Funakoshiya is a shop located in front of Kitahiroshima Station. I had been curious about it for a while and even peeked inside from outside. The customers seemed to be mostly middle-aged and older, so I was hesitant to go in. But I decided to take the plunge and went inside, and indeed, there were mostly middle-aged and older customers. There were three sunken kotatsu tables, all occupied by regulars or reserved, so I sat at the counter. I ordered a draft beer, and to my surprise, the beer dispenser was high-tech! It was delicious and refreshing, especially on a hot day. The shop owner and regular customers were getting excited watching sumo wrestling on TV. Looking at the menu, the owner suggested the "nishin nanbanzuke" would be ready quickly. So, I ordered that along with the "hamaboofu tempura," which is a specialty made with mountain vegetables from Koyashimizu Town. The nishin nanbanzuke arrived quickly and was delicious with a gentle acidity. The shop mainly serves seafood dishes like sashimi, tempura, fried fish, grilled fish, and simmered fish, perfect for pairing with drinks. I also ordered smoked mackerel, smoked saury, grilled "tokishirazu" fish, fried oysters, homemade satsuma-age, maguro red meat, and grilled bamboo shoots. The fried oysters were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, incredibly delicious. The hamaboofu tempura had a nice bitterness to it and was also very tasty. The "tokishirazu" fish was tender and flavorful, a real seasonal treat. We enjoyed beer, sour, sake (Mansaku no Hana), and highball. We even received a glass of sake as a gift from the couple next to us. With delicious food and a fun atmosphere, the drinks flowed a bit too much, and I ended up losing track towards the end. The bill came out to just under 12,000 yen for two people. The dishes were all made with seasonal ingredients and were reasonably priced. I think the real culprit was drinking too much. Another favorite restaurant added to my list! Thank you for the meal!
