Faraway town. A town along the sea on the way to Wakkanai. There are few eateries, and I was torn between visiting Meruhen-san or another nearby restaurant, but due to time constraints, I ended up at Meruhen-san. My impression is that the side dishes are plentiful and reasonably tasty, but the rice... why. The drive to Wakkanai was enjoyable with the picturesque Moeru Kitahoro Oro Line, although it was a little past 11 o'clock. My first choice for lunch was Donbei-san, but we arrived in Faraway town faster than expected, and Donbei-san, which opens at 11:30, was not open, so we went to Meruhen-san. Still, it was the second choice. Since it was my first visit, I was excited. There is parking for about 6 cars next to the restaurant. I had decided on the A bento for 1,100 yen, and my companion also had the same. The other companion ordered the shrimp cutlet set for 1,100 yen. The prices were a bit high, probably due to the location. There were no other customers, which made me feel a bit uneasy. I waited while listening to the sound of frying from the kitchen. The food was served in 16-17 minutes. There was a slight feeling of waiting, even though there were no other customers, but it was a reasonable waiting time for homemade food. A Bento for 1,100 yen. A generous portion. Ginger pork, hamburger, fried white fish, salad, grilled salmon, kamaboko, sweet egg, simmered kelp, pickles, miso soup. The rice was Japanese rice. Let me start with the delicious ones. 1. Grilled salmon → It had a good amount of fat and was delicious. It was not red salmon, but it was satisfying. The salmon that goes well with rice. 2. Ginger pork → The seasoning was light. But that's good. Thick pork with a good texture. 3. Hamburger → It was a small size, but it was so tender that I couldn't pick it up with chopsticks. Yet, the meat flavor was strong and surprisingly delicious hamburger. The ones I found delicious were: Fried white fish → It was freshly fried, and the crust was delicious, but it had a square shape? It was a bit unusual. It was fish, but it didn't have a fishy taste. If it had a bit more plumpness of fish, it would have been better. Salad → The dressing was delicious. The cabbage was cut large, making it a bit difficult to eat. Perhaps due to the season, the freshness, including the tomatoes, was not felt. The cucumber was good. Kamaboko → Common kamaboko. Sweet egg → Sweet-tasting sweet omelette. It becomes a proper side dish when you pour soy sauce on it. Simmered kelp → The seasoning was not too strong, and it was good. There was plenty of it. Pickles → Thick pickled daikon. The texture was enjoyable. Miso soup → Miso soup with eringi mushrooms and nameko mushrooms. It was slightly light, but that was good. Honestly, the content for 1,100 yen and considering the location, the satisfaction level was quite high. But my personal disappointing point was... the rice!!! The rice was cooked hard. Why serve such rice right after opening!? Is it the quality of the rice itself, or has it been cooked for a long time... I'm not sure how much I can write. I love rice, but I left it for the first time in years. The smell was... not good. It was lumpy in some parts, and the smell of those lumps was particularly strong. Even though there were side dishes that went well with rice, with this kind of rice... The staff's service was good, and the young male and female staff members were all nice. The pink paper napkins, perhaps from the name "Meruhen," were cute, and it was nice that there were plenty of seasonings available. There were many manga to read, including Golden Kamuy. If the rice was delicious, I would have wanted to come back, so I left the restaurant feeling very disappointed. I'm sorry for leaving the rice... I tried the shrimp cutlet of my companion, and it was incredibly delicious. If there was a hamburger using that shrimp cutlet, I would like to try it. No repeat visit.
