In July 2021, I visited a restaurant in Nyaku, Shakotan. Nyaku is known for two popular seafood bowl restaurants: "Urakou Honten" located next to the parking lot of Shakotan Cape, and "Unizenya Suginoya" located at the entrance of Nyaku Fishing Port, open only on weekends and holidays. However, "Oshokujidokoro Uroko" is a limited operation restaurant located within the inn "Urakou-so," which I believe should be registered as a separate entity from the inn for proper evaluation, but it is officially registered as one establishment, so there is nothing the reviewers can do about it.
"Oshokujidokoro Uroko" is only open during the sea urchin fishing season from mid-June to the end of August, and the owner, who is a sea urchin fisherman, only opens the restaurant on days when fresh sea urchin is available. The average number of operating days during the season is about 20 days per year, and it is necessary to check if the restaurant is open on the official website the night before or on the morning of the visit. Despite trying for several years, I have always been unlucky with the restaurant being closed on the days I visited Shakotan due to my work schedule. However, this time I was able to visit on an operating day for the first time.
The menu for the day included "Uni Don" (Sea Urchin Bowl), "Ikura Don" (Salmon Roe Bowl), and "Uni Ikura Nishoku Don" (Sea Urchin and Salmon Roe Two-Color Bowl). Personally, I prefer menus that allow me to enjoy more than just sea urchin, such as three-color bowls or seafood bowls, but at this restaurant, there is little point in choosing anything other than sea urchin. I opted for the "Uni Don," which came with a bowl of sea urchin, taro miso soup, a small dish of squid and cucumber vinegar, and pickles, all for 3,300 yen. The amount of sea urchin was generous, almost covering the rice completely, with about 120g of sea urchin used.
When I first tasted the sea urchin and rice without any condiments, the natural sweetness of the sea urchin spread throughout my mouth. Adding a little soy sauce enhanced the harmony of the soy sauce flavor and the deliciousness of the sea urchin. Finally, I mixed the remaining rice and sea urchin together and savored it. The restaurant's irregular operating days may be a barrier, but if you want to savor delicious sea urchin, this is definitely an option to consider. Additionally, there are opportunities for discounts through coupon services for posting images on social media on certain days, although I did not take advantage of it this time.
