The name of this restaurant comes from the saying "No matter how many generations pass, the taste remains unique to the first generation." Established in 1994, the first generation is still beloved by locals and tourists alike. While all the menu items are carefully crafted, my favorite is definitely the "New Salt Ramen!" I arrived 5 minutes before opening on a Saturday. The parking lot in front of the restaurant has space for 2-3 cars, and there is a gravel parking lot halfway up the hill that can accommodate over 10 cars, all free of charge. The restaurant was not too crowded on this Saturday, with a wait time of about 20 minutes after opening. I opted for the New Salt Ramen priced at 930 yen, along with a side of rice for an additional 260 yen, totaling close to 1,200 yen. Despite the price, the delicious taste of the first generation's ramen makes it worth it for me. The New Salt Ramen had a perfect balance of rich and deep flavors that only the first generation can achieve. The noodles were chewy and paired excellently with the soup. The thick slices of tender chashu and flavorful menma added to the overall experience. The side dish of rice was a great addition, especially with the self-made "Cha-mayo" using the provided seaweed. I ended up finishing the soup completely, thanks to the refreshing barley tea provided on the table. This was my fourth review, but I have visited this beloved ramen shop in Otaru over 20 times. I am curious about trying the "Kasenuki" ramen someday, even though I haven't had it before.

I visited the popular ramen shop for the first time around 2:30 pm, and luckily there was no long line. The limited 30 servings of white miso soy ramen was already sold out, so I chose the soy sauce ramen which was recommended. I was expecting a light taste, but it turned out to be very rich and thick, similar to a tonkotsu ramen. I was still hungry after finishing the ramen, so I ordered an extra serving of the staff meal. Although the chashu in the staff meal was delicious, I probably shouldn't have ordered it while trying to diet. The soup was a bit salty, but they have other types like new salt and white miso soy which I would like to try next time. I will definitely come back to try their other ramen varieties.

I visited Ramen Shodai during my business trip to Hokkaido. I tried their popular soy sauce ramen with extra toppings of chashu and flavored egg. I also had a chashu mayo onigiri, which is chashu mixed with mayonnaise. The ramen was on the rich side and I found it a bit heavy for my taste. Eating it with the chashu mayo helped balance the flavors. The chashu was tender and delicious. Thank you for the meal.

I went to Ramen Honten Otaru Main Store for the second time last Sunday. I arrived around 10:30 and was able to enter the store first when it opened at 11. There was already a line forming before opening. The staff's service was great, and the store had a nice atmosphere. This time, I tried the New Salt Ramen and Char-mayo. The noodles were medium-thick curly noodles, and the light soup was easy to drink all of. The Char-mayo onigiri was also delicious. I'm interested in trying other ramen dishes, so I will definitely visit again.

I had lunch at "Shodai" by the sea in Otaru. I was torn between soy sauce, miso, and salt ramen, but I was drawn to the "limited to 30 servings per day" sign, so I ordered the white soy sauce ramen for 1,050 yen. In the middle of the bowl, there was simmered pork cheek meat, which added a punch to the visual presentation. The meat was so tender that it crumbled easily when picked up with chopsticks, but it had a firm texture and was incredibly delicious. The soup was also very tasty, and I finished every last bit of it.

Otaru sightseeing. I planned to have kamaboko as a snack at Kamae-san, eat Genghis Khan for dinner, and finish with ramen, but I already feel full after eating at Kamae-san. I gave up on Genghis Khan and went straight to ramen for dinner. When it comes to Otaru, it's gotta be Hatsu-dai. It was still early for dinner, so we were able to get in without waiting. When I asked if they had the limited 30 servings of shirotamari soy sauce ramen, the answer was "no" right away. It's not a good idea to order it in the evening at a popular restaurant. So, I ordered the soy sauce ramen for 940 yen. After a short wait, the soy sauce ramen arrived. I remember being impressed when I had it here during my time working in Sapporo. The second time can sometimes be disappointing, so I cautiously took the first bite. It was delicious! It didn't disappoint and the soup was so good I drank it all. I'll have to give up on the Genghis Khan this time, but no regrets. Thank you for the meal. It was delicious. I want to come back again.

I visited Otaru and stopped by the popular ramen shop called Mikan. It was summer vacation for the nearby schools, so I decided to visit the shop early. When I passed by around 10:30, there was no line yet. I went to a convenience store near JR Minami-Otaru Station to look for local gourmet food and when I came back, a line had started to form. By the time the shop opened at 11, there were about 15 groups lined up behind me. I ordered the shirotamari shoyu and miso ramen. The soup was rich and flavorful, and the noodles were delicious. I resisted getting the charmayo topping because I was planning to try other foods as well. It looked so tasty though... It was a comforting bowl of ramen that would be perfect for warming up on a cold day. Since I don't usually go to this area, I was glad I could try it out.

1st picture → New miso ramen
2nd picture → Limited to 30 servings a day, white tamari soy sauce
I arrived around 11:30 and there were already about 5 groups lined up in front of me. However, the efficiency of the staff was so good and I was able to enter in about 15 to 20 minutes due to timing. The new miso ramen had a miso flavor, but it tasted like nothing I had ever eaten before (I can't express it well). The white tamari soy sauce one had a mild taste and a shellfish flavor. It seems like it could be a love-hate situation... I personally liked it.

I visited several popular ramen shops in Hokkaido, but I liked Ramen Shodai in Otaru the most! This place is a representative ramen shop in Otaru. The Shiro Tamarin Shoyu Ramen for 1050 yen was my favorite. The cha-shu pork was like braised pork, very tender and delicious! The curly noodles were just right, not too thin or too thick. The seafood broth was also tasty. #RamenShodai #OtaruGourmet #HokkaidoGourmet #FoodiesWanted

Last week, I passed by during lunchtime and saw a long line, so I decided to skip it. But today, I finished my morning work quickly and arrived before the opening. There were 17 people waiting in line when they opened, but I was able to enter smoothly. I ordered the limited 30 servings per day "White Miso Soy Sauce" ramen. I wanted to try it since I came early. Just so you know, they don't offer a large portion. I received my bowl in about 10 minutes. The ramen had a golden color. The chashu and noodles were different from their other menu items. The noodles were medium-thin and twisted, not the square-shaped ultra-aged noodles. The white wine and seafood broth-based soup paired better with these noodles than the ultra-aged ones. The chashu was very flavorful and tender. However, personally, I didn't find the limited ramen as impactful as the soy sauce and new salt flavors I tried before. I think I prefer the regular menu with the ultra-aged noodles. I want to try the large portion next time. Maybe I'll go back to my favorite, the new salt flavor.

New Salt Ramen (Large) Otaru claims to be for work, but the real purpose seems to be here ^ ^ The soup I wanted to eat at the main store, which is only available there. First, the soup. The umami of shiitake mushrooms, kombu, and seafood is condensed. One sip and you'll be knocked out! Incredibly delicious, you won't get tired of it until the last drop. As a fan of shiitake mushrooms, it was a great match for me. It's totally different from the original salt ramen. And the outstanding square cross-section medium-straight noodles. The chewy texture like al dente pasta harmonizes wonderfully with the soup. I wish they would offer it at the nearby Hassamu store, but according to the staff, the way they make it is different at the main store and other stores. To give an example, the main store is analog, and the other stores are digital. Anyway, you have to come to the main store next time ~ this time, I tried the white tamari.

I visited Ramen Shodai Otaru Honten, located in the tourist district of Otaru. Despite a few people lining up before noon, I was able to be seated relatively quickly. The interior of the shop was stylish and beautifully retro-chic. I tried the limited 30 servings per day of "Tamarari Shoyu Ramen" and a side dish. The sweet and fishy aroma of the Tamarari Shoyu soup was quite addictive. The braised pork was tender and delicious. The noodles had a satisfying texture, not too thin or too thick. The side dish of tuna mayo and pickles on rice was simple but tasty. There are other ramen options that also look delicious, so I will definitely be coming back while in Hokkaido. I will visit again soon.

Soy sauce ramen + staff meal
On the way to Otaru, I passed by the original Hassamu store and decided to go to the main store ^ ^ Arrived just before noon. Surprisingly not crowded and got seated smoothly. The store renovated from an apple warehouse has a nice and charming atmosphere. The staff meal was served first. It looked like it was high in calories and carbs (^^;; Well, it's a special occasion so why not. The taste was as expected... Now, onto the ramen! First, the soup. Exactly as described in the menu, it has a deep flavor. Some might find it too rich, but personally, I like this rich taste. It's extremely delicious. And the noodles are superbly delicious too! I found out later that they use special noodles from the local Katou Seimenjo in Otaru, aged for 9 days. The straight flat noodles perfectly blend with the rich soup, but the noodles themselves have a delicious flavor that doesn't lose to the soup at all. The more you chew, the tastier it gets. I can see why it's loved by locals rather than just tourists. Next time, I'll go to the nearby Hassamu store and get a large serving ^ ^ Noodles: Katou Seimenjo

The soy sauce ramen here is rich and delicious, unlike the light soy sauce ramen in Honshu. The noodles are straight and slightly thin. The chashu is tender and flavorful. The highlight is definitely the tasty soup! I visited around 3 pm, but the staff's service was lacking. I asked about the limited white soy sauce ramen, but was coldly told, "We don't have it at this time." When I requested an egg with my ramen, I received a similar response. It would have been nice to be informed earlier. It was a busy Saturday, maybe they were tired from the crowd of tourists. I didn't pay much attention, but the two young girls next to me were loudly recommending trying the soy sauce ramen and new miso ramen, mentioning that the limited white soy sauce was sold out at this time. It's a shame that not all customers received the same level of service, considering how delicious the ramen was.

On June 22, 2023 (Thursday), I had lunch at Shiro Tamari Shoyu in Otaru after finishing work. It's been a while since I've been here, and it's no wonder it's a popular spot in Otaru. Customers kept coming in one after another.

Soy Sauce Ramen for 940 yen
Half-boiled seasoned egg topping for 130 yen
The soy sauce ramen has a rich and deep flavor in the soup. After almost finishing the soup, adding garlic will mellow out the strong flavor, so I recommend adding it in the second half. It was delicious! (>_<)

This was my 20th visit or so. I usually go on weekends, so there's always a line, but when I took a day off and visited on a weekday, I was able to get a seat smoothly just after 12 o'clock. This restaurant used to be all about soy sauce, but one time my companion ordered miso, and when I tried a spoonful of the soup, I was completely hooked on miso, and I've been ordering miso ever since (not the new miso, just the regular one). It's delicious from the first bite, the large slices of chashu are tender, and I end up eating in silence. However, lately, maybe due to my age, I've started to find the saltiness too strong towards the end, and I can't finish all the soup. It's the most popular restaurant in Otaru, so if you can, I recommend going on a weekday.

Today I went to Otaru for work. I visited the popular main store there. It was my first visit and I had a hard time deciding what to order, but since many other customers were ordering the soy sauce ramen, I decided to order that along with the char-mayo. The soy sauce ramen had a soup base that I think was made from dried sardines, but it was a delicious soup that was quite addictive. The char-mayo was also very tasty. It's easy to see why this place is so popular. Otaru is also becoming more crowded with tourists, which is nice to see. Thank you for the meal.

The soup is topped with hot, transparent lard. The topping is a bit lacking in eggs lately. The flavor seems to have dried bonito in it. It looks rich, but surprisingly light. The chashu is generously sized, which is nice. The noodles are curly noodles. I've been here a few times, but it's still delicious.

I felt like having ramen at Otaru Canal Soba, so I visited a ramen shop that is loved by locals. I was planning to order the "Shiro Tamari Shoyu" based on my research, but by the time I arrived at 6:00 PM, it was already sold out. The female staff recommended the Shoyu ramen, so I ordered the "Shoyu ramen with Ajitama topping" and the highly rated "Shin Shio with Ajitama topping". When the ramen was served, it looked delicious. The staff proudly said, "The ramen here is delicious!" The soup was very tasty with a strong soy sauce flavor. The Ajitama was perfectly half-boiled, but the egg yolk tasted sweeter due to the salty soup. The chashu was tender and well-seasoned, very delicious. It was a great meal, but the salty taste may be a bit strong for older people. I think it might be time for me to graduate from ramen soon.

I went to Ramen Shodai Otaru Main Store! I felt like I had to try it at least once in Otaru... so I went to Ramen Shodai. There was a small line forming in front of the store, so I decided to wait in line. I was a bit unsure if just waiting in line was the right thing to do, but later I found out that it was. While waiting, I was given a menu to order from. I ordered the soy sauce ramen for 940 yen. It was a bit pricey, but I had no choice. The ramen arrived at my table very quickly, in about 3 minutes. The bowl was quite small. The soy sauce flavor was strong and salty throughout, which I thought I would get used to but it remained salty till the end. It seemed like there was no soup base in it. Since the soy sauce ramen is the most popular, many people were ordering it. The taste was good, but a bit too salty for my liking. The noodles were a bit soft. The portion was quite small, so I felt reassured that I could go to the next place without feeling too full. Overall, I'm glad I got to try Ramen Shodai's ramen. Now I can say I've experienced Otaru! Thank you for the meal.
