Sapporo Soup Curry Review: After a night of drinking in Susukino, the next morning I was craving soup curry. Staying at a hotel with a 10 am check-out time, I decided to head south and found a place that opens at 10:30 am. The hamburger soup curry was delicious, with a classic base and a nice balance of spices. I ordered it with a spice level of 40, which was just right. The soup was plentiful, with a generous amount of meat and tofu. The pickles were also tasty, with a strong oriental spice flavor. Overall, the soup had a refreshing broth and deep flavor. The staff were friendly and welcoming, making the experience even better. This soup curry is definitely worth trying, whether you're feeling under the weather or just looking for a unique taste.

Chicken soup curry for 1,360 yen (tax included). I chose the lychee time for 100 yen off, making it 1,260 yen (tax included). This was my first time trying the spicy level, so I chose 30 times spicy and then toned it down a bit, but it was still okay for me. The ingredients were simple, with chicken, tofu, and bell peppers in moderate sizes. The chicken was tender and easy to eat. Tofu is uncommon in soup curry, but it was good. The bell peppers were normal. The soup was light and refreshing. Lemon with rice was a nice touch. It came with pickles, which the staff mentioned were apple-flavored. It was a mysterious taste that added a nice accent. Considering the number and amount of ingredients, the cost performance is questionable. If it's under 1,000 yen, it's worth it.

It's been quite a while since I remembered and came back here. This is the place where I first tried soup curry and discovered this dish. Back when it wasn't as well known, a friend invited me to try this interesting curry, and I was impressed by the taste. The restaurant used to be located a little further back on Tohoku Street from where it is now. Today, I ordered the Sri Lankan curry with a spice level of 50, along with extra rice and extra soup. The taste is just as delicious as I remember. I had never tried the extra soup before, so I'm happy to be able to enjoy it today. With many favorite restaurants closing down, I hope this place continues to serve its unchanged deliciousness for a long time. This taste is unforgettable.

It's been 25 years! When I lived in Sapporo in the 90s, soup curry was not yet popular nationwide. I think. I went to various places, but this place was close to my house and I often passed by it for work, so I came here a lot. Among the famous shops at that time, I think this one was more modest. And they are still doing well now. The yellow hut is just like it was back then. When you enter the store... Hmm, was it like this back then? The Sri Lankan curry for 1170 yen was spicy x100. The bone-in chicken was tender and juicy. The potatoes, carrots, eggplant, and bell peppers were beautiful. It was delicious just as I imagined. After licking the plate clean, I realized I had forgotten about the onsen egg. The yolk was a very pale yellow. I'm glad I came.

In 2023/6, I had the Chicken (Lunch) for 980 yen at a long-standing restaurant established in 1978 in Nango 18-chome. This pioneer soup curry shop has a lodge-like triangular roof and a spacious interior with high ceilings. It was a peaceful time with only two groups of customers past 1 pm on a weekday, so I had a large table to myself. Although I was hungry, I opted for a realistic amount of food, choosing the simple "Chicken" which came with tofu and bell peppers, and half a portion of rice. The soup was light with minimal oil, offering a subtle Japanese flavor with a strong umami taste from the spices. It was delicious, although the spiciness level of 80 was quite hot for me. The chicken was tender, the bell peppers were crispy, and the tofu soaked up the flavorful soup well. The rice came with a lemon wedge, and the pickles had a mysterious yet spicy flavor. I regret not visiting this excellent restaurant sooner, as the lunch discount made it even more worthwhile. This is a top-notch restaurant where you can enjoy a satisfyingly spicy meal without breaking the bank. Thank you for the meal!

#Pole Pole #Minamigo 18-chome #Sapporo As a fan of eggplants, I couldn't miss out on this! Eggplant curry (1430yen) with a spiciness level of 40 (direct spiciness from chili peppers) was just right with the addition of a soft-boiled egg and sweet yogurt sauce. The thick slices of eggplant were fried perfectly, not too soft but delicious. "I'm an eggplant, and I'm seriously taking the spotlight here." This was the first time I encountered such a confident eggplant! The dish came with 3-4 large pieces of eggplant and just a small piece of tofu. The soup was simple but just the right amount. I must also mention the friendliness of the staff at the restaurant! They were incredibly nice! When I asked if I could sit outside because the weather was nice, they quickly prepared a table for me. It was a pleasant experience. The restaurant has parking space for three cars next to it. Around 12:30 on a holiday, there were about 3 groups of customers already there and 2 more came in later. It took about 18 minutes from ordering to serving the food!

I enjoyed the Sri Lankan chicken and vegetable dish with a spice level of 20. It was delicious and just the right amount of spiciness for me. The dish came with a poached egg, which I thought was a boiled egg at first. Personally, I prefer boiled eggs. Next time, I might try a spice level of 30. I saw other customers ordering spice levels of 70 or higher!

After 13:00, there were about 3 cars parked in front of the store, making it a bit difficult to park. The store has a villa-like appearance. Inside, there is a warm atmosphere with a wooden theme. Both the owner and the staff are friendly and nice. The menu had a variety of options, including sets that come with salad and a drink. I ordered the Sri Lankan curry with a spice level of 20 (the store rates medium as 10 and hot as 30). The main ingredients were bone-in chicken, potatoes, carrots, bell peppers, and shimeji mushrooms. It also came with a side of soft-boiled egg and yogurt for seasoning. There was also a mango pickle on the side. Honestly, it was delicious. Good soup curry makes you end up slurping the soup without even eating the rice, right? That's how good this soup was. The spices were fragrant, and the yogurt added a nice kick later on. The soft-boiled egg was made with high-quality eggs, with a lighter yolk color than usual. The ingredients were well-prepared, with the chicken being tender and flavorful. The spice level of 20 was personally just right for me, but I might try level 30 next time, considering adding more yogurt later. This is definitely a restaurant I want to visit again.

I visited "Pole Pole" on September 16th for the first time. It was my first visit to this area, and I went for breakfast after finishing some work. There is a parking space on the right side of the front of the store, and I visited at 10:40 am. As I climbed up the wooden deck, I saw a sign saying "Sugawara" at the entrance of the store. Oh, so it's a shop combined with a home. When I entered, there were probably two first-time users, maybe the owner and his wife? The interior was done in a woody style, with the owner's personal touch here and there. They guided me to my preferred seat, and I chose a seat by the window. The central table seemed to be used for magazines. I checked the menu and ordered the recommended Sri Lankan soup curry (rice normal, spiciness level 10) for 1230 yen. The spiciness level can be chosen from 0 to 300 in increments of 5, and I chose 10, which was described as medium spiciness. They asked if I wanted pickles with my order, and I said yes. The food was served after about 10 minutes, and it came with a soft-boiled egg, yogurt, and chicken bones. The toppings for the soup curry included chicken, mushrooms, carrots, and potatoes. The rice was about 200g, and it came with a lemon wedge and the pickles I requested. The cutlery provided was reusable chopsticks, fork, and spoon. The menu mentioned that it came with an egg, but it was a soft-boiled egg. I tried the soup curry, and even though it was spicy, I could still taste the flavors. The chicken was tender and well-cooked. I didn't add the egg and yogurt to the soup and just enjoyed it as it was. The pickles were a bit unusual, very hard and difficult to chew. I didn't end up adding extra lemon to the rice. The plate the rice was served on seemed homemade but was chipped. The lunch was discounted to 1130 yen. Thank you for the meal.

First visit. The shop is open from 10:30 am. The master? greeted me saying "Did you come in this heat?" "Is this your first time?" etc. It felt like a cozy café with friendly female staff explaining the menu. I ordered Sri Lankan curry (chicken and vegetables) number 300, which comes with a hot spring egg. It comes with rice and lemon and mango pickles. The soup portion is not too big. The spiciness is totally fine. The mango pickles have a slightly strong salty taste. The lemon is appreciated. The soup is light, but when you squeeze lemon on the rice, it becomes even more refreshing. The hot spring egg, when put in the soup, becomes lukewarm, and it's not seasoned when put on rice, so I gave it to my child. It somehow feels like it would taste better if it was a bit spicier. Without spiciness, it might be a bit bland, due to its lightness. Also, it's rare for a curry shop to provide a towel for wiping hands, which was a nice touch. If you want to relax in a cozy atmosphere, this place has very friendly staff and is recommended.

I visited a soup curry restaurant along the Tohoku Street in July 2022. It opens at 10:30, which is convenient. I chose the Sri Lankan-style soup curry again, opting for a large soup, small rice, and a spice level of 250. It took about 10 minutes to be served. The bowl and the soup were piping hot, with a smooth and spicy broth that was flavorful and delicious. Even though the spice level was 250, I found it slightly lacking in heat, but I still enjoyed the curry more as the heat increased. The chicken was tender and the other ingredients were well-cooked and tasty. The large soup portion was even more generous than I had imagined! I was pleased to find lemon and mango pickles served with the rice. The ambiance of the restaurant was pleasant and cozy. Next time, I plan to increase the spice level and have the soup at a medium consistency.

In the pouring rain, I went on a pilgrimage to the holy land of soup curry. One of the lineages of soup curry is said to be Sri Lankan, and the pioneer of this is said to be Pore Pore. However, it seems that there is no connection with the country of Sri Lanka itself, so it is essentially an original taste unique to this place. It is not a Japanese-style soup with a strong dashi base, nor is it an ethnic Southeast Asian curry, nor is it an Indian or Sri Lankan curry. It's more like a home-style curry soup. The vegetables are the main attraction, so this simple style works really well! The vegetables are incredibly flavorful. The added eggplant was really good, with a whole large one included. Enjoyed it. The onsen egg was also high quality. It seems to be a special kind of egg. The skill of the long-established restaurant's sourcing is impressive. It was wonderful... The hospitality that takes care of the spiciness was also top-notch. I ended up getting a stamp card without even thinking. I have to come back again.

[May 2022 visit] This restaurant is one of the top 100 curry restaurants selected in the Eat Log Curry Best 100 EAST 2020. It is a long-established soup curry restaurant in Sapporo. I arrived early and lined up a bit before opening, but there were no other customers ahead of me. I was considering getting a set menu, but the prices were quite high. I ended up ordering the chicken for 1,080 yen, with extra rice for 60 yen, and chose a spiciness level of 30. It was served in about 10 minutes. [Soup] The soup has a lot of red chili peppers and has a thin consistency. I could taste various spices, but the chili peppers were strong, giving it a simple flavor. It's one of the better thin soups I've had! I didn't get tired of the soup, so I wish there was more of it. [Rice] I ordered a normal amount of rice, which was okay. It wasn't quite enough for me, though. The taste was decent. [Ingredients] The chicken was tender and flavorful, of good quality. The other ingredients were bell peppers and fried tofu. The bell peppers were average, while the fried tofu was small and easy to eat. Surprisingly, the fried tofu was delicious, and I wished there was more of it. I realized I should have ordered a menu with more vegetables. I thought the soup was delicious. Thank you for the meal.

This is "Soup Curry Porepore" in Sapporo City. I had some business in Sapporo, Hokkaido and happened to come across Porepore while driving following Google Maps directions. It was a place I had been curious about for a while. I passed by initially and then circled back, parking in the lot next to the restaurant. Since I had some time before they opened, I waited in my car before going in. The elderly owner, wearing a bandana, greeted me. The couple has been running the restaurant for over 30 years, making them one of the oldest in the soup curry scene. I had the "Porepore Curry Set A," which came with Sri Lankan curry, salad, and a drink. The curry had tender chicken with eggplant, potatoes, bell peppers, mushrooms, and other ingredients. The soup was clear yet flavorful, leaving a lingering umami taste in my mouth. It was a classic and delicious soup curry. The chatty owner mentioned that they used to travel around Hokkaido, even camping in my town once. We had a great conversation, and I ended up staying longer than planned. Thank you for the meal.

In Sapporo Soup Curry, there are three main roots. The first is "Magic Spice," which coined the term "soup curry" and sparked a major trend in 1993. Its roots can be traced back to Indonesia's Soto Ayam. However, even before the soup curry boom, several other restaurants were already serving what we now consider soup curry. One of these is "Ajantha," established in 1971, which originated "Indian curry." The other is the original "Sri Lankan curry," which started with "Pole Pole" in 1978. The name "Pole Pole" means "slowly" in Swahili, reflecting the relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant. The menu doesn't explicitly mention "soup curry" since the restaurant predates the term, but it is undoubtedly a soup curry establishment. The "Sri Lankan curry" is a signature dish at Pole Pole, featuring chicken, vegetables, and eggs. Despite its name, it's not an authentic Sri Lankan dish but rather a unique creation inspired by Sri Lankan flavors. The soup base is a blend of Japanese dashi and spices, with a moderate level of spiciness. The dish is served with tender chicken thigh, potatoes, and carrots, showcasing the local Hokkaido produce. A side of onsen tamago (soft-boiled egg) and homemade yogurt complements the meal, offering a soothing end to the dining experience. Pole Pole, a long-standing establishment in Sapporo's soup curry scene, maintains its natural and relaxed atmosphere, inviting guests to unwind and savor their meal.

Sri Lanka is requested to be spicy level 30. The parking is difficult, but the inside of the shop is cozy. It has a warm feeling. Now, as for the curry taste, the soup is delicious in just one bite. The chicken leg can be easily shredded with a spoon. I tried mango pickle for the first time and I like the taste. The potatoes are sweet and delicious. The egg is warm, but... if you put it in the soup, it seems like it will become lukewarm, so I tried mixing it with the rice. As a result, the rice became cold, and the soup became lukewarm. It seems like it would be perfect if they cooked the rice along with the soup to make the perfect soup curry. I wonder if they would do it if I asked... Thank you for the meal.

About 30 years ago, a friend had told me that Polé Polé was delicious. The building has changed since then and now has a log cabin-style structure. I happened to pass by and found a parking spot available, so I decided to revisit after a long time. I ordered the Sri Lankan chicken with vegetables and a boiled egg, with a spice level of 100. The dish came with yogurt and a hot spring egg. The rice was served with lemon and mango pickles. While the spiciness was fine for me, the chili pepper was a bit intense. The chicken was tender and delicious. It was interesting to have tofu included in the dish. I wonder if the original flavors would be more noticeable if the spiciness was toned down a bit. If the spiciness is too strong, you can adjust it with the yogurt provided, although I didn't need to. I enjoyed the meal very much and will definitely visit again.

On a holiday, I had some errands in Shin Sapporo and decided to have brunch around 11 am. Even though it's a popular place, there was only one group of customers at that time. I guess I might be the only one choosing soup curry for brunch...^^; I was seated at a table where the morning sun was shining, which felt really nice since it was cold outside. I wanted to stay there forever... After some contemplation, I ordered the Sri Lankan curry for 1350 yen with normal rice and a spice level of 30. I also ordered a coffee for 220 yen after the meal. It arrived shortly after. The ingredients were typical like eggplant, bell pepper, carrot, and shimeji mushrooms, but the fried tofu was really delicious. The soup had a strong spicy flavor, but it was somehow gentle. The bone-in chicken was so tender that it fell apart easily with a spoon and was delicious. And...! They served homemade yogurt, pickles, and a hot spring egg. The yogurt was quite thick and homemade, with a unique texture. They recommended adding it to the soup, so I tasted the original soup first and then added the yogurt all at once. It had a distinctive taste that I really enjoyed! The pickles also had a strong flavor but were delicious. Towards the end, I tried the hot spring egg for a change in taste. It provided a natural sweetness that balanced out the spiciness. I eat soup curry every week, but this place has quickly become one of my favorites. It's a bit far from my home, but I look forward to trying different menu items next time! ^ ^

Arrived on Sunday around 11 o'clock. No customers before me, but a group of two arrived after. Second visit in 2 and a half years. There were two female staff members besides the owner. The background music sounded like Celtic music. The menu prices had increased slightly since my last visit. This time, I decided to splurge and ordered the "Seafood and Vegetable Curry" (1540 yen) with a spice level of 20 (medium-hot). I was asked if I wanted pickles on the side, and I said yes. The dish arrived shortly after, along with a side of yogurt and a soft-boiled egg. The owner mentioned that I could mix the yogurt into the curry if I liked. The curry was light and flavorful, with a good balance of spiciness at level 20, perfect for those who like medium heat. The dish had large whole shrimp, scallops, and mussels. The thick-cut eggplant was particularly delicious. The pickles provided a unique tangy flavor. I enjoyed about half of the dish before adding the yogurt and egg, which added a refreshing creaminess to the flavors. Overall, I was quite satisfied with the delicious meal, although it was a bit on the pricey side. When paying, the owner's wife asked me if spice level 20 was okay, to which I replied, "Yes, it was great!" I will definitely come back again!

Sri Lanka spiciness level 30, less rice. The pickles have a tropical chutney with mango flavor. When you order, you get lemon, chutney, onsen egg, yogurt, and various condiments for flavor variation. The spiciness is just right, causing a good amount of sweating. You can also taste tomatoes, but the spiciness is different from the spice in Japanese curry rice. Some may not like the powdery texture of the spices. However, for those who come to eat soup curry, they might be in the minority. The chicken is cooked not in a crispy style but in a soup-like texture, with vegetables that can easily be eaten with a spoon. Above all, the customer service is excellent, and they seem to value communication with customers, even during checkout. This long-standing soup curry restaurant seems to be eager to attract regular customers. Overall, it's great.
