I went on a one night, two day business trip to Osaka today. For lunch on the first day, I visited a Italian restaurant called "TAMANEGI" that I had been curious about for a while. It is located just a short walk north from Yotsubashi Station on Yotsubashi-suji Street, past the first traffic light and then turning left at the next intersection. The restaurant is on the first floor of a building on the left side. Inside, there are 6-person and 2-person tables, as well as a counter, in a relatively small space. The interior, with its brown tiles, seems to be inspired by the restaurant's name "TAMANEGI." I was seated at the counter, where I could see the kitchen with a female chef and her assistant working. The service was handled by a male waiter. Now, onto the order. There are two lunch options: the regular "A course" and the "B course" which includes a main dish. The main dish options are fish, beef, local chicken, or Ezo deer. I chose the "B course" with beef as the main dish. Here is what I had:
- Marinated and seared Wakayama Tsubasu (young yellowtail) "Buri": This dish featured marinated Tsubasu, a young yellowtail known as a "rising fish," seared and served on top of red turnips and spinach with a tangy sauce. The balance of acidity, the richness of the Tsubasu, and the sauce was perfect, making it a flawless appetizer.
- Hokkaido Pastured Pork Country-style Pate: Thickly sliced pate made from pastured pork with a slightly wild taste, served with homemade mayonnaise and whole peppercorn sauce. The pickled vegetables on the side added a nice contrast to the richness of the pate.
- Camas and Organic Vegetable Peperoncino: This dish featured organic vegetables such as edamame, lotus root, red eggplant, shimeji mushrooms, and celery, along with a mild-flavored Camas fish in a gentle peperoncino sauce.
- Hokkaido Pastured Beef Grill: The final main dish was a luxurious and hearty grilled piece of pastured beef with onions and leeks, seasoned simply with salt. The natural sweetness of the vegetables and the chewiness of the pastured beef were delightful.
What stood out in all the dishes was the careful selection of ingredients to preserve their flavors, along with delicate attention to detail and solid culinary skills. While I only experienced their lunch menu, I could sense the feminine touch of the female chef. The kitchen also paid attention to details like timing, ensuring a delightful dining experience up to the last espresso. I look forward to visiting for dinner next time. The bill came to 5,500 yen. Thank you for the wonderful meal!
