I also ordered the mixed tempura and tonkatsu set with a side of chilled tofu, which was not particularly delicious but not bad either, just a stable taste. I didn't know they offered unlimited rice and dashi soup for refills, which could be dangerous if this restaurant was nearby. Overall, I'm glad the total bill was 946 yen!

It was my first time riding a bike to Ebetsu's downtown area, about 30km away. Despite the challenging ride, I made it to Ebetsu downtown to have lunch. I ordered the Miso Katsu set meal with extra large portion of barley rice for 930 yen. The miso katsu here is quite mild compared to the authentic version. However, unlike the authentic one, I didn't get tired of it and enjoyed it until the end. A mystery is that the extra large portion was only about 50 yen more and you can get a refill. Should I have just ordered a regular portion and then gotten a refill? I wonder if there would have been no extra charge if I had chosen white rice instead?

Due to the timing of finishing work, I arrived at an odd hour, but there were still a fair number of customers. Feeling like having a bowl rather than a set meal, I decided to order the 'Katsu Don (¥690)'. It had been a while since I last visited, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that you could help yourself to hot tea and enjoy unlimited servings of pickled Chinese cabbage. The Chinese cabbage was so delicious that it felt like a waste to have it as a side dish! The Katsu Don was ready in less than 10 minutes! The sauce soaked the cutlet and rice thoroughly, resulting in a lack of crispiness in the cutlet and the rice having a porridge-like texture, but the thick meat and sweet, runny egg made it enjoyable for me. It was not tough to chew, and considering the price and portion size, it was quite tasty! Unlike set meals, you cannot have seconds of rice with a bowl, but being able to have a free large serving is a plus point, and Yayoiken's selling point is also its affordability. It is not an in-store restaurant but a separate building on the street, with convenient access to a shared parking lot. A unique feature is its opening time at 10:00, while many other "Yayoiken" restaurants in Hokkaido open at 11:00, possibly to align with the opening hours of other supermarkets in Frespo Megumino. This was my second visit to a Yayoiken restaurant, following the one in Chitose. The interior decor and atmosphere are similar, but the seating layout is quite different. The dish I had this time was the "katsu don" (pork cutlet rice bowl), which is one of the few bowl menu items in the restaurant mainly offering set meals. The portion size, seasoning, and meat quality were good, but it was too soupy, making the rice at the bottom mushy like porridge. This could be a cooking process issue or the default specification of the dish. Personally, I prefer a bit less soup. Despite using a meal ticket system, having a paper menu at the table allows for easy consideration of what to eat next time. It would be nice if they offered a greater variety of dishes, such as tempura, tempura rice bowl, noodles like soba or udon, as there are not many dining options in Frespo Megumino.

This restaurant chain has locations from Hokkaido to Okinawa, so many people are familiar with it. For a limited time, they are offering a "Chicken Tempura and Dumpling Soup Set Meal" for 860 yen. This dish is a specialty from Oita! People from Kyushu really love chicken tempura, as well as mackerel tempura. These may not be as familiar to those from Hokkaido. Chicken tempura with a little bit of mustard and ponzu sauce is healthy and delicious. The "dumplings" in the dumpling soup are like wide, thick noodles similar to Yamanashi's "hoto." When you try it, it's like eating "hoto in miso soup." It's so tasty! You can also add yuzu pepper if you like, but it's delicious enough without it, so I prefer it without. The chicken tempura and dumpling soup set meal is so delicious that I wish they would make it a regular menu item instead of just a limited-time offer.
