The other day, I passed by a new restaurant called "ben.chan" on the corner of Kotoni Sakae Street, North 35th Street, West 10th Street, about a 10-minute walk from Asahikawa Station. The restaurant specializes in fish dishes, as indicated by the name. The operation seemed to be run by a couple, with a counter seating for 7 and two 4-person tables. I arrived after 2 pm and was greeted promptly by the staff, who asked if I wanted to sit at the counter. The place had a few customers, some of whom seemed to be related to the owners. One lady even asked if it was a fish market. I ordered the "Rare! Fried Horse Mackerel Plate @1,200 yen" for lunch, which was served in about 6 minutes. The fried horse mackerel was cut into 6 pieces and had a crispy texture. The set included rice, salad, miso soup, side dish, and pickles, with a complimentary cold green tea as part of the opening celebration. The salad was fresh and dressed with a flavorful Italian dressing. The side dish featured tuna, salmon, and white fish with a jelly topping, showing promising freshness for other seafood dishes. The miso soup was light and had a good dashi flavor, although slightly salty for my taste. The pickled cucumber was tasty and seemed homemade. The rice was cooked just right and complemented the dish well. Overall, the meal was delicious, and I would like to try their seafood dishes in the future. The lunch menu had a variety of options, with the cheapest being the "Chicken Nanban @1,000 yen." I felt that having a few more options under 1,000 yen would be appreciated in the current economic climate. I might return to try their dinner menu as well.
