When you think of Hakodate, do you think of squid? Salt ramen? No, it seems that the soul food of Hakodate people is the yakitori bento from Hasesto. "Really?" I asked, and was told, "Maybe only a few locals." However, there is no doubt that it is the soul food of Hakodate. I decided to try it out. The first time I visited, I didn't know how to order the yakitori bento, so I ended up buying a pre-made bento and was teased by the locals. It turns out you have to order the yakitori to be grilled. This time, I made sure to order the yakitori bento properly. There is a counter with a grill in the center of the shop. You fill out an order form and place your order there. First, you choose the size: mini, small, medium, large, jumbo. I chose large (730 yen). Then you choose the flavor: tare, salt, salt tare, umakara, miso tare. I chose salt. I wrote my choices on the order form and handed it in, then waited inside the shop. Hasegawa Store is a convenience store with a variety of takeout options. Oh? This format is similar to Seicomart, which is popular in Hokkaido. There seems to be a connection with Hasesto, as Seicomart drinks were available there. I bought a bottle of oolong tea. After about 10 minutes, my order was ready. I paid for my drink and bento at the register and ate in. The yakitori bento turned out to be pork skewers. It had a simple taste, but it was definitely addictive. The combination of seaweed, yakitori, and rice on top of each other was harmonious and delicious. The large size was enough to fill me up. I might end up coming back for more. Thank you for the meal.
