Mamou
On February 25, 2020, four of us visited this restaurant for the first time. It is located close to my hometown in Hakodate, only 2km away, but it feels both near and far as I used to work part-time delivering newspapers at a nearby store 37 years ago. The restaurant has been in business for 44 years, even when I was working nearby. We parked our car in the vacant lot next to the residential area and made a reservation by phone in advance, as it is necessary. The menu offers a set meal of 10 pieces of nigiri sushi for 1800 yen, available for both lunch and dinner. The restaurant is run by the master chef and his wife, with only five counter seats available. We were served hot tea first, followed by ginger, tuna, scallop, salmon, flounder, squid, king crab, botan shrimp, hokkigai, pickled mackerel, and ikura gunkan-maki. The sushi rice is packed just right, so it's recommended to eat with your hands. The quality of the ingredients is excellent, especially the scallop with a satisfying texture and the king crab with thick, delicious meat. While you may not engage in modern sushi shop talk, the chef's careful selection of ingredients and craftsmanship are evident. We ended the meal with a cup of hot sake and thanked the chef. This is a great place to enjoy traditional Edo-style sushi with family or friends in a cozy, hidden gem setting.
