We had a family meal together. I had some extra income so I decided to treat my family to a meal at a restaurant we've been curious about but never had the chance to visit before. The kids were very interested and kept asking in English, "Is this Asian? Indian?" The younger child had a Kids Set Butter Chicken, the older child had Cheese Naan with Keema Mayo, my wife had Assorted Chicken Curry, and I had Cheese Naan with Dal Bhog. Unusually for a Nepalese-style restaurant, they serve the soup curry in a hot pot, bubbling hot. The soup is unique, with a thin consistency that focuses on umami. The simple spices complement the broth, but even for someone with a low tolerance for spiciness like me, I found the spiciness lacking a bit, so perhaps extra spicy would be better for balance. The dish is filled with a variety of ingredients: chicken, egg, bell pepper, eggplant, broccoli, cauliflower, okra, asparagus, green beans, lotus root, shimeji mushrooms, carrots, and pumpkin. All this for 1,050 yen is great value. The well-cooked rice is also satisfying, with about 300g leaving you feeling very full. While the curry itself has a different finish and direction, in terms of the dashi broth, it somewhat resembles the popular Otaru restaurant "Curry Koya" with its oden-style dashi.

However, when I heard that "Tandoori Restaurant Asa," which has its main store in Nagano Town and two branches in Chitose City, was opening a new branch in Tomakomai, I felt like trying it again after a long time. The location is in Tomakomai, across from the city hospital, in a building that used to be Nakajima Pharmacy a few years ago. The building originally had a drive-thru, which has been repurposed for the curry restaurant, now with a drive-thru option. I visited on a weekday afternoon and ordered the "Cheese Naan Set" from the menu. This set allows you to choose your favorite curry, which comes with cheese naan and salad. I chose the "Keema Curry." Looking at the menu, the basic "Asa Set" comes with plain naan, but in this set, you get cheese naan instead. However, you can have unlimited refills of plain naan, so I planned to try the plain naan after having the cheese naan. But this was a big mistake because the large and cheesy cheese naan was already filling enough, and I couldn't even think of having more naan (laughs). Initially, I planned to have a refill, so I started with the cheese naan, but when I gave up on the refill, I hurriedly started eating the curry, which made the pacing a bit off. But you know, when you have the cheese naan set, you can easily get full just with the naan, so it's a bit tricky to find the right timing to eat the curry. The large naan bread was surprising, but lately, most restaurants offer oversized naan bread with free refills. The naan bread had a sweet dough and was delicious.
