On January 31, 2023, a holiday Tuesday, I took care of some errands in the neighborhood in the morning and then headed home. For lunch, I went to Shunkarou in Nishinakajima Minamigata for their curry. In the evening, I visited Shunkatou, a popular izakaya with a dual menu for different seasons. It had been a while since I had their curry lunch! The restaurant had recommended arriving after 12:45 pm for a more relaxed experience, so I aimed for that time. However, I got caught up in cleaning my house (bathrooms, toilets, kitchen, etc.) and ended up rushing to Nishinakajima Minamigata just before 1 pm! When I arrived, there were four customers at the counter and one at a table, and it seemed like they had been busy just a little while ago. Being a bit late turned out to be the right decision (laughs). The restaurant had a new setup with female staff in the front and two male chefs in the kitchen. They were both very friendly. Even at the later hours, with groups of four and solo diners, the place was still very popular! I ordered my usual favorite, the two-curry combo for 990 yen, with free extra spiciness (price increase is understandable). The topping I used to order, the spicy horse meat salad, was no longer available, but they had three limited-time toppings, so I decided to go all out and order all of them! I had the spicy potato salad for 100 yen, the drunken beef tendon curry for 300 yen, and the pickled mushroom for 150 yen. The curry that day was a luxurious one with two pieces of marinated amberjack from Himi, a premium brand. The seasonal fish broth curry had Himi amberjack, mackerel, and tilefish small fish, along with seasonal vegetables and minced chicken keema with lotus root, eggplant, and shiso leaf. I enjoyed both separately at first before mixing them together. With a soft-boiled egg, the spiciness was mellowed out. I felt like it could have been a bit spicier, but it was so delicious that I licked the plate clean! The total came to 1440 yen, paid in cash. It was a fantastic curry lunch on a holiday!
