A new canelé specialty store has opened in Otaru! I have been eagerly waiting for this as I love canelés. The store is located straight ahead from the exit of Nagasakiya's Mukuge-san. While most places only offer one type of canelé, this specialty store allows you to choose from 8 different flavors. The classic flavors include Dark Rum (rum and vanilla), Grenoble (I forgot the explanation, sorry), Cinnamon Honey (rich cinnamon honey), and Cocoa Glue (roasted cocoa flavor). The store also offers 4 original flavors: Seigle (rye, raisin, blueberry), Fraises au Lait (strawberry milk), Fromage (cream cheese & Edam cheese), and Amandine (almond and orange scent). You can purchase a box of 4 (650 yen) or 8 (1300 yen) canelés, with the freedom to choose your flavors. I bought a box of 4 with Cinnamon Honey, Cocoa Glue, Fraises au Lait, and Amandine. The canelés are the smallest I've had, with a slightly sticky and moist texture. They are elegantly presented and delicious. Personally, I think the outer layer could be a bit crispier, but they are still very tasty. The flavor differences might not be too noticeable unless you pay close attention. With Otaru's love for sweets, I hope these small bite-sized canelés become a local specialty. Thank you for the meal!

In August 2023, I visited the first canelé specialty store in Otaru, called "Otaru Canelé Kura," located along the quiet street behind Nagasakiya. I heard that the canelé artisan is from Kansai, but the owner seems to be from Otaru. They offer a variety of canelés in the showcase, with 8 types available. I decided to order the 8-piece set for 1,300 yen. You can choose the flavors, but since it was my first time, I got one of each. I've never had canelé before, but they are surprisingly small, about the size of an ice cream "Pino." The texture is soft and moist, with a refined sweetness that is quite delicious. I think this would be popular among young adult women and leisurely ladies in Otaru. Overall, I hope that this canelé specialty store in Otaru will be loved for a long time.
