I had the Borscht set meal for 500 yen. It is a healthy soup with lots of vegetables. It has a red-purple color because it contains beets, and it was a sweet soup.

Hakodate, or rather the major tourist spot in Hokkaido, the "Western District". From the entrance of Hakodate Nishi High School, there is a straight road leading down towards the sea called "Hachiman-zaka". At the top of this slope, next to a popular photo spot, there is a white building which is the "Far Eastern Federal University Hakodate Campus" also known as "Far Eastern University Hakodate Campus". They serve vegetarian set meals and even Russian dishes like borscht set meals. Parking is very limited at the building, so it's recommended to use nearby parking lots or enjoy a stroll around the area which is a popular tourist spot. Inside the entrance of the slope, there is a place called "Kitchen Hachiman-zaka". It's a small university cafeteria with a door that looks like it leads to a large lecture hall haha. Since it's a university facility, outsiders can freely enter without hesitation. The menu is displayed in the hallway, allowing you to choose at your own pace. And of course, the prices are reasonable!!! We were the only customers as we arrived right after they opened. A couple of students came in to buy onigiri. Seeing them chatting with the staff, it felt like the distance between students and staff was close. We chose today's lunch and waited. It seemed like a place where students gather to chat in between lectures, giving off a school-like atmosphere. About three older sisters were working efficiently in the kitchen, one of them told us, "It will get crowded with students after their lectures end." And then, the fried chicken set meal arrived. It was a simple yet satisfying plate, with some vegetables, reminiscent of a cafe's lunch set!! I thought it was a bit small, but after finishing it, I felt a sense of accomplishment. In terms of being able to head straight to dessert after the meal, I think it was just the right amount. The lunch at the university cafeteria, enjoyed with a slightly rejuvenated feeling, was delicious!! It has been featured in local free papers and newspapers, and they welcome non-students to use the cafeteria. *As it also serves as a school cafeteria, it is closed on school holidays and long breaks. Please check the operating days before visiting.
