September 2022, 2nd visit. I was in the mood for a rice dish this day, and I also wanted to try the menchi katsu here, so I decided to go to "Tonkatsu Dokoro Yoshitsune". It had been 10 years since my first visit (^^; When I told the chef, who is from Izumi, that I wanted the menchi katsu set without even looking at the menu, he said they couldn't make it today, so I had to choose something else. - Chicken katsu set (900 yen) The meat wasn't that big, but there were two pieces and they were quite tender, which was a good impression! The breading was crispy, and the sauce didn't have any particular standout feature, but it had a nice, classic tonkatsu restaurant feel. Rice refills are free, but it's unclear if cabbage and miso soup refills are also free. Compared to the menu from 10 years ago, prices have gone up by 30-50 yen, but there are still items with the same prices (special fillet katsu set, assorted cutlet set), so it feels quite fair. I also ordered a fillet katsu sandwich to take home for the family, and I noticed that they use fresh bread here. When I was a kid, I used to love ordering katsu sandwiches at Western-style restaurants, but they always came with toast, so I thought katsu sandwiches were meant to be eaten with toast. Is it different here, or is it just for takeout? I'll aim for the menchi katsu next time (^^;

During my first visit to Otaru in May 2022, I noticed that there were not many deep-fried food restaurants like tonkatsu or tempura. However, I decided to visit a place next to a highly recommended tempura restaurant called "Bon" in Otaru. The kitchen had one male chef and a female server. While I usually enjoy tonkatsu, I also have a liking for chicken katsu. I ordered the chicken katsu set meal for 900 yen. The portion was generous with two large pieces of chicken thigh meat. The cabbage and rice were refillable. The homemade breadcrumbs and meticulously prepared miso soup added a nice touch to the meal. Although the sauce was a commercial brand, the attention to detail in making fresh breadcrumbs and miso soup was commendable. The overall experience was a mix of ordinary and unique aspects, making it a good option for a budget-friendly lunch, especially for office workers. I'm already contemplating whether to try the menchikatsu or tonkatsu next time, or perhaps consider the tempura at the neighboring "Bon" restaurant.

Otaru, where some restaurants that had been closed have started to reopen. Today, I felt like having a hearty meal, so I decided to go to a tonkatsu restaurant I had never been to before. Luckily, they were open for business. There were no other customers when I arrived. The restaurant had three sunken kotatsu seats and a counter. I decided to sit in a sunken kotatsu and ordered the special premium pork cutlet set meal for 1350 yen. The meal included rice, tonkatsu, miso soup, burdock salad, and pickles, as well as ground white sesame and Western-style mustard for the tonkatsu. I wasn't sure if I was eating it the right way, but I first ground the sesame and sprinkled it on the tonkatsu, then poured the sauce on top. The meat was tender and crispy, and the sauce was sweet and complemented the meat well. Although I didn't feel like it was particularly "premium," it was still delicious. The tonkatsu wasn't greasy, so it felt light to eat. The rice, miso soup, burdock salad, and pickles were all tasty, and I wished I had more of the burdock salad. Overall, it was a satisfying tonkatsu restaurant, and I will definitely go back. Thank you for the meal!

Welcome! ┌¬o"* * * 2015.06 ↓ When you walk through the Sushiya Street in the Iro-Uchi district of Otaru City, there is a hidden gem that is not along the street, but tucked away. Why can't there be a tonkatsu restaurant on Sushiya Street?! This is the only tonkatsu restaurant in Otaru with a surprising twist. "|o| °д°)ノ Gara-ra-ra "Welcome~♪" A high-pitched greeting and the sight of two young ladies behind the counter... What could this mean? While pondering this unexpected scenario, a gentle voice next to me says, "Welcome~♪" The warm air envelops me with the kind demeanor of the owner. The facade looks like a long-established place, and the atmosphere reflects it. The counter and three sunken kotatsu tables show their years of experience. I decided to sit at a kotatsu table as the counter was busy with deliveries. The magazines are old, featuring Polarco and Jalan. Are the young ladies' information also outdated? ← That's unlikely. The loud music is blaring, creating a lively atmosphere. The lack of windows makes the interior stuffy, but it can't be helped. The kitchen, even more so × 50, is hot. While worrying about the chef, the young ladies are ready to serve. The dedication to tonkatsu is evident in the locally sourced meat, rice from Toyama, and original blend oil. They also offer takeout and bulk deliveries, with a monthly tonkatsu set on offer. When I cut into the tonkatsu, the crispy batter peels back... The sauce, rich in vegetable sweetness, is generously poured over the tonkatsu. The crispy texture and flavorful meat make for a delicious combination. The shredded cabbage and rice can be refilled. The cabbage is crunchy, and the rice is fluffy with a strong sweetness. Even after eating fried food, you'll want more. The macaroni salad and pickles are a satisfying way to finish the meal. While eating, the young ladies are full of energy, and the chef is focused. The sense of accomplishment at the end of the meal is also soothing. Thank you for the wonderful meal. To the lively chef, please keep coming back. Enjoy! ===========

In May 2014, for some unknown reason, there are very few "tonkatsu" (pork cutlet) restaurants in the town of Otaru. While there are restaurants that serve tonkatsu on their menu, specialty tonkatsu restaurants are almost extinct. There used to be a branch of Hokkaido Iizumi in the past, but it closed down a few years ago. Currently, this restaurant is the only tonkatsu specialty restaurant listed on Tabelog. The restaurant is located near the Sushi Street in Hanazono, next to a tempura restaurant. The menu includes a variety of tonkatsu options such as loin, fillet, minced meat, skewers, chicken katsu, shrimp fry, and oyster fry. They also offer rice bowl dishes and tonkatsu sandwiches. The prices range from around 900 yen to a maximum of 1600 yen, which is relatively reasonable for a tonkatsu specialty restaurant. I tried the "Special Loin Cutlet Set" this time, along with other options like "Special Fillet Cutlet Set," "Shrimp Fry Set," and "Fillet Cutlet Rice Bowl" for 1350 yen. The taste was decent for the price, but not exceptional. The portion of meat and quality did not quite live up to the "special" label. The option for unlimited rice and cabbage refills was a nice touch, although the initial serving of cabbage was quite small. The difference in price between the regular "tonkatsu set" and the "special" set was 380 yen, which may vary in value depending on individual preferences. Overall, it is a decent tonkatsu restaurant for the general public, with some room for improvement in terms of portion size and pricing. One minor drawback was the loud sound of meat pounding during dinner service, which may be bothersome to some customers.

On October 4, 2012, I visited a tonkatsu specialty restaurant called "Yoshitsune" for lunch today. I wonder how long this place has been around... It looks like it's been over 10 years, but I only recently found out about it. Apparently, the owner of this place used to work at "Tonkatsu Isen," which closed temporarily last year. So this place is the only tonkatsu specialty restaurant in the city. The interior has about 4-5 counter seats and 3 small raised tables, and it's a cozy space with women drinking beer at the counter during the day and men in work clothes at the raised tables. The menu includes tonkatsu (pork loin, fillet), kushikatsu, shrimp fry, oyster fry, fillet cutlet sandwich, ginger pork, katsudon, ebi-don, and other side dishes. I was planning to get the special pork loin cutlet set, but when I saw a sign on the wall offering a discount this week, I changed my mind. The pork here is made from Akaike Village salad pork, the rice is a blend of Toyama Koshihikari, and they use a blend of corn salad oil and pure lard for frying, which seems to be their special touch. It arrived in about 10 minutes. I was a bit unsure about how to eat it - grinding white sesame seeds and mixing them with the sauce in a pot, but I ended up just sprinkling the ground sesame seeds on the tonkatsu (I'm not used to eating at tonkatsu restaurants). The tonkatsu sauce seemed like a typical medium-thick type. The cutlet was a deep fox color and had a decent crispy texture. I was hoping for some fat in the pork loin, but it was perfectly trimmed (tears). It was a tasty cutlet with a good chew, but the lack of fat was very disappointing... You can get free refills of rice and cabbage, which is a plus, but I really want to know why the fat was removed!! But it was my first time at the restaurant and I was dining alone, so I was too embarrassed to ask... (T_T) As I left the restaurant, all I could think about was the fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat... fat

When it comes to Otaru, the impression is sushi, Italian, yakiniku, pork cartilage skewers, fried chicken, retro ice cream, and popular restaurant Sankawa-ya. However, on the side street of the sushi restaurant street, there is a place that has been emitting a good smell for a while, making me curious. I tried to visit four times before, but it was always closed, perhaps they close from around 2 pm to 6 pm. Finally, this time I was able to go there by bicycle from Sapporo and arrived around 11 am. I was the only customer, but the inside of the restaurant was busy with a large order of bento boxes. The middle-aged beautiful waitress served me barley tea with a smile. I ordered a non-alcoholic beer while waiting. I had to wait for quite a while, but looking at the beautiful people around me made the wait bearable. The tonkatsu here is from the Izumi series, but it is lighter. It is fried in lard, but the meat is from local Akai River pork, making it light and not too greasy, with a crispy exterior and juicy inside. The meat is soft with all the tendons removed, a modern tonkatsu from a truly specialized store. According to Hiketsu-dono, this is the only tonkatsu specialty store in Otaru. There are many yakiniku restaurants, but only this one specializes in tonkatsu. The way they serve it is similar to Tamafuji, where you grate the sesame and add the sauce yourself. Mustard was provided later, and soy sauce was also available, which was nice. The rice was delicious, and the small side dishes were also good. Overall, the cost-performance ratio is excellent. It seemed like it was run by an old man alone, but there were also surprise visuals with beautiful middle-aged sisters. It made me want to go for a drink at night and have a skewer katsu... Hahaha.

Today in Otaru, just like the rest of the country, it was hot, and my partner gave up on preparing dinner. So, we decided to have dinner at a tonkatsu restaurant in a corner of Sushi Street. We met up with our daughter after school and visited the restaurant as a family. We had been talking about going to this tonkatsu restaurant as a family for a while. Inside the restaurant, it was a bit stuffy... My partner ordered the Hire Katsu set meal, while my daughter and I ordered the Tonkatsu set meal. We started by grinding sesame seeds with a grinder. Then we poured the sesame seeds and sauce over the tonkatsu. The tonkatsu sauce had a tangy flavor that stood out when poured over the tonkatsu. Maybe regular soy sauce would have been better? The meat was firm and crispy, not really juicy. It was a typical tonkatsu. Oh, by the way, tonkatsu restaurants usually offer unlimited cabbage and rice refills, but it seems like this restaurant doesn't have that option. Well, that's okay. Lately, my partner has been worried about my health and has issued a "stop ordering extra large portions" decree, so it's probably for the best (laughs).
