stay. I had another highball and the total bill came to 1,000 yen. The attentive and kind service from the staff, even to first-time customers, made the experience enjoyable. If you're looking to start your Sumikawa drinking adventure, Choi is a great place to begin, just be mindful of unintentionally staying longer than planned. I ended the night with soba noodles. After enjoying fresh fish at "Mansho," head over to "Choi" for a different experience. Each store has a different concept, with the Choi on the second floor of M's East focusing on standing while the one near Sumikawa Station is a standing bar. I visited with three others on a Thursday around 9 pm. There were already many customers standing. We were squeezed in and stood at the edge of the counter in a C-shape. Cheers! The fun part of standing at the counter is the interaction with others. Our bags were hung on hooks under the counter. Drinks included wine in a decanter, highballs, and plum wine. The conversation among us four ladies continued, with plans for the next girls' night out being discussed. For snacks, we had dried fruits for 200 yen a scoop and fried cheese with chorizo and vegetables. The manager kindly adjusted the portion for four people. It's a great place for a solo visit as well, as you could easily make new friends. We stayed for about an hour and the total bill for four people was around 4000 yen. Next time we drink in Sumikawa, I'll definitely visit here early and aim for a zero-person night out!

We had a seafood feast with four people in July 2019, and afterwards we decided to go to Choi's at the Sogawa subway station. We returned to the restaurant where we had a light drink last time. When we peeked inside, it looked full, but once we entered, space opened up for us. Each of us ordered drinks and made a toast. The atmosphere was lively with young customers chatting happily. The manager told us that many customers who come here for the first time end up loving the place. We were intrigued by a large bottle of dried fruits on the table and decided to order it. The cheese fries were originally three pieces, but the manager kindly offered to make it four pieces for us. The chorizo came with vegetables, making us feel like we ordered two dishes. The manager was busy making pizza dough while keeping an eye on the customers. It's a small standing bar but a cozy place to drink. We decided to go to another restaurant in Sogawa afterwards. It was the 4th gathering of the October 2018 offline meeting with just two people! We only stayed for 15 minutes, but we really enjoyed the place and might become regulars. It was already past the time when the subway stopped running. When we entered, there were 5 customers already there and 2 more came in after us. They couldn't provide any snacks at that time, but the staff was wearing makeup that made them look like they might get stopped by the police. We ordered a glass of sparkling wine, which was served in a cup that spilled onto the saucer below. It had a nice fizz to it. Since it was a standing bar, we couldn't stay for long. Sapporo Off-meeting 4th party (o’∀`)♪ Unfortunately, it's time for the last train ( ´-ω-) Other people are heading to Susukino by subway, but my home is far away so I'll go back... A local person is willing to accompany me to another place for a quick drink until my chauffeur arrives in about 30 minutes. The standing bar we tried to enter for the 3rd party was too crowded, so we returned to the shop where we couldn't get in earlier. The staff asked, "Food service has ended, is that okay?" Since I can't eat anymore, it's fine! It actually saves me from feeling obligated to order something (*´∀人) Sparkling wine ( ﾟДﾟ)ﾉ with 'almost overflowing bubbles' seemed to be their specialty. I joked that I would be happy if they actually spilled some into a saucer for me. The staff was very friendly and attentive, especially good at handling drunk customers. The person had a Halloween-themed makeup similar to Tatsuya of Golden Bomber, and I asked if they didn't get stopped by the police. They replied, "I haven't walked outside with this makeup yet." I wonder if they made it home safely without any issues (((*≧艸≦)ﾌﾟﾌﾟｯ It was a cozy and nice place, thanks to the staff's great service (´∀｀) It's all about the manpower of the staff, right? After leaving the sushi restaurant, the four of us who had made plans to meet again in four weeks decided to continue drinking and chatting at the standing bar "Choi Sumigawa". This was my third time at a standing bar (the first time I paid extra to sit down), and while the first two times I went alone, this time I realized how much fun it can be to stand and chat. I learned this when the manager told us that besides us, the other customers were mostly solo diners. People would stop by, chat and drink, and then leave in a familiar manner, which made me feel like there was a serendipitous element to this place even in the Reiwa era. Of course, we were perfectly content with just our group, but having a place like this nearby to stop by before heading home is fantastic. Plus, they also serve authentic pizzas made from scratch, including the dough fermentation process done in the restaurant. We enjoyed fried cheese, sausages, and dried snacks, and were completely satisfied. Throughout our visit, I could see that the skills of the manager, who was constantly observing and making decisions in the restaurant, were what made the place special. Thank you for the wonderful meal, I look forward to visiting again after enjoying sushi.

The nearby tobacco shop used to have Short Hope... It's been 25 years since then, and a lot has changed. I've grown into a respectable non-smoker now, and I think it would be nice if restaurants at least had some sort of smoking section. Oh, by the way, that nearby tobacco shop has now turned into a place called Gentleman Jack Highball. Just a heads up, they don't have a restroom so those with overactive bladders should be cautious. As I stroke the counter made of Sapporo soft stone, thinking about ordering a delicious pizza, I can't help but notice the smoke coming from the next table... It used to be called "purple smoke" back in the day, adding to the atmosphere. But now, times have changed, and in some cases, it's almost like pollution... However, it might take a little while for smokers to change their manners and awareness.

Opening the windows gives a sense of openness, making it enjoyable in the summer. The owner used to be at Choi and said, "If you have a chance, come over here too." Nice to see you again. What should I drink? I'll read the atmosphere and go for a Cassis Bevy (= ´∀´)ﾉ凵゛. On the wall, there are various types of snacks, including meat and bar menu. The long and thin pizza is famous, but there are 7 varieties - I wonder if everyone doesn't share or eat them all... I'll be defeated on an empty stomach. The kitchen looks narrow, with a small kiln next to it that uses charcoal. The quality of the asparagus depends on Max Valu. This one phrase is good, right? I decided on the bacon asparagus. It's really long like a straw when you pull it, the cheese is also long! The dough wrapped in charcoal is both chewy and crispy. The asparagus tastes like Max Valu. This time, I received a mission from the owner of the usual restaurant and promptly went to visit. It took less than a minute to walk from the north exit of Sumikawa Station to the restaurant. There were already seven customers inside the restaurant, which can accommodate about 10 people. I took a seat at the end of the counter next to the pizza oven. I ordered a "draft beer" for starters and watched the progress of the pizza being made. The size of the pizza was about the size of my palm. When I asked for a recommendation, I was told to try the "Kaku Highball," so I ordered that. It was said to be extra carbonated, but to me, it didn't seem much different from a regular highball. This time, I was on my way to my usual restaurant, so my visit lasted about 30 minutes. However, I was bothered by the cigarette smoke as it was coming from the kitchen area.
