The other day, I discovered "Reading Room Poirot" on Instagram, and on November 2, they opened their doors. Three days later, after finishing work, I rushed over around 4 PM. Just a minute's walk from Toho Line Toyohira Park Station Exit 1, heading north on a narrow alley. The exterior of the shop looks like an ordinary house, and without the signboard with the name of the shop, you wouldn't know it's a store. Upon entering, you take off your shoes and go upstairs. It's not exactly an old folk house, but it's probably over 50 years old, and it has been nicely decorated with furniture and furnishings without changing the partitions. Despite the high temperature for this time of year, the kerosene stove was lit, keeping the room warm and humid. A single woman in her 30s or 40s was running the place. "There are seats on the first and second floors, so choose where you like," she said. I chose a single sofa with an ottoman in the back corner on the first floor. It's a "no talking" reading cafe, so the seats are for individuals facing the counter or the wall. On the side table, there are condiments, toothpicks, menus, napkins, lights, and more. After carefully looking at the menu, I ordered "homemade cookies @100" and "black tea @400." The tea was brewed slowly and brought to me in about 10 minutes. In the meantime, I picked up a book from the bookshelf and started reading. The "homemade cookies" come in a set of two at this price, not too sweet, not too hard, with a hint of buttery flavor, perfect for tea time. The "black tea" was to my liking in terms of aroma, strength, and temperature, making it easy to drink with a mild astringency. After leisurely reading and browsing on my phone, almost two hours had passed. They are open until 9 PM on weekdays, but on Friday nights, they are open until 11 PM. How about spending a quiet autumn evening in such a place? It's a hidden gem where you can easily stop by even in cold weather with the subway nearby. Personally, I would be delighted if they could offer a slightly fancy bottle of craft beer. The seats at the back of the first floor are a bit dark for reading (due to my presbyopia). I would also appreciate it if they had Wi-Fi and power outlets (sorry for being selfish). I would love to visit again at my leisure. Thank you for the wonderful experience.
