A friend gave me a delicious souvenir from Hakodate that I really enjoyed! The packaging is retro and cute, making it a great gift for girls. "Meika Hakodateyama" is a unique and delicious confection with a blend of Japanese and Western flavors, featuring peach mountain bean paste and the aroma of rum typical of Hakodate. I'm hooked on it! Check out more details here: Hakodate's popular souvenir "Meika Hakodateyama" is a delicious confection with a mix of Japanese and Western flavors.

I got a souvenir called "Hakodateyama" at the souvenir shop in JR Hakodate Station. My husband bought a lot of sweets at the souvenir shop in Hakodate Station, Rokkatei Gyorakudo shop, Hakodate Airport, and Michi no Eki, and I tried one of them. I didn't know at all about the sweets called "Hakodateyama." So, I decided to try one. I forgot the price, but it was similar to Hiyoko Manju, Mamadoru, Poem, and Hakata Torimon, but the "Hakodateyama" had a thicker and fluffier skin that wraps the red bean paste. The shape of "Hakodateyama" was cute and it was delicious! This review is the last memory of my Hakodate trip in the summer of 2022. I was hesitant to cancel the trip due to the pandemic, but I am glad I went and returned home safely and in good health. I want to visit Hokkaido before the inbound tourists return!

Cycling to Matsukage-cho, there was a traditional Japanese sweets shop that I think was called Kuretani. I love their famous confection, Hakodateyama. The shop is simple like the sweets they sell, but I really enjoy them. The moist castella cake with yellow bean paste and a hint of Western liquor inside was created in 1958. The shop was empty with just a few sweets on display. I also saw some chestnut sweets. I bought a pack of four, and they were delicious just as they were.

I'm not sure if this is always the case, but there was only the Hakodateyama confectionery that other people have also posted about. From what I could see in the showcase, there seems to be only one other type of sweets available, which is a very unique business style in a way. It's like the epitome of focus and specialization.

I returned to Hakodate with my wife for my parents' memorial service. Just a 5-minute walk from my childhood home, near the Suginami-cho tram stop, there it was - still standing. Among the remaining shops in this area where I grew up, this shop was the only one left. The famous confectionery "Hakodate-yama" was created in the year I was born, in 1958. Feeling nostalgic about the fact that the shop still existed and Hakodate-yama was still being sold, I bought two pieces - one for myself and one for my wife. That night, back at the hotel, we tried them. The confectionery, shaped like Mount Hakodate, was a sophisticated treat with white bean paste infused with alcohol. It was truly delicious, with the same familiar taste that brought back memories. What struck me the most was that the yellow packaging from Kurenaiya and the box containing Hakodate-yama had not changed since the old days. I plan to buy some to take home with me.

Introducing a lesser-known but delicious sweet treat in the local area. Located near the Shiden Sugimachi-machi stop, quietly standing at a Y-shaped intersection, this shop may be easy to miss if you're not paying attention. The store is of average size, with a simple display case showcasing only one type of product, with varying quantities, leaving the other half of the case empty. Despite appearing almost sold out like at closing time, the shop itself is not closing and has been a well-established store for over 50 years. Known locally as "Gaugyuzan" (resembling a sleeping cow), this shop sells sweets inspired by Mount Hakodate in the shape of a confection. While it looks like a traditional Japanese sweet, it actually contains a subtly soaked sponge cake with Western liquor, paired with a surprising yellow bean paste filling that will surely surprise first-time eaters. This treat is rarely sold outside of Hakodate, with limited visibility even within the city, making it a perfect choice for a unique souvenir. Be sure to give it a try!

During my stay in Hakodate, I visited Beniya Seika to buy the popular souvenir snack "Hakodateyama". The shop is located near Suginamicho Station, just a short walk from the streetcar stop. I arrived around noon and was greeted by an elderly person upon entering the store. Besides Hakodateyama, there were various other snacks available. I purchased Hakodateyama and dorayaki for souvenirs. The dorayaki had a perfect level of sweetness in the red bean paste filling, with a firm texture that provided a satisfying bite. Since it doesn't last long, I enjoyed it in my hotel room. As for Hakodateyama, I had it after returning home. It is a wagashi shaped like Hakodate Mountain, with a yellow bean paste exterior and a castella cake infused with liquor inside. The balance between the filling and the bean paste was exquisite and to my liking. I bought a pack of 5 pieces, but I regret not buying more. Although it may seem like a common snack, the unique taste of "Hakodateyama" can only be experienced here. I will definitely buy it again when I visit or ask someone to bring it back as a souvenir.

The location of Kurenai Seika should be easy to find right in front of Sugimachi tram stop, but I never noticed it before because there is no sign, even though I have passed by in my car many times. I finally realized it after seeing the exterior photo posted by Usano Mama. I quite like their specialty sweet called "Hakodateyama", and I used to buy it as a souvenir from gift shops or kiosks, but this time was my first visit to the actual store. Shaped like Mount Hakodate, it has a firm yellow bean paste with grill marks on the outside, and inside there is a syrup-soaked castella cake instead of red bean paste. The combination of the crispy skin and moist interior is interesting, and the castella cake inside has a delicious hint of liquor flavor.

I went to Hakodate. The fourth stop following Hitotsu Kaze was Koyadani Seika. I remembered only "next to Hitotsu Kaze" during my research, so I searched for it alone after leaving Hitotsu Kaze, but even after going to 2 or 3 places, I couldn't find it (I was looking in the opposite direction), and even when I came back, I couldn't find it...??? However, there was a shop that looked like a confectionery store, so I approached it and looked inside through the glass, and I could see a showcase in the back with the name "Koyadani" written on a lantern-like object. When I went in, there it was, Hakodate Yama. When I mentioned that I couldn't find it, the staff apologized, saying, "I'm sorry, the sign has been broken for a while," with a wry smile. (laughs) When I looked back after leaving, I could see the traces of the sign. I wonder if they can't put the lantern-like object outside the store? I think it would be easier to find that way... (^_^;) Now, "Hakodate Yama" was a sweet I found out about for the first time by searching on Tabelog. Even my mother-in-law, who is a regular in Hakodate, didn't know about it. They don't sell them individually, so I bought four bags of 4 pieces each for 560 yen (tax included) each. It's a casual souvenir for neighbors. I took a photo of the receipt since they didn't give it to me. They also had Hakodate Yama in a pack of 10? and chestnut sweets. On the way to the next shop, the four of us shared two pieces. The outer layer was a firmer Momoyama dough than I had imagined, and the inside was a moist, sweet castella dough soaked with plenty of Western liquor, making it very delicious. My husband, who was driving, only ate the skin. (laughs) We enjoyed the remaining two pieces slowly when we got home. Even my husband, who could only eat the skin on the day, said it was delicious. The unit price of 140 yen (tax included) per piece may be quite high in terms of cost performance. Despite not being well-known, it is delicious and carries the name of "Hakodate," making it a very good souvenir in my opinion. (Rating points!) I happened to pass by the store, but it seems you can also buy them at department stores and souvenir shops.

When I returned home, I found a snack on the table called "Hakodateyama," which I had never seen before in my 30 years of life. Despite its impactful name, I assumed that it must not taste that great since it had never been introduced before. With low expectations, I opened the package. Inside was a snack shaped like a reclining cow, resembling Hakodateyama, which is also known as Goshizan. I took a bite and was pleasantly surprised. It was delicious! The outer layer was made of white bean paste mixed with egg yolk, while the inside was a moist castella cake soaked in liquor. The texture of the castella was amazing, and it paired perfectly with the egg yolk paste. I have become a fan and will definitely buy this as a souvenir in the future.

It's delicious. It's not very well known, and the design of the box is old-fashioned... It was first released in 1958, so maybe it's still the same as back then. Honestly, it might be off-putting at first sight. However! It's a Japanese-Western hybrid sweet that consists of castella cake soaked in liquor and wrapped in egg yolk paste, and it's delicious!! It really gives off a feeling of Hakodate. You won't encounter something like this easily elsewhere. I bought it at a store, not a souvenir shop around the station, and the elegant service from the staff made for a very pleasant time, even if just for a moment. Whenever I go to Hakodate, I always make sure to buy this one item to take back with me. Available at: Kurenai Seika, souvenir shops around the station, department stores in Hakodate, kiosks, Hakodate Airport shops, etc.

After shopping at the Marui Imai main store underground, I was walking through the underground passage when I stumbled upon a store that was bustling with activity and promoting Hokkaido's specialty products. I decided to make a purchase here. The store had a sign that read "Castella soaked in Western liquor with egg yolk paste..." As a fan of confectioneries that combine Japanese and Western flavors, I was immediately drawn to it and reached out for a box. The expiration date was relatively short, and the ingredients list contained only essential additives, which added to its appeal. The box had markings for 4 and 5 pieces, with one of them crossed out with a pen. I assumed that they didn't have boxes prepared for different quantities, which showed a clever way to save costs without ordering more boxes. This effort by a small Japanese business was admirable and made me like the product even more. The design of the box was simple and reminiscent of an old map, which I found charming. Upon opening the box, I found a sturdy plastic wrapping. The design of the box alone would have been sufficient for selling the product. The confectioneries were wrapped in traditional plastic with a paper divider. The white color and sweet brown hue of the confectionery reminded me of snow-capped mountains. As I took a bite, it slowly melted in my mouth, with the Castella cake infused with a faint aroma of Western liquor disappearing first, followed by the sweet and gentle egg yolk paste. It was a delightful experience, and my hands remained clean. The confectionery was not crumbly or messy, making it a great souvenir. It would be a perfect gift for someone special in the future. I also discovered a wonderful new confectionery, and I look forward to visiting the main store in the future.

I saw this snack at Dosanko Plaza and decided to buy it because even though my friend lived in Hakodate, they might not know about it. It's a plain snack that you might overlook, but it's surprisingly delicious. Just like satsuma imo, it may be plain, but I find it really tasty. I want to continue discovering the goodness of Hokkaido's plain snacks.

I bought this souvenir as a part of my trip back home during the New Year. It is a traditional Japanese confectionery from a shop established in 1958. I first discovered this taste when my father was transferred to another place when I was a child, and ever since then, I have been buying it as a souvenir. Local sweets are not something you eat when you live there (laughs). I had forgotten about it for a while, but I found it at the airport shop and purchased it without hesitation. This confectionery is shaped like Mount Hakodate, also known as Gagyusan, which resembles a sleeping cow. It is not like daifuku or castella, but a castella cake soaked in Western liquor and wrapped in egg yolk paste, giving it a slightly Western flavor. I bought various souvenirs, but this taste is unlike any other. It has a unique flavor that makes you want to eat more. Hokkaido is known as the kingdom of sweets, and even though this confectionery has a modest position in tourist souvenir shops, I wanted to review it as a must-try souvenir from Hakodate. If you ever visit Hakodate in Hokkaido, be sure to look for this exceptional product.

In the Hokkaido Dosanko Plaza, they also sell a dessert called Hakodateyama. I want to try it. Hakodateyama is made with a peach mountain base soaked in Western liquor, and was created in 1958 with a mix of Japanese and Western styles. It reflects the old buildings of Hakodate, so it's very representative of the city. It comes in a pack of 5, and the packaging has changed since the last time I bought it. It may look simple, but it's a dessert that you want to savor. Since the 5 pieces are all in one bag, once you open it, you feel like you have to eat them all at once, so it would be better if they were individually wrapped.

My cousin occasionally buys this as a souvenir from Hakodate, and he says it's surprisingly delicious. I used to live in Hakodate, but I had never tried it before. It seemed like a typical souvenir to me. I bought it when I visited Goryokaku Tower as a tourist. Everyone knows about Mount Hakodate, right? I think this was created to become just as popular. From the looks of it, I can imagine it's filled with white bean paste and maybe egg yolk bean paste. But I never would have guessed that it also contains castella cake soaked in Western liquor. It's quite moist and delicious. My daughter and I enjoyed it, saying it was tasty. My daughter especially liked the egg yolk bean paste and ended up choosing Momoyama from another confectionery shop. Each one is handmade, and the shape of the mountain is so charming.
