On a certain holiday, I decided to have lunch at a department store and stopped by a pickles shop that I had never visited before. I found a slightly discounted item on the display shelf, a bag of mini cucumbers for 600 yen. It was the most popular item, and the bag contained about 5 small and cute cucumbers that were slightly salty and sweet when I took a bite. It seemed like a crowd-pleaser and a good deal compared to the price per gram. I also bought a bag of pickled herring for 600 yen, which had a slight tangy taste and a sense of aging, with cabbage, radish, thinly sliced carrots, and firm herring to chew on. It had a slightly higher herring ratio compared to other stores. Despite the slightly discounted prices, pickles sure are expensive. Thank you for the meal.

Strolling around Daimaru underground, I always notice the pickled vegetable shop at the corner. On a particular day, I came across some pickled yams. I love pickled vegetables, so I decided to buy them. The deal was if you buy three pickled vegetables, it costs 1000 yen (I think). I chose yams, cucumbers, and Chinese cabbage as the other two. I also picked up some Sanmashizuke, which I had previously enjoyed at a izakaya with cream cheese. I haven't made it yet, but I enjoyed it at home with some drinks. It was delicious! The yams were crunchy and well-soaked in soy sauce, just as I had imagined. These pickled vegetables are always tasty. Since then, I have been making and eating plenty of yam pickles at home. Yams are good for strengthening the body. Cheers!

Due to a virus causing my computer to malfunction, the migration process to a new desktop computer has been completed. This is my first time using Windows 10 and due to health reasons, the migration took longer than expected. I am now back to liking and commenting. Thank you for your understanding. [January 2019] This is my second review, so I will keep it brief. Yamazen Daimaru Sapporo store is a specialty store for pickles in the basement food section. I bought three types of pickles that come in a bag: - Pickled Okra: The texture of the okra is nice, with a pleasant yuzu flavor. Price: 600 yen per bag, 1800 yen for 3 bags (tax included). The pickles from Daimaru are always delicious and reliable. The amount in each bag is modest, so the 1800 yen disappears quickly. (laughs) They used to offer a slight discount when you bought 3 bags of 600 yen pickles, but I noticed that service is no longer available. Perhaps due to the rising prices of ingredients. As an ordinary person, it has become difficult for me to afford these pickles for daily use. However, I may still end up buying them again next time. (laughs) Thank you for the delicious meal.

End-of-year shopping series, Depachika pickles shop edition I can't deny the feeling of overstocking on end-of-year groceries, but I still end up buying them (laughs). At the Daimaru underground food market, there's a pickle shop called "Sanzo" that I think I've shopped at a few times before (I think I received a turnip pickle...). This time, I received "eggplant" and "cucumber" in a bag without looking at the price, but it was 600 yen each (tax included), so the cost performance is not great. When I got home and tried them, the taste of the "eggplant" was slightly salty, but it might be good to squeeze it tightly before eating. The taste balance is good and it's very delicious. Since it doesn't last long, I recommend buying small amounts at a time.

In October 2013, Yamazen, a pickle shop based in Asahikawa, was visited while at Daimaru. This shop is located on the basement floor of Daimaru Sapporo, directly connected to JR Sapporo Station in Chuo Ward, Sapporo City. For the exact location of the shop, please check on Tabelog. The shop offers free samples for tasting. After sampling, three items were purchased, each 100g: 1. Hotaru Eggplant - a small-sized eggplant pickled in a sour flavor, priced at 315 yen. 2. Yuzu Turnip - sliced turnips with a subtle yuzu flavor, light and delicious, priced at 315 yen. 3. 10 Kinds of Vegetables - a recommended mix of spicy shimeji mushrooms, carrots, eringi mushrooms, burdock, onions, shishito peppers, eggplant, etc., priced at 315 yen. The Yuzu Turnip and 10 Kinds of Vegetables tasted just as good as the samples, but the Hotaru Eggplant was disappointing as the purchased product was much more sour than the sample. The receipt showed the price per 100g for all items, but it was difficult to understand the breakdown as each item was not individually labeled with the name, weight, and price. It would be better if they could provide a more detailed breakdown of the items purchased. Perhaps next time, I'll bring my own scale (laughs). Thank you for the meal.

When you come to Daimaru Sapporo store, the first thing you would probably buy is this pickled vegetable. I'm not a fan of pickles, but for some reason, I always end up buying them here. This time, I got firefly eggplant, celery, and red turnip-like pickles (I forgot the name). The most popular one is the firefly eggplant. The small size and refreshing taste make it very easy to eat. The staff always recommend it and it's even labeled as a recommended product. Celery is just celery even when pickled. I feel like eating it with mayonnaise, but I remind myself it's pickled and resist the temptation. The red turnip-like pickles also seem to be quite popular. Sometimes they can be a bit spicy, depending on the season or climate. They are small and easy to eat, which is probably why they are popular. Personally, I also like pickled long yam. It has a crunchy texture and a light taste. But then again, pickles are supposed to be light, right? (laughs) Okra is also recommended. It's just pickled okra, but when I first tried it, I was amazed by this unique way of eating okra. There are many other pickles to try, so I recommend giving them a taste. Enjoy your meal!

I was offered a sample to try, and being a timid person, I couldn't refuse and ended up eating it. I don't remember the taste of the sample, but I ended up buying pickled rapeseed greens and red turnip pickles. When I opened the bag at home, I was surprised. It wasn't from the same place as last time! There were actually two pickle shops! I had no idea. No wonder the color and shape looked different from before. But when I tried them, they were still delicious in their own way. The pickled rapeseed greens were sweet and sticky, almost like pickled plums. The sweet and sour taste of the red turnip pickles was really good. But pickles are expensive, aren't they? They said it was "500 yen," so I thought it was 500 yen for two, but it was actually 500 yen for one! 1000 yen for two! (laughs) Well, I guess that's how it is. Come to think of it, the previous pickles might have been even more expensive. If you're looking for both affordability and peace of mind, making your own pickles is the way to go. It may be convenient for those who find making their own pickles troublesome.

Located in the gourmet area in the basement of Daimaru Department Store Sapporo, "Yamazen" has been selling pickles for many years. The colorful and diverse pickles stimulate your appetite, and you may find yourself buying them even if you didn't plan to. This time, I purchased the most popular "mini cucumbers" as a souvenir for my family. The taste was as expected, not disappointing at all. Although the price of 600 yen for a single serving size may seem a bit high, the deliciousness that makes you a repeat customer is what makes this store amazing.
