On the way to Alshon from Kasuya, I found a Showa retro coffee shop. I decided to visit the next day as I was going to have crepes at Alshon that day. The exterior and interior of the shop were truly authentic and retro, to the point where it could be designated as a Showa heritage site. The coffee menu was easy to understand, with clear indications of the roasting method. I ordered the Mandheling, which was the darkest roast, and added a homemade pudding. The water served was not too cold, as it did not have ice. However, when I tasted the coffee, I noticed a slight machine-like smell. The coffee was brewed after the order was placed, using a dripper for the pour-over method. From the counter, I could see that the beans were ground to a medium-coarse grind. The barista first moistened the beans, then poured the hot water twice in two separate rounds, finishing with a total of three pours. The coffee was served promptly, without much wait. However, I couldn't help but wonder if the brewing time was too short for this grind size. When I tasted the coffee, I found it to be more acidic than bitter or astringent, with a somewhat diluted flavor profile. It lacked the richness and aroma I was expecting. Priced at 770 yen, I wished there was a higher bean-to-water ratio to bring out a more robust and flavorful taste. The accompanying cream was not plant-based, which was a relief. I added it to the coffee to enhance the richness. As for the pudding, the texture was creamy and rich, with a lovely eggy flavor and just the right amount of sweetness, which I enjoyed. However, the caramel sauce was too thin and watery, lacking the thick, bittersweet quality that would complement the pudding well. Overall, it felt like having a great lead actor but weak supporting actors in a movie, where the lack of cohesion diminishes the overall experience. The atmosphere inside was cozy and completely smoke-free, making it a pleasant environment to enjoy coffee and sweets. It was also convenient that they accepted card payments. If I were to visit again, I might try their Dutch coffee or iced coffee next time.
