Delicious! The mochi was smooth and the anko filling was generous. The handmade feel of being wrapped in plastic wrap added to the charm. The quiet area without many tourists gave it an authentic, traditional vibe. The nearby bakery also had a similar atmosphere, reminding me of what Otaru used to be like. I'm not sure how long this shop has been around, but the quality is top-notch. Next time, I'll have to try the whole bean daifuku, beko mochi, and skewered dango! They also had red rice available. Thank you for the meal! ♡

It was just a draft! The name of the shop has a good vibe, right? It feels like something good will happen when you eat there!! Japanese people really like these kind of auspicious things, don't they? I discovered this place while patrolling around here some time ago! I was really drawn to the unusual shio mochi they had! When I tried it, it had a nostalgic taste... Later I found out that my grandmother used to buy it often from there! (I totally didn't remember that) It turns out that the one-shaku mochi for my niece's first birthday celebration was also from there! (In Otaru, it seems like they carry one-shaku mochi for celebrations, right?) (Of course, we were all made to carry it too) ・Shiso mochi → This is delicious and nostalgic! I want to go back and buy it again! I think I used to eat it a lot when I was a child. ・Kusa mochi → The mugwort flavor is quite strong! The scent of real bamboo leaves is also nice. ・Mame mochi → Just delicious according to them. ・Sweet red bean rice cake → Full of sweet red beans and the texture is just right. I want to visit this shop near Homac and Yunohana, and also stop by the bakery "Rich" nearby. I had a fun chat with the shop manager! There has been a "beckoning cat" in the shop since the opening, but it was getting dirty over time, so I couldn't help but clean it up and display it nicely. Then one day, I got scolded by an antique shop owner?... I laughed a little about that. It's true that the beckoning cat in old shops tends to get dirty over time, right? While we were talking, some young salarymen in a car showed up and bought a lot of stuff. They especially ordered a lot of "shiso mochi"! "I love the shiso mochi here!" they said with a big smile. It seems to be very popular among men because it's not too sweet! Also, the old-fashioned wrapping paper is lovely♪ I really like the designs on the wrapping paper of traditional shops - I can't throw them away, I end up collecting them!

Beko Mochi 160 + Daifuku with Beans 160 + Strawberry Daifuku 270 yen Beko Mochi: A mochi covered in burnt tea powder, with a sweet and flavorful taste of black sugar. The unique appearance gives way to a nostalgic chewy texture. Daifuku with Beans: The beans provide a satisfying crunch and the salt balances out the sweetness nicely. I wish I had bought more of these. Strawberry Daifuku: The strawberries are wrapped in mochi without spilling out, making it easy to eat. While not visually striking, it is a convenient snack. I arrived on a Saturday at 9:10 am, and when I opened the sliding door, the owner was busy working but stopped to assist me. The shop is located on the outskirts of town, offering a wide variety of products. It doesn't seem to attract many tourists, but locals probably appreciate it for everyday use. I wanted to try the dango as well, but I had other items on my list. Overall, I left feeling quite satisfied.

Early morning stroll in Otaru Temiya starting from the eighth shop... The readers must think I'm an idiot ^ ^ Going around food and drink shops early in the morning, this is the eighth stop... And the place I visited while walking was "Yamaterasu Kaifukumochi", a shop with a auspicious name. The entrance of the shop is a glass sliding door, but even when you open it, there is no space for people to enter, and a showcase is placed right at the edge of the glass door. There is a bell placed there, so I picked it up and rang it, but there was no response. Peeking into the back of the shop through the gap in the showcase, I saw the shop owner right there... I rang the bell a little stronger the second time, but still no response. Just as I was thinking of calling out, the shop owner finished his work and was about to enter the back of the shop. I shook the bell with all my might, "Chirin Chirin♪". The shop owner finally noticed and greeted me with "Irasshaimase". The shop owner, who was around 80 years old, seemed to have hearing problems, so he used a slightly louder voice, with clear articulation, to take my order. I bought "Strawberry Daifuku @270" and "Sakuramochi @160". Since my wife is not a fan of strawberry daifuku, I ended up eating it halfway. It was small but had a juicy ripe strawberry inside, with a well-balanced sweetness of the red bean paste. The contrast between the chewy outer skin was exquisite. In Otaru, there are quite a few small mochi and traditional Japanese sweets shops, and I have been using them here and there. I often feel that many shops have sweet red bean paste with a strong salty taste. I had almost given up, thinking it was due to the strong taste typical of the seaside, but the red bean paste here was elegantly sweet and very much to my liking. I brought the "Sakuramochi" as a souvenir for my wife, so unfortunately, I didn't get to taste it myself. I regret not buying 2-3 more. I will visit again if I have the chance. Thank you for the meal. The stroll in Otaru Temiya continues ahead ^ ^

There is a unique treat called "suama" made from kneaded joshinko flour. It is said to be sweet and chewy. I have been searching for it since I heard about it. It seems to be a specialty of the northern region. I saw it on a TV variety show and decided to visit this shop in Otaru. Suama is like a chewy mochi, slightly sweet. It is traditionally eaten during celebratory occasions. The dango was also delicious. If you ever visit Otaru, I recommend stopping by this shop. The deliciousness is truly unique and can only be found here.

I wish there was a traditional Japanese sweets shop like this in my neighborhood. The lineup of old-fashioned Japanese sweets is so satisfying and never gets old. The mochi is soft and stretchy. I want to try other products too, so I'll definitely stop by again when I go to Otaru. (^^)

Now, let's start the Otaru food tour! After watching Team Nacks on TV the other day, I just had to go check it out. I arrived before 9 o'clock and there weren't many customers yet, so I was able to buy easily. The mochi shop had a historical feel to it! - Suama for 140 yen? - Beko mochi for ? yen - Skewered dango for ? yen I don't remember the prices. The freshly made mochi was soft and delicious! It was like a baby's cheek, haha. The atmosphere of the shop was really nice.

This is a mochi shop located in the Temiya district of Otaru. It was established in 1938. In September 2009, there were many mochi shops in Otaru, but this shop's beko mochi is unique because all of them are brown. In the past, white sugar was scarce, so black sugar was cheaper. The beko mochi is finished with the color of black sugar. The name beko mochi comes from the two-tone color of white and brown resembling a cow, but it doesn't really fit (more like a beef cow?). The mochi is shiny and the flavor of black sugar stands out. You can also enjoy the flavor of mochi rice and uruchi rice. When you first bite into it, it may seem a bit tough, but it gradually becomes chewy. The skewered dango mochi comes in three large balls. While it's good to have large balls, it felt like there was a bit less soy sauce dressing. Otaru has many mochi shops, so it might be fun to explore the unique characteristics of each shop's mochi. In June 2012, my partner wanted to eat sweets, so we decided to stop by for some dango since we were driving around the Temiya area. The soy sauce dango is still big as ever. One stick can be quite filling. If you eat two sticks for a snack at 3 o'clock, you might not feel like eating much for dinner and get scolded for not using your chopsticks properly, so be careful. They had a rare daifuku called "shiso daifuku." Shiso is red shiso, similar to the sprinkling seasoning "yukari." The mochi has a shiso flavor with a perfect salt accent. The smooth coarse red bean paste has just the right amount of sweetness. The balance of mochi and red bean paste, salt and sugar is perfect! I've had plain daifuku, bean daifuku, and yomogi daifuku before, but I was blown away by this "shiso daifuku." When I got home, the weather was nice, so I ate it outside. It's been a while since I enjoyed a sweet treat under the gentle sunshine. Bitter tea and Japanese sweets. Ah, being Japanese is great... For dinner, my partner wasn't very hungry, so we managed to have a peaceful meal.

This is a place in Nishincho, Otaru City, but it may not be known to those who are not from Otaru. You can check the location on Tabelog's map as usual. The shop is located in a charming shopping street on the mountain side of Temiya. There are two "mochi shops" in this shopping street, and the first one to visit is Kaifuku Mochi. The shop is easy to spot, with the door left open and a showcase in front displaying various products, some of which may be sold out. I purchased the usual "daifuku" and "kusamochi" before heading to the next shop. After enjoying "ebiten soba" at another shop, I had the "kusamochi" for dessert. The red bean paste was smooth and not too sweet, and the mochi had a light flavor of mugwort, making it easy to eat. Next to the shop is a public bath, adding to the nostalgic atmosphere of the Showa era that suits the shopping street well.

I went to a mochi shop for the first time in a while. Surprisingly, there is no space for customers inside the shop, so you have to choose from outside! The daifuku is delicious as expected from a mochi shop. The dango is big and comes in red bean paste, soy sauce, and sesame flavors. The sekihan was a bit hard near the beans, I wonder why? The suama may have the unique taste of a mochi shop. The bekomochi tasted better when I had it before. They seem to sell out within the day! I miss the pure way of making mochi without worrying about selling out. But in today's world, if mochi made in the morning becomes hard by evening, people would probably get upset. So, I think it's inevitable. Undoubtedly, the daifuku and dango made by mochi shops are tastier compared to those made by regular sweet shops. This mochi shop in Otaru inspired me to visit other mochi shops.
