■ Beer Garden
The other day, I visited Toyohirakan as mentioned in the article (I went to the nostalgic record appreciation event at Toyohirakan (It was quite good)), but the true purpose of that day was the beer garden. In the summer, beer gardens are held in various places, but for over a decade since coming to Sapporo, I don't have a clear memory of going to one. This summer is unusually hot, and being at home is boring, so I decided to finally give it a try this year.
■ Otaru Beer Beer Garden
Beer gardens are held in various places. Initially, I was thinking of going to the one held at Odori Park, but it seems that they also have a Otaru Beer beer garden at Sousei River Park (http://otarubeer.com/jp/archives/7394). They serve authentic German beer, and the menu seems unique and interesting, so I decided to start by going there.
■ System
I walked from Nakajima Park, sweating, and finally arrived! Now, how do you order food and beer? It seems that you first need to purchase tickets. After that, you can order food from the attendant once you are seated, and for beer, you can either order it along with the food or directly at the shop next to the ticket counter. The menu looks like this. Hmm, looks delicious!
■ Food and Drinks
First, I ordered a Radler, which is beer mixed with lemonade. After that, I looked for a seat. The weather was unusually good that day, meaning it was hot. The humidity wasn't high, so it wasn't too bad when in the shade, but it was still hot. I managed to secure a seat by the river to seek some coolness. But, it was still hot. Although there was a tent, so it wasn't directly under the sun, the edges were still hot. I ended up moving towards the center of the tent. Now, for food, I ordered the roast chicken plate. I wanted to try a variety of things. It was quite delicious. The low alcohol content was also nice. Since it was a beer garden, I wanted to try a few different beers. Next, I tried the Waldmeister. And I ordered some more food. Currywurst and Jamon Serrano. In the end, it looked like this.
■ Clean-up
There was a return slot next to the shop to return the beer mugs. Plates and such could be thrown in the trash bin in the same place. I had prepared a plastic bag (for trash) in my bag just in case, but I didn't need to use it.
■ Afterword
As always, I went alone. I'm not good with group activities due to my personality, and I get uneasy when with others, so I wanted to enjoy it slowly by myself. Well, I don't dislike drinking with others, but I'm not good at small talk, so it's hard to keep the conversation going or I feel bad for the other person... If you think I might get bored alone, well, recently there's the convenience of smartphones, so I enjoyed my beer while reading online novels. I was a bit skeptical at first, but it seemed to suit my personality, and I surprisingly had a good time. By the way, I chose to go during the day rather than at night because I anticipated fewer people. I had gone at night before, but it was too crowded and I felt overwhelmed and ended up not doing anything and going home. Taking that into consideration, I thought it would be better to go at a time when there were fewer people, almost at the same time as the event started. This attempt was successful, as there were quite good seats available and I had the leisure to understand the system slowly. Yeah, I enjoyed it more than I thought, so maybe next time I'll go to the beer garden at Odori Park?
