Let's buy some "Kamae" kamaboko for the people who have taken care of us♪ "Kamae" is a well-known 1,904-year-old established kamaboko shop based in Otaru, Hokkaido. The main factory direct store is a popular shop that is also part of the tourist route. My recommendation is the "Hirate" for 226 yen and "Cheese Chikuwa" for 183 yen. The "Hirate" is likely the most popular item, with a slightly sweet and soft texture. It's delicious as is or grilled. Another popular item from "Kamae" is the "Pan Roll," which is surimi wrapped in bread and deep-fried, offering a snack-like experience. Although similar products from other companies have been circulating recently, "Kamae" has issued a warning on their website about these imitations. Personally, I find the bread in the "Pan Roll" too greasy, so I opted for the safe choice of "Cheese Chikuwa." I'll definitely be back to buy some for myself next time♪

On the first day of a two-day trip to Sapporo, I decided to have a relaxing evening in my hotel room instead of going out. I bought some food and alcohol near the station at Daimaru, where I visited a traditional Otaru fish cake shop that has been around since 1895. I bought their famous "pan roll" and "kinpira" fish cakes, which were still warm and delicious. The fish cakes were a perfect snack with my highball drink back at the hotel. I always make sure to buy these fish cakes whenever I visit Sapporo, as they are a must-have for me. It's strange that this shop doesn't participate in Hokkaido food fairs in the Tokyo area, as I believe they would be very popular. I hope to see them at these events in the future.

When I go to "Sapporo Daimaru", I always stop by "Kamaei" - a branch of a long-established kamaboko (fish cake) shop originating from Otaru.
"Hirate" - 216 yen, the most popular item! It's a simple kamaboko with a slightly sweet taste and no fillings. I bought it last October for 194 yen, but it seems they've raised the price a bit.
"Na no Hana Age" - 226 yen, this month's kamaboko. Since it's made with the mild-flavored rapeseed blossoms, it doesn't really taste like rapeseed blossoms. By the way, next month's kamaboko will be "Takenoko Age" with a crunchy texture.
Tonight, I'll have a drink with some kamaboko!

The kamaboko from "Kamae" is considered the soul food of the residents of Otaru. This longstanding store has been around for almost 120 years! It's great news for fans like me living in Sapporo because you can also buy it at department stores in Sapporo and at New Chitose Airport. Today, I'll buy some for myself at Sapporo Daimaru store!
"Hirate" for 194 yen is the most popular item! It's a simple kamaboko with a slightly sweet taste and no fillings.
"Cheese Curry Wrap" for 226 yen is a store-exclusive or seasonal item, I think? It's kamaboko with beaten egg, bacon, cheese, and onions mixed in surimi, wrapped in thin bread and fried like a "pandome" with added curry flavor!
I'll enjoy these two items tonight with some drinks when I get home!
Kamae's popular product, the "pan roll," where surimi is wrapped in bread and fried, was introduced in 1962. It was created with the idea of being able to enjoy kamaboko as a snack. Isn't it amazing to think that this concept was developed almost 60 years ago? I believe that Kamae has remained popular for so long because of their ability to develop products that are relevant to the times!

Dinner and side dishes for the next day~ I went to Daimaru again near Sapporo Station for some shopping. The food section at Daimaru is really convenient when you have this kind of errand to run. I bought a bread roll (¥216), kimpira (¥172), and shrimp and broccoli dish (¥216) for dinner and the next day's meals. I also bought a few other delicious items, but I forgot to take pictures of them this time. Here are some reviews of the items I bought:
- Bread Roll: This is a popular item among fans of Kamaboko (fish cake). It's a unique product where fish cake is wrapped in bread, creating a new and delicious combination. The texture is soft but has a good bite to it, making it very satisfying to eat.
- Shrimp and Broccoli Dish: This was a new item for me, and it seems to be a limited-time offering. The dish contains small pieces of shrimp and broccoli mixed together, with a good balance of flavors and textures. The shrimp pieces are larger and have a nice crunch to them. It's a boat-shaped dish, flatter than the bread roll.
- Kimpira: This dish is packed with kimpira (a traditional Japanese dish made with root vegetables) and has a good density without overwhelming the fish cake. The flavor is not too sweet or salty, allowing the taste of the fish cake to shine through.
Overall, I also tried other items like miso-nanban (fried fish in miso sauce) and round tempura, which were all delicious. Thank you for the meal!

A little while ago...--------------------------------------Due to the state of emergency declared for the new coronavirus, I hadn't been to the department store at all. But today, I had to go to Sapporo Station for some errands, so I thought I'd take a look at the food section of Daimaru Department Store while I was there. Oh! Sapporo Station was about 1/10 or 1/20 as crowded as usual. The entrance to the Daimaru Department Store's food section was only from the front, and the back entrance was closed. There was a thermography device to measure body temperature at the entrance. The crowd inside the store was about 20% of normal, and the amount of products displayed was also less. For my evening drink snack, I bought fried fish cakes from "Kamaei" shop. Kamaei is a famous fish cake shop in Otaru, a bit expensive but delicious. I bought my favorite Pan Roll for 216 yen and Asparagus Bacon Fry for 226 yen. I love the fried fish cake called Pan Roll here. Although my wife's sloppy cutting and serving (-_-;), I didn't say anything because I don't want to know what would happen if I complained. I just wish they would serve it more beautifully (laughs). As always, the fish cakes were delicious! Thank you for the meal. I'll visit another store next time.

It had been a while since I last visited Kamiei for a meal, but I suddenly felt like having a bread roll, so I stopped by while running errands. The bread roll was just as delicious as I remembered! It seemed like the price had gone up by about 50 yen since the last time I had it though. I prefer to eat it warm as it enhances the texture. There were hardly any customers inside the Daimaru store, which made the atmosphere a bit awkward. It might be better to decide what to buy beforehand in such times. It's important to take minimal necessary actions in the current situation.

≼January 18, 2020 First Visit≽I visited Daimaru to buy some souvenirs. Although my main purpose was not Kamaei, I ended up buying various items that I saw at Daimaru. There were some limited edition items available only at that store, and also some items that I realized I had forgotten to buy before. I can't remember the name of the items because it was only written as "deli products" on the receipt. Sorry about that (/ω\). What impressed me here was that they asked if I wanted the items wrapped in wrapping paper when making a purchase. Even though I didn't need it for home use, it was very thoughtful considering the possibility of carrying it on a plane. I also realized that having items wrapped adds a touch of luxury when giving them as gifts. This service was not available at Tokyu, so I was impressed by Daimaru's attention to detail. The customer service was excellent as well! And of course, the fried fish cake was delicious. It's fun to see the differences between stores, so I definitely want to visit this one again in the future ( *´艸`)

Today, I visited the food section at Sapporo Mitsukoshi where Kamaei-san has a stall. It was bustling with Christmas cakes and chicken dishes. I bought some kamaboko from my favorite shop there. I purchased kamaboko like tenkabu, which I think will last until I return to Tokyo. I carried it in a cooler bag with ice packs while traveling, so there were no issues. I enjoyed it at home at the end of the year, and it was delicious with a good texture. I wonder if I can buy Kamaei-san's kamaboko in Tokyo.

Whenever I go, it's always crowded. In that small space, there are many staff members, and despite having a set menu, the checkout process is smooth! The staff are incredibly fast at the register. The speed of packaging varies depending on the staff member, but they are all efficient! My favorite is the black beans.

In Hokkaido, satsuma age is called "tempura kamaboko." It is a popular dish at Kamaei, a long-established shop with its main store in Otaru and a branch in Sapporo Daimaru. Today, I ate so much that I feel like my stomach is going to burst, so I don't need dinner... I thought I could just have a little snack, so I went to Kamaei. It's perfect as a side dish with alcohol. Although I'm currently refraining from alcohol (due to an injury), I can still enjoy it without drinking. The most popular dish is the classic "hira ten," followed by the second popular dish "kinpira" with burdock and carrots, and the spicy "nanban miso." The kamaboko is slightly sweet with a moderate elasticity, and it's really delicious. The nanban miso is not too spicy, so even children can enjoy it. You can eat it as is, or sear it slightly for a charred flavor. I personally enjoy it without any additional seasoning, but my family likes to eat it with soy sauce. While my family members enjoy it with a chu-hi in hand, I had a non-alcoholic chu-hi and enjoyed my meal as well. Thank you for the delicious food.

Delicious~ especially the bread rolls. They have kamaboko inside the white bread. I crave them occasionally. They seem high in calories but aren't they better than fried food? It's fish. It's white. I always use Sandwich Man Datte-chan's zero-calorie theory as an excuse to buy them. It's like buying bread from a bakery in terms of price range. Even for someone like me who eats a lot, three pieces are enough. They are almost always good even when cold. I will continue to buy them regularly. 🍞

"Kamaei" 8th store
"Kamaei" started from our home's easy series. Since we have a connection to Otaru, we wanted to visit various shops.
"Kamaei Marui Imai Sapporo Store"
"Kamaei Mitsukoshi Sapporo Store"
"Kamaei Sapporo Esta Store"
"Kamaei Sapporo Tokyu Store"
"Kamaei Sanport Store"
"Kamaei Shin Sapporo Sampiazza Store"
"Kamaei Hanazono Store"
I tried the popular three types: "Pan Roll" for 216 yen, "Tofu Kenchin" for 183 yen, and "Miso Nanban" for 172 yen.
"Pan Roll" is a hit product from Kamaei.
"Tofu Kenchin" is the usual side dish.
"Miso Nanban" is a bit spicy.
The "Daimaru Store" was open due to the weekday operation of the Sapporo Daimaru store's basement food section. It was a reassuring side dish for staying at home.

I came to Daimaru and went exploring to see if there was anything good to eat. I felt like having it after a long time, so I decided to buy it. Everything I eat here is delicious. There are so many options to choose from that it's hard to decide. This time, I bought the "Mayo Sandwich," "Hira-Ten," and two "Cheese Chikuwa." When I got home, I immediately tried them! I personally love the Cheese Chikuwa. I always end up buying it. If you like cheese, it's a good choice. Hira-Ten is a popular item here. I always buy it too. It's delicious! I bought the Mayo Sandwich for the first time. It was also delicious! I only wrote that it was delicious in my review (lol). It's not very helpful, I know. I definitely want to go back and buy more. Thank you for the meal٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶

I visited "Kamaei Sapporo Daimaru Store" on this day. The Depachika was crowded with people, it was past 4 pm in the evening. As expected, there was a long line at this famous Otaru shop. Last time I came, I gave up on queuing because of the long line, but this time I had some extra time so I decided to join the line. After a few minutes of waiting, I ordered the "Pan Roll". I was happy to earn Rakuten points by buying it at Daimaru. I didn't eat the Pan Roll on that day, I ate it at home the next day. The Pan Roll from Kamaei was delicious! I have tried Pan Rolls from other places before and they were good too, but this one is completely different! The quality of the ingredients is on another level. I might not have a chance to eat other Pan Rolls anymore...

A must-buy shop when visiting Otaru. It's really exciting to be able to buy in Sapporo. The pan rolls are delicious, with a filling of white meat, pork, and onions rolled in bread and deep-fried. Lately, I always bring a cooler bag when I go to the store. The hira-ten, fluffy onion tempura, and shrimp tempura are all delicious, with a subtle sweetness from the fried white meat. The umami flavor makes you want to keep chewing. There are no bad choices, which is fantastic.
