I waited for the restaurant to open on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. There were no other customers before me, but 4 customers arrived within 30 minutes. The restaurant shares a parking lot with the neighboring business supermarket, which can accommodate around 40 cars. There is a vending machine outside where you can easily purchase items like fried chicken, but nothing beats freshly fried and hot food. I ordered the chicken soba set (850 yen). As the weather was getting colder, warm soba was very much appreciated. The set included two pieces of zangi (fried chicken), pickled radish, two rice balls, and chicken soba. The soba toppings included shiitake mushrooms, chicken, and green onions. The zangi was large and satisfying to eat. I finished the soba broth completely. It was a delicious meal.

Today is the 15th, which means it's Zangi's special sale day. I was in Wakkanai, but I ordered from Narutoya in Otaru and waited for about 10 minutes for it to be fried. When I brought it back to eat, it had a strong smell. The meat was a bit tough, but the coating was crispy and delicious. The seasoning on the coating is really good. Zangi is like that. Since it was the 15th, I got a 100 yen discount, which was a good deal. The locals were also excited about the special sale day, but unfortunately, the ferry was canceled. Zangi's seasoning is personally my favorite.

On the last day in Wakkanai, I found a restaurant called "Otaru Narutoya" which had been featured on a TV show before, so I decided to try it out for lunch. The atmosphere seemed to be more focused on takeout, with a small counter seating about 12 people. It felt like a bento shop where you can also eat in. The service was pay first and then they bring the food to you style, and you have to get your own water. The half-fried young chicken set meal for 1250 yen had a perfect amount of salt and tasted delicious. However, the portion was too big and it was difficult to finish. I also ordered the Zangi curry, which was also delicious. Overall, the half-fried young chicken and Zangi were the standout dishes. It was a great meal!

I had a takeout of Zangi don, bonjiri-age, and neck-age. The Zangi don had a slightly strong flavor but was delicious. I thought the neck-age would be boneless when I bought it, but it turned out to have bones in it. (-_-;)

Once you get to Wakkanai, there are restaurants there too. I regretted not buying curry in Asahikawa before, so this time I decided to get curry and zangi for takeout. The restaurant operates on a ticket system. The freshly fried zangi looked so delicious that I couldn't resist having a bite on the spot. It was crispy on the outside and very juicy on the inside. Zangi is definitely best when it's freshly fried. I warmed up the curry at home and tried it. Of course, I topped it with zangi, so it's a self-zangi curry. The curry was rich and had a bit of a minced meat curry flavor. It wasn't very spicy, so I added some habanero pepper for heat. The curry was okay, but the zangi was really delicious. Half-fried zangi is the best at Narutoya.

I finally got to visit Narutoya, a place I've always wanted to try. I usually take the Shin Nihonkai Ferry to Hokkaido, so I always arrive in Otaru at night. I couldn't believe Narutoya was here. I tried the "Wakadori Teishoku" for 1,200 yen, which comes with half a fried chicken. It was a generous portion and very delicious! The only downside was that it was a bit difficult to eat. Next time, I'll try the Zangi Teishoku.

I had half-fried young chicken (takeout) and chicken gyoza curry at "Otaru Narutoya Wakkanai Store" in Chuo 5-chome, Wakkanai City. The half-fried young chicken is great as a beer snack. The store also offers other menu items such as chicken curry gyoza. The store has a counter seating with 6 seats on the left and 5 seats on the right. The menu includes dishes like young chicken set meal, zangi set meal, hamburger set meal, curry rice, zangi bowl, chicken somen set, and chilled somen set. They have special discounts on the 15th and 30th of each month. Enjoyed the traditional half-fried young chicken from Otaru Narutoya. Wakkanai Store is a branch of the main store in Otaru. Zangi-don for 770 yen and chicken dumplings for 370 yen. Next to a wholesale supermarket is Wakkanai City's Torimaruage, a branch of Otaru. You can eat in the store or take out. The interior is clean, and you buy a meal ticket and wait. After a short wait, the zangi and dumplings arrived. The zangi had a crispy coating and was delicious with the sweet and savory sauce, although the meat was a bit dry. The dumplings had a smooth skin and a juicy filling that was tasty. Maybe there's pepper in the sauce!? The curry also looked delicious, so I'll definitely be visiting again!!

During the lunch break of a tour in northern Hokkaido, I found a restaurant called "Naruto-ya" along the national highway in Wakkanai. Instead of waiting to eat in Otaru, I couldn't resist and decided to stop by. I ordered the "Zangi Curry" using a food ticket. It took about 10 minutes for the food to be ready, which was nice to know they didn't pre-make it. I thought "zangi" would be chunks, but it turned out to be well-sliced pieces of fried chicken on top of the curry. It was easy to eat, but I wondered about the portion size. The curry was made with chicken and had a good flavor of onions, making it delicious. Both the curry and zangi were tasty, but they both had a salty taste, so when eaten together, the balance was off. It's best to enjoy Naruto-ya's zangi on its own and curry on its own. Overall, it was a delicious meal. Thank you.

It was evening time, and I didn't feel like preparing dinner at home, so I decided to try this place that I had been curious about for a while. I was surprised to find out that they had a dining area inside the store (I thought it was only for takeout). I hadn't had fried chicken since KFC closed down, but the fried half chicken here is absolutely delicious!
