≼First Visit on January 18, 2020≽ I visited Hanazono-ten in Otaru, and was advised to get their products from a department store in Tokyo if I wanted to take them back home. I immediately went to the store and found out that they have coin lockers available for 100 yen, and if you make a purchase, they will refund the locker fee. They even have refrigerated lockers to store your purchased items. I asked for recommendations and purchased the following items:
- Bread Roll 200 yen
- Mayonnaise Sandwich 200 yen
- Fried Fish Cake 180 yen
- Shrimp Tempura 200 yen
- Kinpira (Burdock Root Stir Fry) 160 yen
- Miso Nanban (Deep-fried fish in miso sauce) 160 yen
- Creamy Cheese Tempura 160 yen
I enjoyed the items the same day I got back home. The Bread Roll and Mayonnaise Sandwich were delicious. The most popular item, Fried Fish Cake, was also very tasty and substantial. Each item had a unique flavor profile. Personally, I loved the Creamy Cheese Tempura which melted in my mouth. When heated, the fried fish cake was also excellent. I will definitely purchase these again when I visit Sapporo!

2019/12 First visit to "Kamaei" 4th store
We started with the "Kamaei" store as part of our home cooking series. Since we have a connection to Otaru, we wanted to visit various shops.
"Kamaei Marui Imai Sapporo Store"
"Kamaei Mitsukoshi Sapporo Store"
"Kamaei Sapporo Esta Store"
At the Tokyu Sapporo store, there didn't seem to be any "limited edition" items, but they do have "seasonal products" that they sell every month, although they were already sold out for December. It seemed like the seasonal product for December was "ginger tempura."
"Tofu Kenchin" 183 yen
I couldn't help but buy the "Tofu Kenchin," which is just right as a side dish for alcohol. It's fluffy like tofu, a collaboration of fish cake and tofu. It's a perfect match for alcohol. "Kamaei" really does go well with sake.

Each piece was large and had a satisfying crunch. Some were freshly fried and remained warm for a while. What stood out was the inclusion of black beans. They were sweet and big. The thick kinpira was also delicious, and the most popular item, the tempura, was amazing. It was fluffy and addictive.

Due to a virus causing my computer to malfunction, the migration process to a new desktop computer has been completed. It took me a while to transfer everything due to it being my first time using Windows 10 and also because of my health condition. I am now back to liking and commenting on posts. Thank you for your understanding.
Kamae is a long-established kamaboko (fish cake) specialty store with its main store located in Otaru. Founded in 1914, this year marks its 109th anniversary. The factory in Otaru is popular among tourists. They have outlets in all department stores in Sapporo. "Kamae Tokyu Sapporo Store" is a kamaboko specialty store located in the Tokyu Food Show in the basement of Tokyu Department Store in Sapporo. They recently sold a cute limited-time "Nyan Kama" product. Although it wasn't the first thing in the morning, I was able to get it successfully.
■ Limited-time offer, limited quantity Nyan Kama January 31 - February 5, 2019 Limited to 50 pieces A deep-fried kamaboko with a rich cheese flavor base and boiled egg inside. Price: 1 piece for 222 yen (tax included) The limited-time and limited-quantity "Nyan Kama" is a very cute deep-fried kamaboko. The taste is reliable as it is from "Kamae". It is a deep-fried kamaboko that you can enjoy by looking at it and eating it. It's so cute that it almost feels like a waste to eat it (laughs). Next time, I might go for my favorite "Hirate". Thank you for the delicious meal.

In Sapporo, there were two of us. Lately, we've been coming home early to make time to relax after work. But this time, we had errands in the afternoon, so we'll be coming home late. We went to Tokyu Department Store, which I heard had been renovated. But when we got there, the renovation seemed quite minor. After coming home, we usually get some food to eat, but this time I only had loose change in my pocket. My partner said, "Let's just go home!" But since there's Kamaei nearby, I asked if she wanted anything. She said, "I feel like eating something." So I asked what she wanted, and she said, "Maybe a bread roll or tempura." I then ordered a bread roll and tempura for her, and surprisingly, I had 22 yen left over. Despite saying, "I only have loose change left," my partner showed no intention of contributing any money. Back home, the bread roll and tempura were enjoyed with beer. The slight sweetness of Kamaei's dishes is something I don't dislike. It was undeniably delicious. Even when switching to shochu with hot water, Kamaei's charm remained the same. I didn't expect to not have any photos of Kamaei in this review.

One of the top kamaboko shops in Hokkaido, located in the Tokyu department store basement. I visited the store, although I'm not a big fan of kamaboko. However, my wife loves it. Personally, I don't like the unnatural sweetness in their kamaboko. Isn't kamaboko made from white fish? Are fish naturally that sweet? What is that sweetness from? I tried the four items in the photo, but I have no comments. Apologies to all Kamaboko fans.

It's been a while since I visited the department store basement. With the Obon holiday, there were many middle-aged men like me and families around. I feel like drinking cold sake. Let's buy some kamaboko from Kamaei! In the photo, the top is pan roll, the bottom is hiraten, the right is the August special with octopus and ginger, and the left is cheese and edamame, I think... The vacuum-packed kamaboko that can be shipped to other regions is delicious, but I prefer the fried ones you buy at the store. I like to dip them in a little soy sauce before eating. There are so many different types and limited-time offerings, they all look delicious! They are perfect for snacking rather than as a main dish. The fried kamaboko here doesn't feel greasy, maybe they have some special oil or they always use fresh oil. My friend seems to prefer sparkling wine over sake, so we headed to the cheese section. The displays in the department store basement are amazing, but I had to leave before I spent too much money.

On June 14, 2016, I took the day off and watched the movie festival "Harry and Tonto" at Sapporo Cinema Frontier at 10 am. It was a great experience to see an old movie like this on the big screen. Starting from July, they will be showing the unforgettable movie "Back to the Future" at various times, which I am looking forward to. I decided to buy some Kamaboko from Kamaei as a souvenir. I found out that there are three Kamaei stores around Sapporo Station. Today, I will go to the Kamaei store located on the basement floor of Sapporo Tokyu Department Store. Unlike the lively atmosphere at Daimaru Department Store, the store here feels more relaxed. I was curious about the Kamaboko of the month for June, "Ebi Mayo Sand"! It's a must-try for shrimp mayo lovers. I bought 4 pieces of Ebi Mayo Sand and a variety set with 6 different types of Kamaboko packed in a bag. In the store, a young female staff member was diligently frying the Kamaboko. Ebi Mayo Sand from Kamaei is a popular product where ground fish paste is wrapped in bread and deep-fried. For this variation, they mixed shrimp, solid mayo, and egg into the ground fish paste, wrapped it in bread, and deep-fried it. I tried it! The bread texture is minimal, and the soft Kamaboko is the star. It's packed with small shrimp, giving a nice crunch, and you can really taste the importance of the shrimp. The solid mayo spreads nicely in your mouth, and I couldn't help but finish half of it in a few bites. Ebi Mayo... what a wonderful combination of words. Each element complements the other, creating a dish that exceeds imagination. I got a bit too excited about Ebi Mayo, but it's really delicious. One piece costs ¥237 including tax. If they were to sell this Ebi Mayo Sand at a food stall during the Sapporo Festival, I think they could easily sell it for ¥500 per piece. It was truly delicious. I might come back to buy more. Thank you for the meal!

This is a review of a long-established kamaboko shop located on the basement floor of Tokyu Department Store in front of Sapporo Station, established in 1905. Although their main store is in Otaru, they have branches in various locations such as Daimaru, Mitsukoshi, Marui Imai, Eska, and New Chitose Airport, making their presence in Sapporo quite strong. The shop offers packed and individually sold fried kamaboko, with options like bread rolls, mayo-fried kamaboko, and a Tokyu-exclusive Fukubukuro. Despite being a long-established shop, the atmosphere is quite casual. The items are freshly cooked in-store, and when eaten in Tokyo, they were still warm. The bread rolls are made by wrapping fish paste in bread before frying, resulting in a delicious taste without any discomfort. These fried kamaboko items can only be purchased at the shop as packing them affects their texture significantly. The mayo-fried kamaboko and Fukubukuro, made by wrapping fish paste around mayonnaise and bacon with quail egg, were also delicious. What these three fried kamaboko have in common is the good taste of the fish paste, which is natural and sweet without any strong flavor. Additionally, the fresh oil used plays an active role as a seasoning. The shop continues to innovate without resting on its long-established reputation, as seen from these three kamaboko items. Sapporo is said to be suitable for test marketing new products due to its lack of cultural bias and a spirit of progressiveness, which may be the reason behind the high presence of this kamaboko shop.

Kamae, founded in 1905, is a long-established kamaboko specialty store with its main store in Otaru. This year marks its 109th anniversary. The factory in Otaru is popular among tourists. Kamae has outlets in all department stores in Sapporo. I visited the store when I came to Tokyu Department Store. The store is located on the basement floor of Tokyu Department Store Sapporo in the JR Sapporo Station area in Chuo Ward, Sapporo City. For detailed location information, please check on Tabelog. While Kamae offers traditional kamaboko, their popular item is the fried kamaboko. Each department store in Sapporo has its own exclusive products. Although Tokyu Department Store also has exclusive items, they are listed as a secret menu item. There is no indication of being a Tokyu store exclusive. They are not displayed in the regular section. They are included in the "Variety Set" by default. You can freely customize the contents of the "Variety Set" and create your original set. I made an original Variety Set with "Fukubukuro" and another favorite fried kamaboko. ■Contents of the Original Variety Set■ Fukubukuro Variety Set Exclusive item Weight: Actual measurement 155g Exclusive item at Tokyu Department Store in Sapporo (unknown in Otaru) Tube-shaped fried kamaboko tied around with kampyo. Inside, there are bacon and quail eggs, which are shaped like gold nugget candies. Price: 231 yen Delicious taste♪ ■Hirate Weight: Actual measurement 112g Round-shaped fried kamaboko The most popular item in the store A simple fried kamaboko with a hint of sweetness that never gets boring. Price: 189 yen ■Miso Nanban Weight: Actual measurement 118g Rectangular-shaped fried kamaboko The second most popular item in the store Based on miso flavor with a slight spiciness from chili peppers. Contains green onions. Price: 168 yen Personally, I like to warm it at home and enjoy it with soy sauce and wasabi. It goes perfectly with sake as a snack. It can be enjoyed cold or warm. "Hirate" is known for its classic deliciousness. I recommend the "Fukubukuro." Don't forget to get the "Variety Set" when you visit Tokyu Department Store. You can fill it with your choice of items. Next time, I want to create another "Original Variety Set" with "Fukubukuro" and "Hirate." It was delicious, thank you.

This is a chain store familiar with Kamaei, but the variety of items at this location was abundant and the customers were flocking in. I used to avoid it because I'm not a fan of processed foods, but I was drawn in by the smell of freshly fried pan rolls and decided to buy one to eat on the spot. The freshly fried pan roll had the perfect crispy texture on the outside, and the filling inside was moist and fluffy without any fishy smell, as it also contained meat. It remained piping hot until the end, allowing me to fully enjoy the deliciousness of the freshly fried roll. This is how I gradually overcome my aversion to foods I don't like...

Today, I purchased some kamaboko from "Kamaei" and it's my favorite out of all the different shops I've tried. The texture, portion size, and price are just right. This time, I got the spicy "miso nanban" flavor, which goes well with alcohol. I would be happy if I could easily buy it in Tokyo.

On October 14, 2020, when I returned home, I found bread rolls on the dining table. It had been a while since I had them, so I was surprised. It turns out my brother bought them as a souvenir when he visited during the day. I decided to warm them up in the oven since they had cooled down. As a result, the outer bread part got slightly burnt, but that's necessary to heat them up properly. After warming them up, I enjoyed them as a snack with some sake. The bread rolls were delicious, especially with the added crispy texture from the baking. I also tried adding some soy sauce with bonito dashi halfway through, which enhanced the flavor even more. Overall, I was reminded of how tasty bread rolls from Kamaboko are, and I was grateful for the surprise treat from my brother. Thank you, it was delicious!
