The annual autumn field trip from October 19th (Day 1) to October 20th (Day 2) is a 2-night, 3-day food tour in Sapporo and Hakodate. Departing from Kansai Airport at 3:30 pm on a JAL flight, we landed at New Chitose Airport 1 hour and 50 minutes later. We took the JR Rapid Airport train and arrived at Sapporo Station, which was already dark, at 6:10 pm. We walked a few minutes west from Sapporo Station North Exit to "Sandaime Tsukimisou Sapporo Station North Exit" and had "Miso Ramen" to fully enjoy the original taste of Sapporo Ramen. We then walked 1km east to our accommodation for the night, "Richmond Hotel Sapporo Station Front," arriving at 7 pm. The plan we booked through Rakuten was a Premier Single Smoking Room with breakfast for 15,700 yen (including tax and service charge). Although I quit smoking 10 years ago and preferred a non-smoking room, it was fully booked at the time of reservation, so I had to settle for a smoking room. However, when I asked during check-in, I was informed that a non-smoking room had become available on the 3rd floor of the 14-story building, so I requested to switch rooms. Unfortunately, the view from the room only showed the building across and the hotel's air conditioning equipment. Since I was only there to sleep, it was okay (sweat). The room had a semi-double bed, a unit bath with toilet, a TV, and a refrigerator, resembling a business hotel. As dinner was not included in the plan, I took a shower, changed into warm clothes, took the subway two stops to "Susukino," and visited the Hokkaido lamb specialty store "Itadakimasu." I drank beer while devouring "Genghis Khan" for two servings. After wandering around a bit, I returned to the hotel. Since I hadn't had rice since morning, I felt unsatisfied and went to the izakaya "Hanabi" on the 1st floor of the hotel. I had "Pacific Saury Sashimi" while sipping on "Shiso Shochu," and finished with "Salmon Chazuke" before returning to my room. Tomorrow, we will take the JR to New Chitose and head to Hakodate on an ANA flight, so it's time to go to bed early. The next day, I woke up before 7 am and headed to the breakfast venue "Hanabi" on the 1st floor of the hotel. I had visited here late last night and was guided to a table in the back. The breakfast menu was a fixed price of 1,200 yen, including a drink bar and salad bar. I chose the most Hokkaido-like option, "Hokkaido Zangi Soup Curry," and enjoyed Zangi and soup curry for breakfast! The breakfast cost-performance was excellent, despite the slightly high room rate. I poured milk into a glass, put potato salad and vegetables in a small bowl, and even had fruit yogurt for dessert. As soon as I returned to my seat, the "Hokkaido Zangi Soup Curry" arrived. The four pieces of "Zangi" served with rice were well-seasoned fried chicken originating from Kushiro, Hokkaido. I ate them as a side dish with rice, without dipping them into the soup curry. The crispy and well-seasoned Zangi made the rice go down smoothly. The "Soup Curry" was spicy with a hint of spice, and contained large chunks of eggplant, carrots, and bell peppers, as well as half of a boiled egg. It wasn't luxurious, but it was just right for the morning. I put rice on a spoon, dipped it in the soup curry, and finished by pouring all the remaining soup over the rice to make curry porridge. I was full, but I wondered if I could continue eating in Hakodate. There was a coffee machine at the exit of the restaurant with a sign saying "Please take it with you," so I poured hot coffee into a paper cup and took it back to my room. This service is great! It was another beautiful day, so I checked out of the hotel at 7:40 am, dragged my suitcase for a 5-minute walk to Sapporo Station, and took the Rapid Airport train to New Chitose Airport, which took less than 40 minutes. Bon appétit!
