Shiraoi Town Tora-ashihama is an area with high-quality hot springs, featuring old yet charming hot spring inns and day-use hot spring facilities. Tora-ashihama Onsen Hotel, although the main building has been renovated, still offers a 25m heated pool and a large hall that has remained unchanged since the Showa era. For me, it holds memories of over 35 years ago when my grandparents often took me for day trips there. My sister, cousins, and I would play in the heated pool, warm up in the hot springs, then enjoy coffee milk and play arcade games in the game corner. It was bustling back then, with adults eating soba, enjoying Japanese traditional dance and enka performances on stage. It may have faded and quieted down a bit now, but it remains just like it was back then, which made me happy. The hot springs remain the same, too. The hot spring water at Tora-ashihama is clear and transparent, with a gentle viscosity that clings to the skin. While I prefer the more opaque and forceful hot spring water like at Noboribetsu Onsen, I find the hot spring water at Tora-ashihama equally appealing, especially when I want to relax on a leisurely holiday. The facility has several types of baths, including outdoor baths, with varying water qualities such as clear high-temperature water and brownish lukewarm water. Personally, I prefer the clear high-temperature water with strong viscosity, as it embodies the essence of Tora-ashihama. However, since guests using the pool also move around in swimwear (not allowed in the baths), the atmosphere may be slightly less traditional, but the retro-chic vibe is a charming aspect that is hard to let go of. After bathing, enjoy a "Large Hall Beer," a Super Dry beer with a sharp, dry taste that reduces malt content and increases adjuncts (rice, corn starch) for a refreshing flavor! It's the perfect drink to quench your dry throat and body after a bath, injecting moisture and a sense of happiness into your being. The day-use bathing fee is 600 yen. Please note that the "lunch" service previously available in the main building during my visit seems to have been discontinued.
