I arrived in Wakkanai on a trip with the Seishun 18 ticket. I had made a reservation at the Ikoi Ryokan, located about an 8-minute walk from Wakkanai Station. The ryokan cost 5150 yen per night, including breakfast. The name Ikoi is read as "ikoi." There is a bowling alley across the street, and you can park about 3 cars in front of the ryokan. You take off your shoes at the entrance and go inside. The elderly owners greeted me. I settled the payment, went up the stairs to the second floor to my room. I stayed in a 6-tatami mat Japanese-style room, with a unit bathroom next to the entrance. There was also a bath on the first floor where 2 people could bathe, so I used that. The room had a dressing table and a low table, giving it a nostalgic ryokan atmosphere. There was no air conditioning, but a kerosene fan heater warmed the room. That evening, I had dinner at a nearby diner and was able to relax and rest. The next morning, I had breakfast at 6 am because of the ferry schedule. The breakfast included grilled hokke fish, boiled octopus, herring rolled in kelp, shrimp, scallops and vegetable stew, sujiko, datemaki, kamaboko, grated yam, ginkgo nut miso soup, rice, and pickles. It was a hearty breakfast. I had to catch the Heartland Ferry to Rishiri departing at 6:55 am from Wakkanai Port, so I hurried. The grilled hokke and boiled octopus were delicious. I especially liked the ginkgo nut miso soup, with its crunchy texture, a winter delicacy in Wakkanai. The next day, I returned to Wakkanai, and the ryokan kindly kept my bag for me. The owner drove me to Wakkanai Port in a wagon. The personalized service at this small ryokan was friendly and flexible. They even provided me with a cardboard box, tape, and string for sending my luggage by courier. Thank you for everything.
