On Saturday at 1:00 PM, I went to the "Cantonese Cuisine Hong Cha" at Osaka Tenmangu Shrine. I ordered the "Sichuan Mapo Tofu Lunch (1,100 yen)" which comes with small dishes, soup, and rice. It arrived in 10 minutes. One bite and it was delicious. It had a good amount of oil, thick texture, a moment of sweetness followed by spiciness and numbness. It had plenty of minced meat and the tofu was cotton tofu. Personally, I think cotton tofu goes well with mapo tofu, so I loved it. The rice went down easily. The soup was also delicious. It was filled with chicken, enoki mushrooms, egg, carrots, cabbage, and plenty of ingredients. Most Chinese soup sets only have egg drop soup, but this one went all out on the soup too. There was also a simple and healthy glass noodle salad. They sell their homemade chili oil, doubanjiang sauce, and Sichuan pepper oil for 600 yen per 100ml. They must have a lot of confidence in them. Apart from the "Sichuan Mapo Tofu," the lunch set also includes "Five-Ingredient Fried Rice," "Tianjin Rice," and a menu called "Bak Kut Teh." I might try the "Bak Kut Teh" next time. It was a delicious meal.

Recommended points: Not just spicy, the mapo tofu is spicy, hot, and flavorful. By the end of the meal, you'll be sweating. The soup is exquisite. It's so delicious, you wonder if they make it with bak kut teh. Mayo vermicelli? A nice break from the spiciness when it's too hot. The problem of gulping down cold tea. Can't decide between bak kut teh lunch, tantanmen lunch, or fried rice lunch, it's a dilemma that can last for an hour.

The restaurant is a bit off the main shopping street but still very popular. We had to wait for about 5 minutes as it was full. It was hot while waiting. They took our order while we were waiting, but it took almost 15 minutes from seating to getting our food. I was happy to have some cold jasmine tea.
I ordered the five-ingredient fried rice set with small side dishes and soup. The fried rice had plenty of ingredients like shrimp, char siu, leeks, and egg. It was delicious! The soup also had a lot of ingredients like Chinese cabbage, egg, and shredded chicken. It had a slightly thick texture and a good flavor without any overpowering taste. It was a bit salty but still tasty! Next time, I'll come back to try the Bak Kut Teh when it gets colder. Thank you for the meal!

I use this restaurant for lunch every time. I know that this place is known for delicious mapo tofu and bak kut teh, but this year, due to the intense heat, I was feeling a bit of summer fatigue and didn't have much of an appetite, so I was unsure of what to order. However, I was told that they have a limited quantity of chilled tantan noodles available during the summer. I was hesitant because often warm noodles don't taste as good when served cold, but I decided to give it a try and it was delicious! The cold soup with a spicy kick increased my appetite, and it became my new favorite. It also comes with rice, so it's recommended for men who want a hearty meal, and for women who prefer just the noodles, the staff will ask if you want rice or not, making it easy to choose. Thank you for the meal. I will visit again.

Located right near Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, this little-known Chinese restaurant is a hidden gem. Despite being relatively unknown, it's packed with locals, especially during lunchtime. Their speciality is the Five-Ingredient Fried Rice, which is perfectly cooked with a great mix of flavors and ingredients. The Mapo Tofu and Cold Tan Tan Noodles are also delicious.

I went for lunch for the first time! For 1200 yen, you get soup, side dishes, rice (with free refills), and mapo tofu. The portion of mapo tofu was quite generous, and the spiciness was excellent! The perfect balance of sweetness and spiciness was just to my liking. Since the mapo tofu portion was generous, I couldn't get a rice refill and had to give up. Next time, I plan to challenge the bakuteh.

I discovered this restaurant in the early morning while browsing through a magazine, and I couldn't resist visiting it. I ordered the mapo tofu lunch. As soon as I took a bite, the spiciness and numbness hit me hard. I'm not very good with spicy food, so I tried to balance it out with rice and ate as much tofu as I could. However, the base seasoning, the texture of the minced meat, and the side dish and soup were all very delicious and satisfying. When I asked if the spiciness could be adjusted, I was told it couldn't be done during lunchtime, but I would eventually get used to it. Indeed, by the time I finished paying and left the restaurant, I was left with a pleasant aftertaste.

Lunch in Minamimori-cho. I went to Bencha for the first time in a few years. It was full right after opening, with many regular customers from the neighborhood. I ordered the Sichuan-style mapo tofu lunch. The owner of this restaurant also trained with Chinese cuisine oil, just like at Chilirengue in Tatsuimachi. This mapo tofu is a type with a thick texture compared to oil. You can see a lot of doubanjiang in it. The soft salty and flavorful taste of doubanjiang, along with the gradually increasing spiciness and numbness, makes the rice go down easily. It's common for oil-based dishes to come with a spring roll salad set, but the soup here is a thick egg soup with chicken pieces melted in it. Thank you for the meal.

Today's solo lunch was at a restaurant near Osaka Tenmangu Shrine called "Cantonese Cuisine Hong Cha." It's pronounced as "honcha." The chef trained at a famous restaurant known for Mapo Tofu called "Chinese Cuisine Oil." Being a fan of Oil, I decided to visit this place for lunch. I arrived around 11:45 am and the restaurant was about 90% full. I sat at a table for two, but since I was dining alone, sharing the table was not an issue. I ordered the Sichuan Mapo Tofu Lunch Set for ¥1100, which included Mapo Tofu, a salad with glass noodles and vegetables in mayonnaise, a hearty soup with lots of ingredients, and rice (refills were allowed). The restaurant quickly filled up after I arrived, with a few customers waiting outside. The kitchen seemed to be run by a male, likely the owner, while the friendly female staff handled the service. The Sichuan Mapo Tofu was less oily and less spicy compared to Oil's version, making it suitable for those who are not fond of spicy food. The dish focused more on flavor than spiciness, with generous portions that almost required a second bowl of rice. The soup was packed with chicken, vegetables, and eggs, and the light and tasty salad complemented the meal well. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal and appreciated the staff, the restaurant, the food, and especially the Mapo Tofu. Thank you for the wonderful meal!

Visit date and time: 12:30 on a weekday
Wait time: 5 minutes
Menu: Mapo tofu set meal for 1,100 yen
I also visited during Golden Week, but the shop was closed, so I came back again. When I arrived, the shop was full and there was one person waiting outside. I ordered the famous mapo tofu as soon as I entered. About 90% of the people around me were also eating mapo tofu. It was brought to me after a while. The mapo tofu was numbingly spicy and delicious. I personally love the numbing sensation more than the spiciness, so I really enjoyed the taste. I got a refill of rice and left feeling full. I recommend the mapo tofu for those who like the numbing sensation, so please try it out. Thank you for the meal.

The chef at a Chinese restaurant near Osaka Tenmangu Shrine is from "Chuka-sai Oil". The "Sichuan Mapo Tofu Lunch" is 1,100 yen. The visual and aroma make it already delicious, with a good thickness and a nice oily texture. Just when you start to feel the sweetness, the spiciness kicks in, followed by a tingling sensation that leaves a refreshing aftertaste. The tofu has a strong presence, and the minced meat is full of umami. You must have a second helping of rice. It's relatively mild and easy to eat, but may be lacking for those who love extremely spicy food. The small dish is a common glass noodle salad, but the soup has plenty of ingredients and is satisfying. No doubt about it! Instagram→ @masayan.310

I enjoy visiting famous Chinese restaurants for Mapo Tofu, and this time I visited Cantonese Cuisine Hong Cha located next to Tenmangu Shrine. As it was my second stop, I ordered Stir-fried Pork with Spring Cabbage and Mapo Tofu. The Mapo Tofu had a thick and mild sauce with a hint of Sichuan pepper, very delicious! However, the Stir-fried Pork was too salty and intense, I made a mistake in ordering the right balance. Lesson learned for next time! - tk-2

Near Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, there is a Chinese restaurant with a cafe-like exterior. The menu is carefully selected. Hong Kong-style char siu, thickly sliced and full of flavor. Cantonese-style spring rolls, crispy and fragrant. When you break the skin, a hot aroma and shrimp burst out. Shrimp in chili sauce, with a fantastic aroma. Sichuan-style mapo tofu, rich and flavorful with a numbing sensation. The spicy and delicious mapo tofu is a must-try. Five-flavor fried rice, light and fluffy. The ingredients have a satisfying crunch. It was a very satisfying visit.

Near the southeast of Osaka Tenmangu Shrine is "Hontei," a popular restaurant run by a chef from Fukushima. I arrived at 11:40 and the restaurant was already 70% full, with a full house by noon. They offer a lunch set of Five-Ingredient Fried Rice for 1100 yen, which comes with jasmine tea. The fried rice was generously filled with ingredients, such as shrimp and char siu, and had a slightly moist texture. The highlight was the soup, which was rich and flavorful, with tender pork meat that seemed similar to Bak Kut Teh. The spring roll salad was a refreshing side dish. Overall, a great dining experience. Please consider saving this review if you're interested in trying out this restaurant. Payment is cash only.

[Visit] Located a 3-minute walk from the easy-to-find JR Tozai Line Osaka Temmangu Station
[Queue] Arrived a little before 12:25 on a weekday, waited for 1 person
[Order] Verbally ordered the Sichuan-style Mapo Tofu Set for ¥1,100 (includes small dishes, soup, and rice) and the Five-Ingredient Fried Rice for ¥1,100 (served with Mapo Tofu)
The Mapo Tofu is made with soft tofu, plenty of minced meat, finely chopped green onions, and has a thick and oily texture with a spicy kick from Sichuan pepper and a rich flavor from the minced meat. Goes well with rice. The fried rice is light and fluffy with shrimp, green onions, egg, and char siu, highly recommended. The small dishes include a mayo salad with glass noodles, lettuce, carrots, and cucumbers. The soup is a hearty chicken and vegetable soup with plenty of ingredients and a gentle saltiness.
[Interior] 16 seats in total, including 4 counter seats and 12 table seats

Inheriting the DNA of a famous restaurant that fills up right after opening, this Sichuan cuisine spot, Hongcha, is located a 7-minute walk from Minami-morimachi Station or a 5-minute walk from Osaka Tenmangu Station. The lunch budget is around 1100 to 1200 yen, and if you arrive before opening, there is usually no wait. The chef comes from a renowned restaurant, which piqued my interest. The color of the Ma Po Tofu didn't appeal to me in the photos, but upon visiting, I found the dish to be quite flavorful. The Ma Po Tofu had a brownish color, a thick and sticky texture, and a good balance of savory bean paste flavor and spiciness. It starts off mild but gradually builds up heat, leaving a pleasant warmth. The dish is not too oily, and the level of spiciness is moderate, making it enjoyable for a wide range of people. Although I prefer a bit more kick, I still found it delicious. The rice is refillable, and the generous meat in the egg soup is also tasty. If I can choose a spicier option next time, I would go for the Ma Po Tofu again, if not, I would like to try the XO Dandan noodles.

I was seated at a shared table, but the partition made it not a big deal. I enjoyed a cold jasmine tea. I had the Sichuan-style mapo tofu lunch for 1100 yen. The tofu was soft and the dish had a lot of spicy chili oil, but it was rich in flavor. The five-ingredient fried rice lunch for 1100 yen had some parts where the rice was not fully fried, but it had a generous amount of shrimp and meat as toppings. The soup was flavorful with plenty of ingredients. The mayonnaise glass noodle salad was also delicious.

Near Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, there is a street lined with good restaurants, and I recently had a delicious lunch at Cantonese Cuisine Red Tea. I ordered the 4500 yen course, which included luxurious appetizers like char siu, drooling chicken, stir-fried nuts, and shrimp mayo. I was surprised by the generous portion. I enjoyed dishes like oyster tempura, a gentle soup, and fried abalone, followed by spicy mapo tofu with steamed rice. The food was not greasy, well-prepared, and flavorful, with satisfying portion sizes. I wonder what the 6000 yen course includes. I was completely satisfied.

This time, I had Bak Kut Teh. The tender meat was full of flavor, and the soup was so good that I could eat multiple bowls of rice with it. Just like their Mapo Tofu, this is a place I want to go to on a day when I want to eat a lot of rice. The restaurant is quietly located near Osaka Tenmangu Shrine, and there is always a small line during lunchtime. However, the turnover is quick, so you are seated relatively quickly. The staff are cheerful. The chef is constantly focused on the frying pan. The classic Mapo Tofu is not too spicy, with a rich flavor, and very delicious. Of course, I had seconds of rice haha. Actually, the soup and side dishes are also delicious, and just these alone make the rice go down smoothly. When I'm hungry, I remember this taste.

I arrived at the restaurant just before 11:30 when it opened, and was the first customer. The interior was clean and welcoming. I ordered the Sichuan mapo tofu lunch set for 1,100 yen, which came with side dishes, soup, and rice. The side dishes included glass noodles, lettuce, carrots, and cucumber with mayonnaise salad. The soup was filled with chicken, Chinese cabbage, enoki mushrooms, carrots, and egg, with a gentle flavor. The spiciness from the Sichuan pepper and the umami from the minced meat spread in my mouth, making it delicious and easy to eat with rice. The fact that the chaser was jasmine tea was also a nice service touch.
