Today, I arrived at a small diner that had just opened, and as soon as I got there, I found my friends from the neighborhood already there, ready for a "shared table dining experience." The place had 2 tables and 4 counter seats, with a cozy interior. The menu was limited at the time of opening, but one item that caught my attention was the Zaru Soba for 770 yen. The daily special set meal for 550 yen was served in a bento box style, with a good balance of meat, fish, vegetables, sweet and salty flavors, colors, fried, boiled, grilled dishes, and a generous portion of rice and side dishes. The white rice, made from local Hokkaido rice, was cooked perfectly. The miso soup was also homemade and delicious. However, the portion size seemed to be just right for the target customers, and the temperature of the side dishes was a bit lukewarm, which could be improved. The operation seemed well thought out, but there was room for improvement in making the side dishes hotter and adding more variety to the flavors. The diner is located right across from a popular long-standing eatery, which could be seen as a bold move. However, having different unique qualities could lead to a synergistic effect rather than direct competition. It would be beneficial for the new diner to have a standout menu item that sets it apart from the competition. Overall, I admire the courage and spirit of the new diner and look forward to hearing about its progress and other menu offerings from local reviewers.
