Near JR Onuma Koen Station, there is a famous shop for rice cakes. I have eaten their rice cakes many times in the past, including buying them on the express train. It had been over ten years since I last visited the shop. There is a spacious parking area behind the building. Most people come here for the original Onuma rice cakes, but they also sell other sweets. The Onuma rice cakes come in small and large sizes, with two flavor options: soy sauce and sweet bean paste, or soy sauce and sesame. This time, I bought the small size Onuma rice cakes (390 yen) with soy sauce and sesame, and enjoyed them with my wife at the outdoor seating area. The rice cakes were bite-sized and very soft. They were not too sweet, and I couldn't stop eating them. I finished the small size in no time. I thought about buying another one, but I decided against it considering dinner later. The prices are reasonable, so I highly recommend it when visiting Onuma.

Thanks to a friend who drove me, I was able to come here to buy the Onuma Dango featured in a certain manga (so grateful). The Onuma Dango here is modeled after the Onuma and Konuma in Onuma Park, a national park. Inside, there are small mochi pieces floating like islands in the pond, with a perfect balance of sweet bean paste and mitarashi sauce. The small mochi pieces are easy to pick up and eat. There are tables outside the shop, and I saw families enjoying Onuma Dango during a break from their drive. The Onuma Park is spacious and refreshing - such a happy drive, thank you friend!!

Just outside Onuma Koen Station. The Onuma dango featured in Golden Kamuy is sold here. It's also available at the Michi no Eki on certain days. There are small and large sizes, with the small size being just enough for one person. The dango is chewy but doesn't stick to your teeth or the container, making it easy to eat. To get to Onuma Koen Park, you can take a train or drive, but the train runs about once an hour so be sure to check the schedule beforehand. If you plan to stop by before catching your Shinkansen back, be aware that it can make your schedule quite tight.

There is a traditional Japanese confectionery shop near Onuma Koen Station (JR Hakodate Main Line). The shop is famous for its "Onuma Dango," which comes in two flavors: "soy sauce + sesame" and "soy sauce + red bean paste," both priced at 430 yen. The shop, established in 1905, has recently been rebuilt and now has a modern and clean look. The rice used in the dango is domestically produced and has a soft and chewy texture. The amount of soy sauce in both flavors is minimal, likely serving as a palate cleanser. I bought both flavors this time, and they were both delicious, with the red bean paste not being too sweet. The dango with soy sauce, sesame, and red bean paste were all delicious in their own right. I enjoyed them at the shop's table this time, and they were irresistible once I started eating them.

On August 18, 2023, when visiting Hakodate on a day trip, the must-buy souvenir is the Onuma dango. These dango are so addictive. Whenever I go to the southern part of Hokkaido, I always buy them on my way back. P.S. Today the weather was so good that I could see Aomori from here. It was surprisingly hot, not what you would expect from Hakodate.

I have been eating this since I was a child. I used to be able to buy it on the limited express train, but can you still buy it now? The taste is truly nostalgic, with no additives. I prefer the smooth red bean paste over sesame. I can easily finish one by myself, but I decided to share it with my family because I ate too much during my visit home. It's so light and delicious that I could eat it all by myself. I wish they had it in Aichi Prefecture... When will I have it next... I want to eat it again.

Following the footsteps of Golden Kamuy, I arrived at Numanoie. I would like to try their Numanoie Dango. There are two types to choose from: one with basic soy sauce flavor, and the other with sesame and sweet bean paste. I couldn't decide, so I got both. The small, soft dumplings are packed with sweetness in the marsh. Honestly, both flavors were delicious as expected, but I particularly enjoyed the fragrant sesame. Highly recommended!

A renowned restaurant that has been selected as one of the top 100. Located right in front of Onuma Koen Station. Perfect to visit after strolling through the beautiful Onuma National Park. The sweet aroma of black sesame dumplings fills the traditional atmosphere inside the shop. The fact that the expiration date is on the same day proves that they are handmade and made with real ingredients. Definitely worth a try! (^^)

I had it after a long time! The taste hasn't changed since I was a child and I was so impressed...(*´ч`*) The mochi is soft and chewy~♡ It only lasts for the day, so you have to go to Ohnuma to eat it. I bought both sesame and sweet bean paste, but I still prefer sesame! The portion is not that big for the small size, so if you're unsure, I recommend buying both. It will be a while before I can go again, so it was my last chance to eat it... It was really delicious! Thank you for the meal!

Located in the southwestern part of Hokkaido, Onuma Quasi-National Park is a 40-minute drive from Hakodate Station. It is famous as one of the New Three Views of Japan. The specialty of Onuma is the "Onuma Dango" sold at "Numa no Ie". Even on this day, it was bustling with tourists. I ordered the mitarashi and sesame flavors for takeout. The bite-sized dumplings made with 100% glutinous rice had a simple and timeless taste. It felt nostalgic in a way. The one-bite size dumplings skewered on toothpicks is a unique style of Onuma. The expiration date is on the same day, and they become hard as time passes, so it is recommended to eat them immediately after purchase inside the store.

Hokkaido Wanderlust Part 12: When driving around the outer perimeter of Lake Onuma in the early morning in Onuma Town, a red fox suddenly appeared! It seemed to have come looking for food, but remember not to feed wild animals. The parking lot on the side of Onuma House is open for free. You can also visit Lake Onuma, part of the Onuma National Park, for free. Onuma House, established in 1898, offers dumplings inspired by the islands floating in Lake Onuma. They come in two varieties: mitarashi soy sauce with sweet red bean paste, and sesame. The large size is ¥710 and the small size is ¥430, making it a reasonable option. The dumplings have a same-day expiration date, so they are not suitable for souvenirs. The mitarashi soy sauce is delicious, but the sesame flavor is the best! (。・ω・。)ノ♡

I finally got to visit a restaurant I've been wanting to go to for years. It's located in a hard-to-reach place and the food has to be eaten on the same day. There's no online ordering option either. The rice cakes were delicious, with small grains that made it disappear quickly. I'm sad it's gone so fast, but I really want to go back again!

The first time at Onuma Park, it was surprisingly large, or rather, too large. The scale is different indeed. Established in 1905, Numano-ya Motomoto was recommended to try their original product↓▼Original Onuma Dango (Koore) for 430 yen. It is said to sell out quickly at times. The combinations include sweet bean paste and soy sauce sesame. The dango is small and shaped like a cocoon. The sweet bean paste is smooth - I usually prefer chunky bean paste, but this was delicious. The soy sauce is also traditional. This must have been a huge hit back in the days when sweet treats were rare. I don't know for sure, but it was a delicious meal.

I finally had the chance to visit Numanoie, a popular place in Sapporo that I've been wanting to go to for a while! The original Oonuma dango was surprisingly flat, I thought it would be taller. It always comes with soy sauce, but what should people who don't like mitarashi do? The anko was a bit miso-like, with a strange taste... The sesame had a lot of moisture, not rich and heavy but rather light and refreshing. The soy sauce was nostalgic, with a sweet and salty taste. The dango was soft and chewy, bite-sized so you can eat it quickly. The overall sweetness was modest, which might be why it's so popular. I'm glad I got to try it this time! Thank you, Wu-ta!

I have been exploring various mochi-based Japanese sweet shops around Japan. Since I prefer gluten-free sweets, I tend to gravitate towards mochi-based desserts. I bought the mitarashi sesame bean paste at a shop and it was my favorite. However, there must be more delicious mitarashi shops out there. I will only post my top 5 favorite shops on Instagram. I only post 5-star rated shops on Instagram. Only the shops that I truly love, want to revisit, and share with friends will receive 5 stars. Follow my Instagram account: taiwan_natural_you

In June 2023, during a 3-night, 4-day trip to the southern part of Hokkaido via the Hokkaido Shinkansen, I tried a famous dango skewer establishment that has been around since 1905. Instead of the usual dango skewers, this place offered bite-sized dango packed tightly in a box. The dango is said to represent the two lakes, Onuma and Konuma, with the non-skewered dango symbolizing floating islands on the lake surface. There are two flavors available: "red bean paste and soy sauce" and "sesame and soy sauce," both priced at 430 yen each. Despite the same-day expiration date, I couldn't resist and ended up buying both. After arriving at my accommodation, I decided to have a taste before dinner. The bite-sized dango was soft, with just the right amount of sweetness from the sesame and red bean paste, complemented by the slightly salty soy sauce. I couldn't stop eating them and ended up finishing all of them before dinner. They were incredibly delicious. "Sesame and soy sauce" dango box, 210g. Ingredients: Japanese rice, sugar, sesame, soy sauce, glutinous rice, starch, agar, processed starch, enzymes, alcohol. Nutritional information per 100g: 209kcal, 3.2g protein, 2.3g fat, 43.9g carbohydrates, 0.6g salt equivalent. "Red bean paste and soy sauce" dango box, 210g. Ingredients: Japanese rice, sugar, red bean paste, soy sauce, glutinous rice, starch, corn syrup, processed starch, enzymes, alcohol. Nutritional information per 100g: 200kcal, 3.5g protein, 0.4g fat, 45.6g carbohydrates, 0.5g salt equivalent.

The Oonuma Dango represents Oonuma Lake and Koonuma Lake, with small white rice cakes symbolizing the 126 islands floating on the lakes. Unlike skewered dango, these dango have small white rice cakes filled with sweet bean paste. You can choose between soy sauce and sesame or soy sauce and sweet bean paste. The small size costs 430 yen and the large size costs 710 yen. My husband chose sweet bean paste, but the sesame paste was much more flavorful and delicious. They are best eaten fresh on the same day, and we were surprised by the generous portion size. It was very affordable, so it would make a good souvenir if it had a longer shelf life.

If you stop by this area, there's a shop I recommend visiting. I have a sweet tooth and I can't resist it. The dumplings here are not as sweet as mitarashi dango. It may be a bit lacking for people from Kansai. But I liked the red bean paste. It's like the red bean paste in Akafuku mochi. The portion size might be a bit much for one person, but it was just right for me.

On the final day of my trip to Hakodate, I visited Onuma Quasi-National Park, which is about a 30-minute ride on the Limited Express Hokuto from Hakodate. In front of the station, there is a traditional dumpling shop called "Numa no Ie," established in 1905. The reason they don't put the dumplings on a stick is because they resemble the floating islands on the lake. The dumplings, filled with soy sauce and sweet red bean paste, have a gentle and refined sweetness.

When you arrive at Onuma Koen Station, you'll see a line of customers waiting at "Numa no Ie" here. It may look like a long line, but customers leave quickly after buying, so your turn will come soon. I can't eat anko, so I chose the small Onuma Dango (soy sauce and sesame). I visited after 12 o'clock, and the large Onuma Dango was sold out! But the small one is quite filling, so if you don't want to eat too much here, the small one is good. The dango has a fragrant sesame flavor, with just the right amount of sweetness and saltiness from the soy sauce, reminiscent of mitarashi dango. The mochi is small and easy to eat, very smooth with a good texture that is not sticky to the teeth. When you stop by Onuma Park, definitely try it out!

After having lunch at the restaurant "THE DANSHAKU LOUNGE" located at the Michi-no-Eki Nanairo Nanairo, we took a stroll at the Onuma Park to aid digestion. For our 3 o'clock snack, we bought the "Original Onuma Dango" at the "Numa no Ie" shop and enjoyed it at the table behind the shop. "Numa no Ie" has a history dating back to 1885, boasting over 108 years of tradition. While they are called dango, they are not skewered, representing the Onuma and Konuma lakes. They offer two types: "soy sauce and sweet red bean paste" and "soy sauce and sesame," with both large and small sizes available. We bought the small size of the soy sauce and sesame dango at the end of the line. The soy sauce dango had a sweet and savory taste similar to "mitarashi dango," while the sesame dango had a mild flavor with less sesame aroma than expected. The dango itself had a moderate elasticity and a somewhat bland taste. The "wasabi age" we bought for some excitement had a hint of wasabi flavor but lacked the intense spiciness we were looking for, offering a gentler taste.
