I had dinner at Menjiro. It was ramen for dinner, and surprisingly, it was quite crowded. The interior is beautiful, relatively new, and clean. I had been avoiding Menjiro because of its simple name, but when I looked at the menu, I was surprised to see that it was quite substantial. My recommendation is the miso ramen. I chose a combination of white and red miso. The soup is a double soup made with chicken bones, pork bones, and aromatic vegetables. It was unexpectedly well thought out. The noodles are medium-thick curly noodles from Sapporo. The soup was easy to drink and I finished it all. They should consider changing the name. The soup at this restaurant has more character and is more delicious than the name "Menjiro" suggests. Thank you for the meal.

This used to be a popular restaurant, but it seems to have been overtaken by the current trends. However, I was in the mood for white miso that day, so I decided to go to the same restaurant. When I looked at the menu, I realized that they had run out of white miso. I reluctantly ordered the mixed miso instead. I sat at the counter, but the two part-time middle-aged ladies kept chatting right in front of the customers. It was quite uncomfortable, so I quickly finished my meal and left.

On the weekend, my spouse and I visited the restaurant. It was past 12 o'clock, so the restaurant was full. Luckily, we were able to sit down smoothly as people left. The mixed miso ramen was ¥720 and the rice set was ¥250. The mixed miso ramen had a strong garlic flavor and punch, more like "garlic miso" in taste... I wish it had a bit more richness. It might be a bit too strong for lunch on weekdays. The rice set included 3 dumplings, rice, and kimchi dumplings were just average. Personally, I would prefer a different side dish instead of kimchi. Despite that, the restaurant was full, giving off a vibe of a long-standing ramen place in Hakodate.

I went to try the seasonal limited oyster ramen! The light salt broth with plump oysters! This restaurant is known for its miso ramen in Hakodate, but the oyster ramen is a classic salt flavor. I added some spicy mustard greens on top, which was a perfect match! Thank you for the meal!

I visited the shop next to Goryokaku Junior High School, which is famous for its miso ramen and special squid dumplings, called Ramen Senka Menjiro. When it comes to ramen shops, I always had the image of a stubborn old man in the kitchen, but here, there is a lady in the kitchen. The recommended menu here is the miso ramen, made with a blend of pork bone, chicken broth, and aromatic vegetables in the soup, with a combination of white miso, red miso, and aged hatcho miso. This time, I ordered the spicy miso ramen (800 yen). It came with medium thick curly noodles and tender char siu. I was very satisfied.

I ordered the white miso ramen on my first visit. I heard they are famous for their miso ramen, but it wasn't to my liking. It was more like drinking miso soup, very watery ramen.

I love the ramen with the choice of traditional red miso or white miso that has not changed since the old days! The rich and flavorful soup that clings to the noodles is my favorite! It's always crowded during lunchtime, but I don't mind waiting because I really want to eat this ramen. Whenever I visit that place, I will definitely go there again!

I had lunch at Menjiro Honten in June 2016. I had tried their "Awase Miso" at their store in Ishikawa-cho before and found it surprisingly delicious, so I decided to visit their main store this time. In a previous review of the Ishikawa store, I had mentioned that I wanted to try the spicy miso next time, so that's what I ordered this time. The interior of the restaurant has a counter with 6 seats and 5 tables which can be divided into two-person tables. The food arrived in less than 10 minutes. The visual presentation of the dish was a bit mysterious, with the spicy miso spread on a ladle. I tried the soup directly from the bowl first, which had a mild and slightly unsatisfying miso flavor with a hint of garlic. The soup base seemed to have more chicken than pork. I ended up having to dissolve all the spicy miso in the soup to make it drinkable. The spiciness was not too strong, and the saltiness improved after mixing in the miso. I think it would be better to have ginger or liver paste on top of the chashu, like in some other restaurants. The noodles were medium-thick curly Sapporo style but cooked soft like Hakodate style. The chashu was tender and cold, which was a bit disappointing. The bean sprouts were overcooked and too soft. Overall, I had enjoyed Menjiro at a different store, but this time the spicy miso didn't quite suit my taste. Thank you for the meal! I'll have to think about whether I'll visit again next time.

Before going to play tennis at night, I wanted to eat something warm because it would be cold. While looking at a free paper in Hakodate, I discovered something! I have only been there once, but I have completely fallen in love with the shrimp ramen at Ichigen in Sapporo. Seeing recent news about shrimp, thoughts of Ichigen crossed my mind, so I was excited when I saw a photo of it in the free paper. I knew it's best not to have high expectations, but I remember that the miso ramen at Ramen Jiro I had a while back was delicious, so I was still looking forward to it. Maybe because it was early, there were no customers. In addition to the shrimp ramen, I ordered a Char-mayo (¥200) rice ball. The Char-mayo arrived first, in just over 5 minutes. It was smaller than I expected. Three rice balls that could be eaten in two bites, no, one bite. About 2 minutes later, the ramen arrived. The shrimp aroma was not as strong as I had expected. First, the soup. The shrimp aroma was not that strong after all. And compared to Ichigen, it lacked a certain unity. It was delicious, but I couldn't help but compare it to Ichigen. The rice balls were small and the mayo was a bit too strong, making me doubt if it was tuna but still thinking it might be tuna while eating it. I thought maybe the miso ramen would be better if I come here again. Visited on October 28, 2013.

I couldn't forget the taste of the noodles I had here before, so I decided to visit this restaurant again. This is my second time here. This time, I tried the "tonkotsu shoyu" ramen. The noodles here are just delicious. They are chewy, smooth, and have a satisfying texture. The chashu pork is slightly firm but seasoned just right, without any unpleasant smell. The soup has a light scattering of pork fat, not too rich, but brings out the umami flavor. It pairs perfectly with the noodles. The menu says the noodles are aged for five days, which undoubtedly contributes to their deliciousness. Overall, this is a restaurant that I definitely want to include in my list of favorite places to eat.

LEGACY

It was located near my workplace and I had been curious about it for a while. I couldn't decide where to have lunch, so I decided to go there. There are also ramen shops like Rokka nearby. It seemed quite busy during lunchtime with customers coming in. I ordered the Assari Miso Ramen for 700 yen. Even though I live in Hakodate, it's not my hometown, so I still haven't tried the Shio (salt) flavor. I had to wait about 7 minutes for my order. The toppings included bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, and other typical ingredients. The soup is said to be rich, but I think it could have been a bit richer for those who like it thick. However, it was just right, not too heavy on the stomach. The chashu had a nice texture and flavor. I think it would be better if the price was around 600 yen.

Ika Mayo Don (Squid and Mayonnaise Rice Bowl) at Menjiro in Hakodate is a must-try along with their simple salt ramen. The Ika Mayo Don is an original dish limited to 10 servings per day, so it's best to go early in the day to try it. Menjiro is located at 5-1901 Tanomachi, Hakodate, Hokkaido. They are open from 11:00 to 22:00 with irregular holidays.

I went to Men Jiro, which I had found on Tabelog and was interested in. It is located right near Goryo Junior High School. There is a parking lot with space for over 10 cars next to the store. Inside the store, there are 8 counter seats, 2 tables for 4 people, and 4 tables for 2 people. I went there just before lunch on a weekday, and there were a few customers. By lunchtime, about 10 customers had come in. I ordered the most popular dish, the Assari Miso Ramen. The soup is made from chicken and pork bones, and the miso is a blend of miso, but it was a bit light. It would have been better if the flavor was a bit milder. The toppings included chashu, menma, bean sprouts, and green onions. The chashu was pork belly chashu, which was tender and delicious. The noodles were medium-thick curly noodles with a high water content. I was a bit disappointed with the noodles as well. I didn't think I had high expectations, but it was a bit disappointing. By the way, the Assari Miso Ramen cost 700 yen.
